tiny room with just enough space for 1 person to walk around the bed. staff were not helpful. front desk girls didn't help when asking to help get a cab. we were told to go wait on the street (while raining). they tried to charge $10 per key card not returned upon checkout. this type of keycard gets throw away all the time everywhere else so we didn't realize there's a fine print saying it would cost $10.

The hotel offered great customer service. The staff was always available to assist with questions and the concierge provided assistance several times with directions and questions I had about the area. The hotel is located near the subway and a long stretch of shopping near by. The hotel had a spa including the typical Japan bath. The room I stayed in offered enough room for my luggage but found the room to appear not as clean as I'd prefer. I'm not sure if the room appeared a little dirty to me due to needing an upgrade in the furniture etc. or if it was actually dirty. There were stains on the carpet and the chairs in the room looked like they hadn't been either cleaned or anything ever. The sheets on the bed looked clean but I found the look of the carpet, chairs and older toilet and tub left me feeling glad I was only staying for a few days. I wouldn't stay at this hotel again due to the appearance of the room but not based on the hotel staff as they were great.

The staff works very hard to insure a comfortable stay. The concierge was knowledgeable and friendly. The place makes you feel welcome.

Nice hotel. 5 minutes walk to the famous Nishiki market. Subway and mini market are close by. My husband and I booked their least expensive room for 7 nights. The room was tiny. Luckily, they were not fully booked during our stay, we upgraded into superior room which made the stay much nicer. Their buffet breakfast have good options. Hotel staffs are great and helpful. Highly recommend.

Hotel was excellent. Room a little small but manageable. Location excellent.

Received 40 off for booking 4 nights. Was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was for the price I paid. The place looks fancy with black marble lobby and a cathedral in the central foyer used to stage weddings. Room was large by Japanese standards - 12ft x 15ft (20 sq meter) with a comfy queen bed. Bathroom was clean with a full size tub. Great location 2 blocks south of Karasuma-oike subway station/bus terminal. Also just 1 km walk to Gion district - due east. Plenty of cafes, convenience stores (that take credit cards!), and a supermarket within 1 block. It's on a busy street so I asked for a upper floor room facing away for quiet and it was. West facing rooms have a decent view of the sunset over the hills. Great English instruction folder in the room that includes the air conditioner which seems to be standard across the country and whose controls are all in Japanese. TIP - take a picture of their English instruction diagram to use later in other rooms.

Love being in Kyoto, I cannot wait to go back. The hotel was beautiful, the staff was great and very helpful even with our language barrier. We were in walking distance to a lot of temples and shopping and dining. I will stay here my next trip back.

very nice hotel, a bit on the small side, but do the job perfectly! recommend!

Stayed at Hotel Monterey for two nights during a visit to Kyoto for site seeing. The location was great, only a few minutes walk from the subway. Starbucks is located just across the street if you need your morning fix and many of the centrally located spots to visit in Kyoto are within 15-20 mins walking distance. Rooms were clean and the staff was very friendly, helpful and spoke English well.

In Kyoto on a research trip when I had lots of meetings, the Hotel Monterey's central location proved ideal. Staff and services were great. From the hotel I walked, readily found taxis, and easily used the subway all over the city.

Hotel is well situated, staff was friendly and knowledgable, Room was small, even by Japanese standards. Breakfast buffet is not worth the price, there are many excellent dining choices nearby.

Excellent hotel that we got a great deal on. It's got 4 star hotel qualities which we only paid $104/nt for due to a great deal we found online. The room was very clean and beautifully decorated. The only reason why I rated 4 for the staff was because their English wasn't the best. But they were very nice and helpful, it was just hard for us to communicate. Once we figured everything out though, we were able to easily navigate through Kyoto thanks to their helpful maps and recommendations.

Somehow small but bigger than other rooms ive stayed in Japan. Amazing service, maybe a small breakfast should be included but have seen is not the custom in Japan. Overall great experience!!

Very conveniently located. Close to subway and shopping areas.

Kyoto is a wonderful city with a lot to do, see and experience. Monterey hotel is perfectly located and very pleasant.

Extremely clean and comfortable hotel. Also, a great location. However, the rooms are terribly small, especially for kids. Overall, I recommend it.

Stayed a couple of nights - we travel light, but if you didn't you'd have a serious storage issue. Didn't eat in the hotel (breakfast buffet wasn't included, and didn't look good value). But numerous breakfast and dining options around the hotel. Great central location, by bus and subway. Friendly staff. Excellent base for exploring Kyoto.

I would recommend this hotel to future travelers. It's just a couple blocks from the Karasumaoike subway station. Some of the staff do not speak English, but they quickly direct you to staff who can. Everyone was extremely friendly. The hotel sold 1-day Kyoto bus passes at the front desk and provided bus maps which was nice. When we asked for an ATM, they directed us to the bank right next door - however once we got there we realized that the machines were not taking our non-Japanese debit cards. The people who worked at the bank told us the ATM's at any 7-11 would take international debit cards, which was correct. Although hotel booking websites indicated this hotel does not have wireless internet, in fact it DOES have wireless internet now. I emailed the hotel prior to our trip inquiring about this but did not receive a response. If we had known the hotel had wireless, we would not have bought the ethernet-to-USB adapter for the MacBook Air. The hotel does indeed have wireless internet - we were on the 11th floor and the signal was very strong. There are many convenience stores near the hotel and a 24/7 grocery store a couple blocks south. Restaurants in the hotel close early, so if you're looking for a late night bite, it's best to walk around the neighborhood to find a place to eat. We found a cute Italian restaurant on Sanjo-dori just west of Karasuma-dori. And there is a delicious donut place on Kurumaya-cho-dori, just north of Oshikoji-dori, about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Nishiki market is also a short stroll southeast of the hotel. Overall I highly recommend this hotel. If you are looking for a place with lively streets, vendors, nightlife, you'd be better off getting a hotel in Gion. But if you want a quiet, less touristy neighborhood that is convenient to getting around the rest of Kyoto, Hotel Monterey is a great option.

We had a fabulous time at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and the concierge went out of her way to help us with restaurant reservations, photo shoot reservations, etc. The room was clean, and it is walking distance to downtown where all the restaurants and bars are, including Nishiki Market. Highly, highly recommended.

Staff: Friendly and professional. Concierge is very helpful. Room: Clean, and reasonably comfortable. Of course, it's small, but that's to be expected in Japan. Location: Great. 10 minute walk from the lively area of Kyoto.
