This is a tired dirty hotel in need of full refurbishment. I stayed on a super sunny and warm day and because my room was on the inside of the hotel facing a courtyard it was very dark and dingy. Breakfast was your usual buffet affair you get in a business hotel. Please don't spend your own money on this place.

I am a seasoned traveller and I stay in hotels all the time. I've stayed in hotels that were disappointing, or haven't met my expectations (not that I have super high expectations above being able to check in and have a room where it is possible to sleep). Hallmark Hotel Carlisle managed to spectacularly limbo under my very average and reasonable expectations. To be fair, the bathroom was amazing. They managed to capture the look and feel of the bathrooms that you see on repeats of George and Mildred on ITV4 perfectly. It's almost as if George Roper was there...struggling to turn on and off an ancient shower that required the strength of the incredible Hulk and the patience of Mother Teresa to use. If you make it to your morning shower and you're staying on a weekend I'll buy you a pint because in order to get there you have to survive a little Brucie bonus feature that this hotel throws in. Yes, if you are staying on the top floor you get an en-suite rave thrown in! How long do you think the rave lasts for? Can I hear 2am?? Higher or lower?? 4am?? Higher?? who said 7am?? Well, good game good game, but the right answer was 8am. You can try and complain about it, but all you get told is that there are no ear plugs. Not that ear plugs would make much difference since you would need the kind of ear defenders workers use when they are operating a pneumatic drill. The walls might rock you to sleep if you are lucky. Aside from the bar man, the staff looked like the really couldn't care less. The customer service was non existent. Had to wait 10 minutes for someone to come to reception for checking out (there was no where to drop keys). Again, mentioned the noise problem and was told that they call environmental health every two months. I did tell them they needed to warn guests about this problem but it was like talking to a brick wall. So if you've got a spare £100 a night to spend don't waste it on this bunch of cowboys...

Where do I start. 1. Kept awake by loud music all night; asked staff if there was anything they could do e.g. offer to move rooms - no. Was told "it'll stop in an hour or two", as if this was an acceptable response. It was 1am at this point; noise was still ongoing at 8am. Must be a hell of a club in the vicinity. 2. 10 minute wait for reception staff in the morning. Must have known to expect unhappy customers - their opening gambit was that the "night staff had handed over that there were some issues" 3. Complained about the noise in the morning. Was told "nothing we can do. We do report it to environmental health every couple of months". Queried whether guests should be warned that noise may be an issue - met with a shrug. 4. Asked whether I could get any refund due to no sleep and terrible service. Told "can't do anything because you booked through a voucher". Half expected this to be followed by "LOL" 5. More shrugging. 6. Cosmetic problems, shall we say. Wallpaper behind radiators peeling off, mould on the bathroom ceiling. Oh, the bathroom - wouldn't have been out of place in a 1970s sitcom. Very old, shower more like a drizzle. Best get your strength up to actually turn it off and on as well. In summary, it's the shrugging that sums it up. They simply don't care; they'll keep charging £100+ a room because of the location and relative lack of choice elsewhere. I just hope this review helps a few people steer clear...unless you fancy a rave in a 1970s sitcom.

......we would have rated this hotel as terrible.......and diabolical value for money (about 2-3x the cost of a much better room in a Premier Inn - who also give a you a good sleep guarantee). Stayed here for one night and it is unlikely that there will be more until some serious money is spent refurbishing the place. On the positives, the location is very central and staff were friendly, polite and tried very hard. The function room is very good. However, starting with the room - never accept a bedroom at the side or back of the property within range of the nightclub next door - the loud, thumping music finishes at 2.00am and the poor quality secondary glazing in the room offered little help. In any case the room was so hot (the radiator was on - think it was something to do with trying to control the scalding hot water), you are caught between a rock and a hard place with the noise outside and the temperature inside. The mattresses are thin and lumpy in places, so, along with the noise and the temperature, sleep quality was poor. The carpet on the main stairway is threadbare in (many) places and needs replacing and the whole place needs refurbishing. When the housekeepers storeroom door has additional hasps and padlocks - this must give a clue! Breakfast was a bit of a shambles too with staff overwhelmed, melted butter (well it would be if you keep it so close to the toaster), tables not reset and many of the serving dishes needing refilling. All of this cannot be for the lack of business, the place was very busy - someone is just creaming off the profits and not making the overdue re-investments. Finally the parking - tricky to find and only 26 places when you do get there!

Next to train station and City centre. Room needed upgradeding. Tired looking. Silverfish on the bathroom floor. The milk in the room was off. Checking was slow. The receptionist was checking me in then answered the phone to take a booking for afternoon tea. serve the customer who is in front of you!

We had our wedding at the hallmark hotel and the staff were great and the food was great .. We had friends and family who stop in the hotel and there all love it and the bridal suite was great . so a big thank you to all the staff at the hallmark hotel for making our day very special

I have just spent a wonderful evening in this surprising hotel. I came for dinner and to await a very late train. Every member of staff, in the bar, the reception, and the dining room, were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. I stay in lots of hotels, including very upmarket ones - while many hotels are better appointed, I have rarely encountered a friendlier or more helpful establishment. The staff made what would have been a tedious and tiring evening comfortable and friendly. Special mention must go to Emily and Callum - thank you for your kindness.

Hotel is exceedingly tired, dirty and generally run down. Staff try their best. Food not bad. Definitely will not be revisiting! We all felt we should have stayed in a cheaper hotel- it certainly could not have been worse!

We stayed at the Hallmark for 1 night. The location was ideal for catching the early train as it's next to Carlisle station. While their staff was very friendly and helpful it's clear the building could use some renovation. The carpets were pretty dirty, the plaster walls and ceiling are cracked throughout, and the bathroom has black mold growing in many places in the shower and caulking around the sink. (Room 324)

From reading current comments, it sounds as if this hotel has not improved since we stayed there a few years ago. We had a room on the top floor and faced the railway line. The paperwork in the room compendium advised that Queen Victoria had often visited for lunch at the hotel.......would suggest that the top floor had not been improved since Victoria's day. The beds sagged in the middle, the "blankets" were very cheap cotton blankets and they all had large holes. You could not walk on the carpet without shoes as the floor was so sticky! The bathroom: pubic hairs on the tile wall in the shower, over the bath - obviously the bathroom had not been cleaned for years . To top it all off, the toilet seat did not fit the toilet bowl and moved when someone tried to be seated. All this for only 100 pound..........do not stay at this hotel, especially if they give you a room on the top floor - maybe the lower floors are different, but we will not be back to check.
