We brought our son to Costa Rica as a pre-high school graduation gift. It was a short stay but we wanted a comfortable home base, and the Residence Inn by Marriott San Jose Escazu hit the mark! Prior to arrival, I sent an email requesting a shuttle pickup. Melisa responding promptly that we were all set, and included instructions on how to locate our driver. Immediately upon leaving the airport Roland (sp?) was outside with a sign that had our names on it. He was very friendly, and gave us great information on the way to the airport. The email quoted $38 and Roland quoted $40 - not a big deal. We paid the $40 USD for 4 people (our family of 3 plus my BFF who was staying in her own room) and tipped him $10USD. Miguel was at the desk when we arrived (and I think every time we passed day or night - lol) and promptly checked us in. It was well before the 3pm check-in but he indicated that our room was ready. We are Gold Elite members and asked about an upgrade. Miguel informed us that it was only available for 2 nights but we could check back to see if anything change. On the next day, we checked and he said we were good for the entire time. We checked into a well appointed 2 bedroom suite. The rooms are a little small but if you have ever traveled to Europe you won't be shocked. The living room area was a good size plus there was a table with 2 chairs and the open kitchen which we loved. There was a weird smell in one of the bathrooms but we just assumed it was the water. The toilet seat in our bathroom was broken, we told Miguel as we headed out for a late lunch and it was replaced before we returned. The pool area isn't very big but generally wasn't crowded. Our last day, we spent time at the pool and there was a family of 4, a mom and day, a gentleman, plus me and my husband. That took up all the seats. The pool is a good size with plenty of towels available. The gym window looks out at the pool. There is a water cooler in the gym which I used to fill my reusable water bottle a couple times a day (hope that was okay). There is a Starbucks across the street, as well as some high end shopping. If you go toward the Mini Cooper store (come out the front door and turn left, cross the street, walk past the water feature and enter to the right), you will find a food court. It has a Subway, McDonalds, Sushi place, pizza, and several other options. We tried La Tatera which I had really good reviews and it was one of our best meals of the week - decent price and freshly prepared. As for food at the hotel, the breakfast is the best I have EVER had included at a Residence Inn. There is an omelet station managed by a lovely lady who always had a smile. There is a fresh fruit smoothie station that Paula (we absolutely adore her smile, personality and service) managed most mornings. The hot food options included Gallo Pinto, veggies, scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal (too watery for my preference), charcuterie (cheese and meats), fresh squeezed orange juice, amazingly sweet pineapple, watermelon and other fresh fruits, a waffle station plus they brought out pancakes. I'm sure I've forgotten something because there really was something for everyone. We ate dinner at the hotel one night. We had been out for a tour and didn't feel like going to the food court. This meal was just okay. My husband had the marriott burger, I had the fried rice with chicken (rice was under cooked so it was hard/crunchy - I returned it and they took it off my bill without a problem), and my son had a sandwich. The fries were really good. The burger and sandwich were both okay. It was more expensive than eating at La Tatera, and not as good in our opinion. My husband and I spent one evening having drinks, along with chips and salsa/guac/cheese on the patio. Our bill ws $48 for 2 drinks each plus the snack. A little steep but typical for hotel drink prices. The bartender was very attentive and made great drinks. This was our first night so we did go to the Market above the Crate and Barrel the next day and bought cocktails for in room consumption. On our last full day, our son turned 18. He wanted to go to PF Changs which was across the street. Before that we stopped on the 6th floor for the Elite guest reception. They had hors d'oueveres and vodka fruit punch. The punch was quite tasty. But the best part was that the staff - including the general manager Ismael - offered to take us all out to celebrate my son's birthday! They were not joking - but my son can be a little shy so he opted to stick with his original plan. However, when we returned to the room they had left him a card signed by the staff, candy and balloons. The balloons made my son and husband happy as they took turns inhaling the helium and talking in weird voices. (doesn't take much to make them happy right) We really appreciate how special they made him feel, and they made us feel like family and not just hotel guests. Check out was very quick. There were taxis out front, so we grabbed a minivan to take us to the airport. Cost was $30USD. Although cheaper than the hotel arranged shuttle, I still recommend the shuttle for arrival. You have someone you can trust helping you to start your visit. We did several tours during our visit and our hotel location was good for pickup and drop off. Most tours require a bit of a drive (1.5 to 3 hours depending on location). We did not make it to the beach during this visit but Roland told us it would be about 2 hours away. He quoted us a price of $270 if he were to trasport us to the beach and wait for us. Seemed reasonable but we opted to visit downton SanJose on our last day. We took an Uber for $12 USD. It was quick and easy but we didn't realize that Uber is illegal in Costa Rica until the driver told us! Would we return to this hotel? ABSOLUTELY!!! And we hope to do so in the not to distant future.
We stayed for 5 nights family of 4. The hotel is spotless clean, the staff speak great English and are very welcoming and helpful. The free breakfast is excellent lots of hot and cold choices and a custom smoothie bar! Location is perfect to walk around in the safest location in San Jose! Just awesome!
Just came back from this beauty. From the time you walk in you will feel like family. All staff members are friendly and helpful. Visit Ronny and Karol at the bar for some creative drinks and great conversation.
I came here solo from the U. S. I had a great time! There are excellent excursions in the area, the hotel is beautiful, and the staff is friendly. They offer a good breakfast daily. They are within walking distance to lots of shops and restaurants nearby.
Once again we were not disappointed by this hotel. Staff as always was very helpful. Omelet bar at the always free hot breakfast ! Location was great for small shops and plenty of food choices. Clean and spacious rooms for our family.
Great customer service, I was having medical issues while staying at the hotel and support and assistant by Lester for me to get to the hospital was great and especially timely. I am very grateful for his help. Same with other personnel during next day, helping me and being interest on what I needed. Thanks a lot!
Once we found our way to the Residence Inn Marriott in Escazu from the Santamaria San Jose Airport. We found the hotel very nice. The lobby was in the middle of being renovated but the renovation did not hinder our stay there. The pool was empty when we arrived but in a few days the was full of water again. The problem was to find our way there from the Santamaria San Jose, Costa Rica Airport using googlemaps.com directed us a back way that was very difficult in finding our way. We got lost and a store employee on a motorcycle left work to take us back to the airport and then had us follow him to Escazu on a back way to lead us to the Residence Inn. He was very gracious in taking the time our of his day to insure that we arrived at our destination. It took us about 4 hours for a 45K trip. Breakfast was Great with Costa Rican food, Walking distance to shopping center near by and a fast food court.
When I come into San Jose for business.....about 3 times a year.....we always stay at the Residence Inn......the location is great.....especially for walking around at night time.....it's close to shopping and our business appointments too......the service is good and the rooms just the right size.....thank you so much and see you next trip! Very nice hotel located amidst a number of shops, including Starbucks. Not as close to the airport as I had hoped (we got in on a late flight). Breakfast in the hotel was very good and included in our stay. I'd highly recommend this hotel. We didn't get an opportunity to try out the pool, but the workout room was nice.
Incredible room with all type of amenities, dishes machine, little refrigerator, microwave, splendid bed king size, amazing bathroom, and very quiet place, near of San Jose. The parking lot is small. Food is very good, Hotel employees are very friendly, I don't have words to say how grateful I am for them.
