Very unique place to eat and stay. Food was awesome.
Beautifully maintained historic tavern and Inn from 1837. Wonderful food for dinner and breakfast. We stayed in the George Washington room with two fireplaces. Across the hall was the Thomas Jefferson room with the door open. A despondent woman in the 1800s tied a rope around her neck and jumped out of the from window. Her ghost has been seen and heard but she didn’t bother us. The staff is gracious and efficient. Original antiques everywhere. A house at the end of the block was on the underground railway. History at every turn.
When we first checked in, we were upgraded to the Jefferson Room as the room we were supposed to be in had no hot water. The next morning the Jefferson Room also had no hot water - thus, no showers. Other than that - I loved the place. It's old but that's what I expected.
We booked the SpreadEagle Inn for our 24th wedding anniversary on 1.29.18 & also the Tavern for dinner; the dinner was very nice & served well although quite pricey. We arrived at 3:00 pm which is the check-in time; the greeting we received was "we're closed" thinking we wanted the restaurant. Another person came from the office to the desk, apologized & registered us & took us to the Dolly Madison room. The room was extremely warm & we could not get it comfortable the whole time. There was NO HOT WATER in the bathroom so we could not shower! We were told to just "let it run", but that didn't do it. The most disturbing factor was when we found out that we would be THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE in the whole building (that was built in 1837) from 9 pm until 6 am! I can only imagine the insurance ramifications of that if an accident, fire or any number of possible problems would have occurred. We almost decided not to stay the night, but there was no one left to get our charges credited! So we stayed against our better judgment, but WE WILL NOT RETURN & WE CANNOT RECOMMEND.
