We checked into this hotel on a very rainy night. The person at the desk was efficient, but we walked into a very cavernous, not at all inviting lobby. There is no concierge here, and the person at reception had no restaurant to recommend other than the hotel restaurant, which is a bad sign. And then he told us that the dinner at the restaurant was a buffet. Another bad sign. We then went to our room, which had a beautiful view over Lake Rotorua, but also a bad leak from one of the windows. In addition, the toilet seat was broken and lying half off the toilet and the chair in the room had tears in the arms. They immediately gave us a two floor suite, which had a leak, albeit a smaller one so the noise did not disturb us, but equally frayed furniture and stains all over the carpet on the floor. Oh, and also ants crawling over the cabinet that housed the minibar. The leaks were obviously old ones so it is shocking that they would assign these rooms to a guest, unless all the rooms in the hotel leak. we checked out the next morning and the assistant manager was apologetic, but offereed no excuses, as there were none to offer. There are also about 10 parking spaces for buses next to the side entrance to the hotel, and that fact tells you all you need to know about the guests the hotel caters to.
This hotel although friendly on arrival was a bit disappointing. We were asked for a ten dollar a night to connect to wifi until we complained and said that was a rip off nowadays. It was then suggested if we joined a club it would be free and it was free to join! So we did and it worked ok. We did have free parking which was good. The room was a lake view room which was great with a good view of the lake. The room was a bit tired as was the bathroom but it was ok. There was a fridge where you could put your own drinks. Breakfast was rather disappointing. We arrived about 8.30 every morning and found it difficult to find a clean table. The tables were not being cleared away regularly. The food was poor. We didn't use the pool as it didn't appear to be very big. Although the hotel wasn't brilliant for breakfast it had good views and was central to the attractions we wanted to visit. Christine
The hotel is situated by the lake and it gives it some charm. Upon arrival, you can park the car in the hotel parking lot and go to check in, where there are very nice people, by the way. The lift only works after the hotel card is attached. The room itself looks good, but some parts of the device would need to be replaced. Especially the bed, ours had a "hole" so we did not sleep very well. The breakfast was on the ground floor of the restaurant, which was spacious, but it personally bothered me to get too cold temperature set on the air conditioning. Otherwise, I would say that for Novotel it's standard, a wide range of meals, live cooking, juices not machine-driven but bottled. The evening sitting in the bar was a pleasant surprise for me, the fireplace in the middle of the bar gives the place its own charm. The hotel also has its own swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna and fitness facilities. Overall I have very pleasant memories from this place and I recommend it as a place to relax.
We stayed at the Novotel for two nights and we were impressed by the facilities and service. Breakfast and dinner was a buffet, but I understand alacarte was also available. We had a mix up and din't get interconnecting rooms on the first night but staff were able to sort it out on the second night. The pool and spas make use of the geothermal springs and seem to drain each morning.
This is a large hotel, a short walk from the lake, located at the end of a mall full of restaurants and cafes. Ample free parking is available. The room was large, clean, comfortable and quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar has a large open fire making it a very pleasant place for a pre-dinner drink. I would definitely stay here again.
Novotel Rotorua Lakeside is in a good location, by the lake and opposite Eat Street, which provides numerous eating options. It is however the most expensive of the Rotorua hotel options and as a regular Rotorua visitor I tend to compare value. Whilst the room was clean and comfortable, the service was not customer friendly (you are quoted the rules with no flexibility), and there was no free wifi in the room unless you joined the Accor club, and no free room service delivery unless you joined the Accor club (I don't want to be on any more hotel email lists - Accor emails me already). The room's compendium is only available online & I had to have a technician visit the room twice to fix a bug (I much prefer a paper version anyway). Think I might explore another hotel option next time.
The staff were super - sorted out the best room for us and bub - treated my 14 mnth old boy like a star, giving him attention and toys and also brought out some surprise cake & song at breakfast for my wifes bday.
We stayed at this hotel 6 years ago but it has really gone downhill since then. The restaurant staff are very unprofessionaland answered basic queries with "I don't know". Staff need more training and I won't waste my money staying here ever again
We had booked a lake view room but the room offered had a view of trees with a hint of the lake behind. There were also several stains on the carpet so I asked for a different room. To their credit the reception staff did change our room, but the lake view was equally poor and it had just as many stains on the carpet. Alarmingly the toilet was horrendously stained and there was mould and rust around the ceiling and toilet fittings. The whole room needed a deep clean and in this day and age there is no excuse for stained carpets or sanitary ware. We didn't use any of the other facilities at the hotel as the spa was horrendously expensive and the pool very small. We ate out at nearby Eat Street which has plenty of choice. There was also a lovely cafe just across the road which served a variety of excellent breakfast options.
Loved our stay at the Novotel Rotorua. The customer service, in particular in the buffet restaurant - Taylah on table service, Cedric at the live cooking station, and Conner at the entrance/registration stand - was exceptional. Room and facilities were of a high standard. Only negative was the lounge bar had an open gas fire operating on a hot muggy day. I was looking forward to somewhere nice and cool to relax over a cold beer after quite a hot day expecting the lounge bar would fit the bill, but quickly reassessed and went elsewhere.
