Had a great stay for 5 nights. Rooms have been called "small" but on par with any other historic or downtown hotel anywhere else. I felt the staff's grasp of English was better than most other places we visited in Cartagena, my Spanish improved over the week dramatically. I find all the complaints that the staff doesn't speak English in a Spanish speaking country amusing. The restaurant was exceptionally good until I realize Cartagena is one of the culinary delights of all our travels. I couldn't find an average meal if I tried. Roof top pool was nice, room was clean and the staff helpful and willing. Restaurant staff was fantastic, Eduardo is my favorite person in all of Cartagena. Cabs were easy to hail away from the hotel but not outside the door. There are complaints about noise, we stayed on the second floor facing the square and there were random noises from locals, dogs and tourists at odd hours of the night but didn't really bother us. If you're sensitive to noise I would recommend a room not facing the square and sacrifice the view and people watching. We walked to Getsemani, other sites and the boats for the excursions, staff let us know when we should take cabs rather than walk which was appreciated. Had a wonderful stay and would stay here again for the location and satisfied first experience.
Enjoyed 3 nights at the NH Cartagena Urban Royal. Rooftop pool is small but adequate for dip to cool off or to sunbathe; the rooftop offers wonderful views of the city skyline. The hotel is situated on the Plaza de los Coches, which is a vibrant gathering point in the city. It can be very loud outside in the square at night but we enjoyed watching the action from our terrace of our room, and the room had good sound-proofing and a/c. Ivan at the Front Desk, Eduardo in the breakfast dining room and other staff, including GM Jose, were very welcoming. Ivan spoke English so well and was very helpful answering all our questions.
Great location means a sacrifice in the size of the room. Like the larger NH Hotel in Medellin, it suffers from the penny-pinching practice of only 1 hand towel, no face cloths, no facial tissue (e.g, Kleenix), no writing paper, and no pen. Unlike that hotel, did not have to sign credit card slip ahead of time. Friendly staff, fixing room safe quickly. A pleasant surprise was how good the food was in the restaurant with views of the plaza.
We liked the hotel very much. For an international chain we would have expected a reasonably well English speaking person at the front desk at any time (of the day), but they were always very nice. Within the week we stayed there, the A/C and the elevator were out of service once each, but were fixed in an acceptable time. Same for a blind which came down in our room, but not the safety deposit box (had to deposit the passports and money at the front desk). We would go back anytime!
The hotel was great for exploring the Old Town but also to stroll towards Getsemani (which is a more authentic and enriching experience than the tourist trap Old Town). The hotel's breakfast buffet is exorbitant (Peso 40k) vs. the local fayre (Peso 10-15k) in Getsemani. My biggest gripe was the street noise at night from the Plaza. I was in room 315 which faced the Plaza. the street vendors will drive you mad with their incessant bell-ringing and whooping and hollering into the early hours. So the sound proofing is poor. The room size is tight - so similar to a European hotel. Fine for a single traveler and may be OK for two on a short stay with not too much luggage. Oh and if it rains heavily, expect to have to walk through knee high flood water to the taxi ranks! (So bring shorts!)
Recently visited Cartagena for vacation and stayed at the NH Cartagena Urban Royal after it was recommended to me from a friend who had stayed there on their honeymoon. The hotel has the bonus of a rooftop pool to cool you off from the hot Cartagena sun while you relax and take in the spectacular views both day and night. The location right in the heart of the city is great for easily walking to and from several of the attractions. We got stuck inside one afternoon due to rain and ate at the hotel restaurant and the food was amazing. The hotel staff was some of the friendliest and most helpful staff I have encountered, especially Ivan and Esly who both spoke English very well which was a huge help for this non-Spanish speaking traveler. (I know I need to learn it 😊) Ivan helped us straighten out our small room issue upon arrival and answering several questions we had on a daily basis. He always had a huge smile and was patient with us. Ivan & Esly both also helped us book some tours around the city, to Rosario Islands and even our transportation to and from the airport. I emailed them with our flight information and got a prompt response. Upon arrival a driver was waiting for us. Their help made the trip so much more relaxing and enjoyable. Thanks again for the excellent service!
Location is great, but nothing else about this hotel. This hotel is far from others offered by NH in other Colombian cities (We stayed in their Medellin hotel and it was great). Rooms are noisy (especially if you face the square) and very outdated. An unexpected situation happened and we had to checkout one day early. We notified Expedia in advance and despite two weeks’ negotiations between Expedia and hotel, the hotel did not authorize to refund the unused night. Overall, would not stay there again and don’t recommend it.
We traveled to Cartagena not knowing about their liberation festival that lasted all week while we were there. The festivities included nightly parades, a beauty contest and impromptu acts in the middle of the street. The hotel is situated in the middle of the action. The staff were superb, especially the breakfast staff. The breakfast was more like a continental breakfast but enjoyable. The rooms are small but the roof has a pool and an outstanding view.
It was a wonderful experience to stay at NH Urban Royal in Cartagena. The room was modern, clean and well-organized. I really enjoyed staying in that room since the atmosphere invited you to relax. The AC was ok, I never felt hot inside the hotel. Its location was wonderful, I had a magnificent view from my room to admire the beauty of downtown Cartagena. La torre del Reloj looks terrific at night and it is near many other monuments and squares in the old city. There is a swimming pool and a terrace on top of it..Oh my God!!! What a great view. Finally, the people who work there were very efficient. Best hotel in Cartagena ever
The location of the hotel is excellent, you are close to the most attractions of the old city. We enjoyed our room and lovely bedding. It was great to have a little fridge for the leftovers. The staff speaks good English and being very helpful. There were only 2 things I was concern with: One is a super slippery floor in the shower, so be aware! Another is very moldy/musty smell in the elevator and pretty strong too. Otherwise the hotel is quite nice!
