Gorgeous property with lovely private onsens. Yummy breakfast but on the price side. Friendly staff. Lots of amenities. Inconvenient location. It was difficult to even get a taxi to pick us up.

The Ajisai onsen Ryokan exceeded our expectations. The onsen is great especially since it is private . The most unforgettable experience we had was the dinner. The presentation of kaiseki course was simple and yet very entertaining. The staff were so great of course.

We had such a wonderful time that we didn’t want to leave this place! Our room was lovely and the onsen were amazing. There were plenty of time slots available and the staff was so helpful and kind especially with my young children. They even brought my 3 year old some crackers to cheer her up when she was cranky at breakfast. There are toys available in the lobby. It really feels like they thought of everything! I’m so happy we were able to have this first experience at a ryokan as a family.

Ajisai Onsen Ryokan presents beautifully. The grounds fit in with the surrounding forest landscape, creating a sense of serenity. The staff were friendly, attentive, and accomodating of various requests, including changes to private onsen access on days when we were engagin in Hakone and Gora's experiences. The ryokan is well situated, close to Gora station and cable car, however, it is a difficult walk due to the general steepness of the area - especially with larger luggage or walking with small children - a taxi is recommended by the facility and myself alike. The waters of the onsen themselves are hot, but not so hot that young children cannot enjoy the experience too. In terms of dining, the breakfast options are traditional or western, and children amd babies are catered to as well. Overall, a fantastic experience, and I look forward to the opportunity to return in the future!

This was a unique experience. The 2 indoor and 1 outdoor onsen were very relaxing. The staff were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The traditional Japanese food was beautifully presented and tasty. The standard of cleanliness was exceptional. About 25 minutes walk from Gora station if you are dragging heavy cases up the hill! Otherwise about 15 minutes.

Wonderful onsen retreat

Great for families looking for some traditional serenity. Tucked away with ability to book private onsen. Yes as a base when exploring Hakone, but get ready to walk.

Awful Disgusting Ryokan

My family and I had an utterly deplorable experience at this ryokan in Hakone, which was so appalling that we couldn’t bear to stay the night. Despite its exorbitant pricing, comparable to a 5-star hotel, the conditions were shockingly substandard and outright disgusting. The onsens, which should be a highlight, were filthy, with hair, bugs, and debris floating in them. They were not cleaned between uses and emitted a revolting smell of rotting organic matter. The room was equally unacceptable—grimy, with a pervasive mildew odor that made it unbearable. Even the windows were so dirty we couldn’t see out of them, further adding to the sense of neglect. This ryokan’s cleanliness and maintenance are nonexistent, and it’s an outrage that they charge premium rates for such a deplorable experience. We left immediately and spent the same amount to stay at a proper 5-star hotel, which was a night-and-day difference. Even though we couldn’t get a refund, it was worth every penny to escape this place. Avoid this ryokan at all costs—there are far better options in Hakone that actually care about their guests’ experience.
