Nice room on third floor, very quiet and comfortable. bit of a glitch with heating - the automatic controls thought it was summer, but helpful staff provided heater. Comfortable reception areas and pleasant staff
Great location. Right beside the train station. Taxi rank across the road. Just a few minutes walk to town centre. Great comfortable beds and having stayed at the hotel 3 times in the last year, have always had a great night's sleep. Food in the restaurant excellent. The staff are always helpful and polite. As a woman travelling alone on business, the staff are always helpful to make me feel comfortable in the public areas - restaurant and lounge.
Great location next to station staff could not be anymore helpful excellent dinner highly recommend the lamb hotpot and also great choice at breakfast we would definitely be back again in the future and stay foe more than 1 night also the rooms were a good size n choice of bath or shower
Opposite Train Station, small stairs at entrance, also secured ramp for wheelchair/disabled access, reception friendly, helpful. Lift or stairs, used lift to move us & bags, stairs for exercise. Both good. Bed large, comfortable, room warm, good bathroom. Water pressure. Didn't eat at hotel. Clean, highly recommended.
I stay in hotels regularly (80 nights last year?) and so I think by now I have a view on what today’s guest considers as acceptable and value for money. The hotel is in a good central location, opposite the train station and although the hotel has its own car park, it’s very small and the spaces are tight…I hope I don’t get a bump! I arrive at reception and the area is modern as is the bar area. I’m greeted with a very smart and polite gentleman…so far, so good. Sadly, their website doesn’t mention the extra £10 per night parking fee but hey…I’ve no choice, right? The elevator is small (says it takes 6 people but I wouldn’t risk it!) and takes me to the 2nd floor which as the doors open, alarm bells begin to ring. The website describes the hotel as having “elegant wallpaper” and boasts of “splendid architecture”…mmm. I’m thinking that some Polyfilla and a pot of paint, may be in order. However, I am looking forward to my “21st-century room” with its “contemporary interior”, and “superfast broadband.” Walking through the grubby, old-fashioned hallway, pushing through the paint chipped doors, I find my “classic double room” and the alarm bells just got louder! Remember Faulty Towers? Well, O’Reilly’s builders began decorating my room in 1975 and I hope they return soon to finish the job! Dirt and mould surround the windows (old sash type?) and the radiator is the old cast iron type…a dreary room with cracks in the walls, old-fashioned and tired. Clean and modern sheets on the bed at least. The bathroom again was old fashioned and dated (beige/green colour?) with a small glass shelf to accommodate my toiletries…had to keep my toilet bag on the tiled floor for the duration. The bath has mould and staining around the taps and handle. I compare the speed of my 4G phone v their “superfast broadband” and I’m getting 22Mb on my phone v less than 5Mb on their WiFi…I’ll give Netflix a miss tonight! As I’d booked the dinner package (what was I thinking?), I venture down to the soul-less dining room (complete with 70’s jazz music), hoping that the food may just save the day! I see only one elderly couple eating and no other table set for dinner (not expecting a crowd then?), I’m deafened by my trusty alarm bells! With only two white wines on offer (the Chardonnay or ‘house’)…the Chateau Suduiraut must have sold out…my hopes are dashed once again! What culinary delights could be offered on this one-sided card menu? I opt for the cream of vegetable ‘soup of the day’ (which day?) accompanied by one slice of hard bread; I hope the elderly couple have dental insurance. This was truly awful…it looked like jarred pureed baby food…wish it had tasted as good. Using the dated and slightly misshaped cutlery, I attempt the pasta served with a watery cheese sauce and mushrooms (freshly picked from my windows?) and I begin to feel like Gordon Ramsay…the management need some honest Chef Ramsay feedback. I couldn’t stomach eating anymore and I leave discreetly, before noticing that the table hasn’t been cleaned properly. I fear the only Michelin training the chef has, is changing tyres at Kwik Fit! Comparing the experience to similar priced hotel chains such as a Marriott for example, at £215 for 2 nights (excluding the £20 parking fee), this hotel represents very poor value for money…Hallmark should stick to selling greetings cards! Would I return to sleep over? No, but would I return for a casual lunch or coffee with a friend maybe? Also no.
I would like to push the fact that I had a fantastic stay in the Hallmark hotel the service provided was outstanding. However I would just like to thank Natalie the reception manager and the reception staff for the way they treated us. I would like to also thank the young member of staff that got the drinks for our room , she made myself and my partner feel relaxed, her mannerism and personality was amazing. I do believe her name was Amber!! I am more than pleased that I picked the Hallmark hotel for my anniversary get away - I have highly recommended it to friends and family. The only issue I had is I didn't stay for long enough!! I will defiantly be back in the near future. The room was beautiful and the bed was super comfy, Very spacious and modern. The cleanliness of the room and hotel was wonderful!! This hotel is suitable for all age groups because it is right in the town center and next to EVERYTHING. I WILL definitely be back no doubts about it!! Thank you again Hallmark :)
First impressions poor, outside is littered with cigarette butts which were never swept up in all the time of our stay. Also the ramp up to the stairs into the foyer looked dangerous! Our room was dated, the side lamp next to bed flickered on and off when you held in plug to socket. The shower didn't work at all and I felt uncomfortable taking a bath in a not so clean tub. Room was unbelievably warm so we held window open with wedge. Fire alarm in our bedroom went off in our room on the first night at 12.45 and lasted 10 seconds???? Asked for a quiet room but there was so much noise from street level, lots of shouting and swearing from drunken passer bys. Will never stay here again.
We flew over from Germany to spend a couple of days in Cumbria and had a really wonderful time staying here at the Hallmark in Carlisle. The location was excellent, the staff were super and we had some delicious food! All in all, a really great trip, would highly recommend.
I am well aware that the hotel needs a bit of TLC but that is in progress and at the end of the project you will see a lovely old hotel The location of the hotel could not be better just 15 yards from the train station and a short walk from the town Breakfast was a delight as was the staff
Apparently this hotel has been here since Queen Victoria. I assume this is when it was decorated last!!! Grey ripped net curtains mold in the bathroom and very uncomfortable bed. Maybe, you ask, the hospitality made up for these failings? Sadly, NO! The reception staff were very rude not at all welcoming and made us feel as if we were an inconvenience to her playing on her phone! The food was okay and thankfully they didn't charge me any extra for the short curly hair found in my soup!!!!
