Holiday Inn Express Monterey-Cannery Row

2.5 out of 5.0

Beautiful flower garden, friendly staff, excellent accommodations, short walk to Cannery Row and aquarium. Will definitely come back!

Hotel rooms were large and clean. Like the walk around in white socks and your feet stay clean kind of clean! And by large I mean huge. 2 double beds, 2 chairs a small table a full desk and swivel chair, a TV stand , night stand , floor lamp, Crib, and all our luggage fit with tons of roomo to do flips (if your into that) the bathroom had a full window (with blinds of course) and an additional swivel make up mirror, large counter top for make up, curling irons and whatever else. It was very impressive. Now lets talk food... the complimentary breakfast was so good (with hotel free breakfast standards in mind of course) I felt like I was stealing! It had protein...did you hear that PROTEIN and a couple different options of protein at that. Then there was the wine and cheese reception in the evening. Let's just say they won my devotion on that informal gem. The hotel was in easy walking distance to cannery row. My 2 yr old and 5 year old walked with me and I didnt need to carry them once. Thats a great fast walk! Very close to a Starbucks and a cute ice cream shop for a late night treat. My only advice would be if you have trouble with stairs or are bringing heavy suitcases make sure to ask for a room that accommodates that. I would say a good half of the rooms require a small flight of stairs to be climbed even after you use the elevator. Oh yeah and ps they have complementary underground parking...no loading the car in the rain or beating sun!

comfortable room, nice hotel for the price, good location, lobby could use an update

I have nothing negative to say. Holiday Inn express is always a safe bet. The staff in Monterey were fantastic. VERY FRIENDLY. I love Monterey and will be staying at the HIE again.

Took my granddaughter to Monterey to see the sites

We had a great time at this hotel. The staff were friendly and courteous. We enjoyed the full breakfast and location.

We spent three nights here. It was wonderful to have all the shops & restaurants so close. The hiking/bike trail was just steps from our door. Everything in Cannery Row was an easy walk, including the Aquarium. It was great to just leave our car in the underground hotel parking lot. Fisherman's Wharf is a much longer walk. A happy surprise (for me, not the hubs) was the very large Cannery Row Antiques Mall right next door. The purpose of our trip was to check out the CSU-Monterey Bay campus for our daughter. I'm so glad we stayed here instead of right near campus. Cannery Row had so much more to offer. Plus, it was just a 15-20 minute drive to campus from the hotel. Breakfast was adequate. No one starved. Hey, it was included, so I'm not going to be overly critical. It was better than other hotels that only offer a danish and a cup of coffee. Hot options included bacon or sausage patties, but the iffy scrambled eggs had kind of a rubbery texture and there was a rather unusual pancake making machine. Best options: cereal, toast, bagels, Chobani yogurt, lemon poppy seed & blueberry muffins. Good hot coffee, tea and juice. Our room was clean and the beds comfortable. We were certainly cozy in two double beds, but everyone had two nice squishy pillows which provided a very good night's sleep. (I've always been a pillow snob). Showers were hot, but not super high pressure. Friendly staff. Bottom line: If our daughter chooses to attend CSU-MB, we'll be back in the fall.

Our stay at this hotel was very nice! Great location just a couple blocks from Cannery Row! Very quaint hotel and easy to find with easy parking. The room was modern, clean and comfortable. Nice morning continental breakfast and evening snacks. Affordable price and a good value. I would stay here again.

This was the second time staying at this hotel. It's nice being able to park here and then walk to the many attractions and restaurants along cannery row.

Great room with a very good location. Very close to the bay and cannery row area.

The motel's biggest plus is that it's walking distance to Cannery Row. The room we had was on the 3rd floor and required lugging suitcases down ten steps and then up ten steps to get to the correct multilevel section. Desk check-in clerk scrawled the room number so sloppily that we went to a room where the key didn't work and had to return to desk to find out the actual room number. Also, there's no pool or spa. On the plus side, breakfast was good.

Great location. Walk to Aquarium, walk to wharf , walk to whale watch cruise, and walk right out to walk along the bay. Staff accommodating, room comfortable and very clean. Standard Holiday Inn breakfast. Will stay here again.

only stayed one night. convenient to beach, stores, airport, car rental, shopping, not overlooking bay, though.

The good: It's a good location, close to Cannery row and the rooms are cleanish and have been recently remodeled....nothing special. The man working the front counter when we checked out was nice. The bad: Don't let the remodeled rooms fool you...this is an old, poorly designed hotel. No sound insulation whatsoever. Anytime anyone walked anywhere on our side of the hotel, the whole room shook. Anytime a toilet or shower was used, it sounded like it was coming from our bathroom. No weatherstripping around the door, so not only sound, but light was coming into the room all night. I slept maybe 2 hours during the night. Bathroom door lock was broken. TV didn't work because it was unplugged at the back of the TV. Towels felt like they were made out of sandpaper. Vending machines didn't work. I checked with Guiness. The elevator is officially the world's slowest. And completely worthless since once you get to your floor, you have to walk back down a flight of stairs due to the horrible hotel design. Yah, it's only a 3 story hotel, but when you have alot of luggage, it's kind of a big deal. Upon leaving the hotel, I had a near impossible time trying to pull my car out of the parking garage due to the maid having her car illegally parked behind me. Seriously, I've never felt more ripped off in my life. You could stay at a cheap hotel across town for a 1/4 of the price and get the same hotel experience.

Not a big fan of hotels that have room access from outdoors as they just aren't as clean as rooms with inside hall access.. The website pictures for the hotel fail to show this. This is an older hotel and not the typical Holiday Inn Express which I've stayed at many and have had much success with.

No mention that once you leave elevator on second floor you have to go down 6 or 7 stairs and then climb back up another set to get to your room! No real drapes on windows, just shears. Transformer blew at 1AM which turned off all power and set off smoke alarm. After trying to disarm it ourselves with the red button which lasted 15 minutes when it decided to go off again even louder, we had to pull it down from ceiling. When told front desk at check out we were not pleased about sleep being interrupted they offered no real apology or compensation. Dinning room so crowded we had to eat in room.

Hotel was clean, up to date, in the middle of Cannery Row. Staff was nice. They were updating the television system while I was there and I got back to my room early afternoon that day. The staff realized that and had my television connected first. Breakfast was good, lots of choices. Good place to stay for the money.

Very convenient to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Cannery Row shops and restaurants; about a 5 minute walk to Cannery Row and another 5 minutes to the Aquarium. Free parking at the hotel beats feeding the parking meters or paying up to $10 at any of the parking lots. Our room was very roomy. The recently installed satellite tv service is another plus. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast but did not take advantage of the afternoon wine tasting experience on Friday.

As with all the Holiday Inn Expresses we've stayed at, this hotel was clean, in good condition, perfectly adequate, with good staff, decent breakfast and a reasonable rate. Very conveniently located close to the aquarium and lots of restaurants. Our only complaint: the walls were a little thin, so one could hear road traffic and a swinging metal gate on the premises. Worth it anyway.

My bf, our kids and I were looking for a decent place to stay near Cannery Row that a) wasn't going to break the bank, and b) met a minimum with cleanliness and overall appearance. We knew it was only going to be a place to sleep at night, but I'm picky. ;) Maybe it's because it was recently renovated, but this place was PERFECT. Super clean, room didn't give me the heebie-geebies at all, and I had a great night's sleep. Continental breakfast was pretty good - I think I was more wowed by the pancake machine than anything else, though. hehe. Overall, probably the best bang for your buck if you want to be within walking distance to the aquarium. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
