Novotel Bern Expo4.0 out of 5.0

The rooms are dirty and loud - this is a 2 star hotel in dire need of renovation. I have changed rooms and the same applies to both. My roomcard did not work either - it took 4 attempts. Ironing can only be done in an ironing room on the 5th floor??! The staff have done what they can, it is an investment that is needed here to keep those 4 stars...
I thought that it was Novotel, and it would be qualified stay, but not exactly what I expected. The room was average. The bathroom and the toilet is separated. The mini bar is empty (just 2 bottles of water) I'm curious what is the reason of the different cost between Ibıs, Ibıs Budget and Novotel. If Novotel is the best one, I can not imagine the others.
This hotel was a let down in many ways. I think the Ibis next door offers better rooms for less money. While the staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms and overall quality of the stay were below standard. We arrived after 4pm and one of our 2 rooms were not ready. One room was for 2 adults and 2 kids, the other for 2 adults, the smaller room has been made up for 4, we had to correct and redo the beds ourselves. The sheets on all the beds were too small and thus made for an uncomfortable sleep. We asked the reception for a recommendation of a restaurant close by to eat, we were recommended McDonalds! But apart from all this, the rooms were clean, the breakfast was good and the staff were friendly.
This hotel is advertised as a four star - but it isn't. We had an' executive room' - and paid for an executive room and there was no shelf space, not enough closet space and oddly placed electrical outlets. The only mirror is in the bathroom. We have stayed many times in Novotel and Ibis properties. The quality of this Novotel is more like an Ibis but much higher priced. And an additional charge for an omelet is way out of line. The staff however is polite and helpful.
This is my second time at the Novotel Expo and it´s a great hotel. Unfortunately I could only stay for one night as they had an event going on which booked out the hotel for the second night. For the second night I stayed at their sister hotel, the Ibis Budget hotel next door which was simple but not bad at all. In any case the Novotel is great, comfortable bed, large room, strong wifi and a fantastic breakfast.
We were a family of four and stayed at Novotel Bern Expo for 3 nights. We were offered Superior family room which was big and had two beds. Room was clean and had great views. The hotel is conveniently located and easily accessible through tram. We were able to roam around without any problem as tram station is bang opposite the hotel and had a tram every 4-5 minutes. The staff was polite and courteous. Would recommend Novotel Bern expo for the great value and service they offer.
We really enjoyed our visit at Novotel Bern. We were greeted kindly and were able to leave our bags with the front since our room wasn't ready yet. The lobby and room was clean and had all amenities you could want. We had a comfortable stay and were sorry to go. We'd definitely stay again.
Yes the Novotel Expo is out of Bern centre and is clearly not one of the better Novotels - a standard rather faceless building sharing the site with Ibis hotels. There is also nothing of interest in the vicinity of the hotel. Having said that with free public transport offered to all hotel guests in Bern for the duration of your stay (including your arrival) the Novotel Expo is seriously worth considering if you can find a reasonable rate.. seven stops (10 mins max) on the Tram from right outside the railway station/downtown Bern (direction Wankdorf) to right outside the door of the hotel with excellent frequency both night and day. You can also reach the Bears park/old town in 20 mins on foot. The hotel itself is rather anonymous, with standard Novotel rooms. The quality of the breakfast is not particularly good with a badly planned lay out of the dining room leading to some diners eating on high chairs, others on couches and the rest on closely knit tables. Not a great experience. Check in staff were friendly and helpful, dining room staff less so.
Initially we wanted to stay in the heart of Bern, but because we booked so late, we ended up choosing the Novotel. Pros: 1. The tram to the city center stops right outside. We used it a few times and never had to wait more than 5 minutes. It's probably less than a 10 minute ride to the center of Bern. 2. The hotel give you passes for the tram, so it doesn't cost anything extra. We even took the tram back to the train station the day we were leaving and saved the cab fare. 3. The breakfast was good. I loved the chocolate croissant rolls, and there was something for everyone. 4. The room was spacious and clean. 5. There was both a tub and a shower in the bathroom. 6. The woman who checked us in was very nice, and gave us great directions for a scenic walk to the center of Bern, which we really enjoyed. The walk is only about 20 minutes, but we stopped for pictures, etc. so it took us longer. 7. They have an electronic game table in the lobby which the kids liked -- you can play all sorts of games on there. Cons: 1. Check-in took forever. There was only one woman working at the desk, and one person in front of us. I would say we easily waited 20-25 minutes. When it was finally our turn, another woman came out from the back so there were then two women working at the desk. That would have been great 25 minutes earlier. 2. In our room, the toilet was in a separate room from the main bathroom (which had the sink, shower and tub). I did not mind having a separate bathroom for the toilet, but that bathroom did not have a sink in it. I didn't like that. Overall I would recommend this place. It was reasonably priced and clean.
We stayed two nights in an executive room with our two small kids aged 1y and 3y. Small kid slept in big bed with us, and the 3y-old slept on pull-out sofa bed, which worked well for us. Check-in was excellent. Parking garage was full but receptionist went out of his way to find a good solution for us - a very good first impression. Room was nicely decorated and had good view (exec. rooms are on top floor). Very clean, also under the bed where our toddlers wanted to crawl. Toilet is in a separate "closet" at other end of room. Sealing at bottom of shower door was leaking lot so floor got very wet while showering. Sofa bed wasn't really a comfortable bed, but acceptable. Breakfast was crowded and busy, and at times the kitchen struggled to keep up. Selection was decent, but not great. Waiters didn't take away used plates/bowls from our table while we ate. Easy access to city center with complimentary tram day passes which worked very well. Hotel restaurant was closed on Sunday night (and Saturday, I think), so we had to go to the city again with two tired and hungry kids. Complimentary mini bar and parking with executive room. Easily accessible by car. A few things could be improved, but overall we very happy to stay here and will probably chose the same hotel again if we return to the nice city of Bern. Good value. Recommended.
