We attended a wedding in downtown Springfield and were really surprised by this hotel. Service was impeccable, the room was stylish (recently renovated), and the balcony was relaxing. The snack bar had a great selection. We truly felt welcome during our short stay in Springfield. I would stay here again without hesitation!
My mate and I drove up from The Sunny South to attend an important event in Springfield, and we stayed for four nights at the Courtyard. It's by far the best place around, but I must say that there is little around here in Springfield. The parking is fine, except that when they have a special event, the lot fills up and you might have to park across the street near the historic building. A railroad track runs near the lots and trains set off my car's motion alarm, which sent me emails twice. Don't park too close to the tracks if you have this situation. The facilities are very nice, the people are great, the rooms are clean and comfortable, but there's no free chow. And there are few places to walk for chow aside from Un Mundo across the street for some good light fare. However, the hotel's restaurant, Mela, is excellent, and a bit pricey, but worth it. You pay for breakfast, via a buffet or a la carte, also. So what? We liked the place a lot and would return... for the next special event.
Location is great for Springfield. The train wasn't that bothersome to us, we were 3 rooms from the end the train runs on. If you are a light sleeper ask for a room at the North end. The parking lot in the back was full so we had to park across the street, the city Christmas tree was up in the normal turn around area so it's a convoluted route to get to the overflow parking, typically I would think it not a problem. Pool and hot tub were very welcome after a 10 hr drive pulling a horse trailer.
First time staying at the Courtyard in Springfield. A little difficult to find with one way streets downtown but large parking area and convenient to downtown restaurants and Wittenburg U. Front desk staff was very friendly and welcoming and a quick transaction on a busy night. Two elevators working for our 3rd floor room. Room was nice size, fridge and AC working well. Neighbors were a bit noisy but finally quieted down after midnight. Room was clean and bathroom well kept. Plenty of amenities available. Bed was comfortable. Wifi adequate. We did not eat in the restaurant or use the bar but it seemed busy and full of people so I assume locals found it to their liking. Checkout was smooth and we were on our way at 6:30am. Would recommend a stay here. Reviews concerning nearby railroad tracks. A couple of trains came through overnight but we did not experience loud noise and CSX does not blow horns at the intersection.
Street noise is a problem but beds are comfortable, rooms are clean. Tub had drain stopped that didn't work. Central location and helpful staff. Pretty fountains in front and in back. In-house Starbucks. Great breakfast for $8.95. Uncovered parking (no fee) behind the hotel.
What's good:The parking is convenient and we never had difficulty finding a space. The hotel is clean and well decorated. It was cheaper than the other Marriott in Springfield. What's not so good: Big trucks and trains rumbling by. No free breakfast. You pay $9-11 for the same items offered for free at the other Marriott. The downtown is just block after block of vacant storefronts-not great for a walk. Will we return? Yes-there was a 20% discount in our fortune cookie.
There's something about the Marriott name that one expects quality and value. We didn't experience those at this hotel. We've had better stays at some Fairfield Inns, supposedly a lower category, than this Courtyard. In fact, I'm starting to wonder what niche the Courtyard brand serves because we received essentially Fairfield Inn value at Spring Hill Suites prices. The best part about our stay was the staff interaction: They are all very pleasant and professional. Anything we asked for, they provided. Unfortunately, the room we used had full-sized beds, not queen-sized as you would expect. Also, their mattresses were so soft my wife and I woke up with back aches both nights. The electrical outlets were few and far between. The flow from the air conditioner blew right across the nearest bed, nearly freezing that occupant while providing comfort to the distant bed. The room does have a mini-fridge, however. Another disappointment was the breakfast. Although the staff gave us the buffet complimentary due to my status, it is normally not. Most items were good but nothing beyond what you would get at those brands that do offer complimentary hot breakfast. The 'scrambled eggs' are certainly nothing to shout about! We aren't planning on being in Springfield in the future, but if we were we would not stay here again. I'd recommend the Fairfield Inn on the other end of town.
I am a loyal marriott hotel fan and have good experiences at courtyards. This one disappoints me. First thing - there is a freight train line 200 feet from the hotel. There was a train at 4:11 am and it made sure to sound the horn as it went by. Not a great way to start the day. Then, after a full day of meetings I come back to the room which has not been serviced by housekeeping. I can do without the bed being made, but I was expecting fresh towels. This is not what I want to deal with when on a business trip - and I don't expect this to happen when staying at a Courtyard Marriott. The good part: The front desk staff is excellent. Loved the restaurant and the bar. The rooms are good. I just can't recommend the hotel based on the housekeeping service and the freight train line.
The Courtyard Springfield Downtown is unique. Nice rooms and staff is VERY pleasant and courteous. The restaurant is different then other Courtyards I have been too! The Mela restaurant has a nice variety on the menu. Steaks, seafood and even wings. The fried chicken sandwich with coleslaw is superb. Andrew the bartender is very pleasant and great with clientele! Gave the hotel a 5 star for service. Rooms are updated but nothing over the top. Great stay for business travel
The location is a bit clouded until your inside the front doors! Hunter welcomes you, and provides all the expectations of staying in a Marriot. Hit the Bistro next door for food and drinks, a wonderful spa and all the great guests you might admire for a wonderful evening in downtown Springfield! Go for it.
