My wife booked a single room when I was taken to Bern hospital with a heart attack, and the staff were amazing throughout her stay. They supported her and took care of her needs whilst she was alone in a foreign city. Magdalena even offered to put us up for a night when we struggled to find a hotel on my discharge. The room was small, but quite adequate for her needs, and she had no problem with noise at all. The hotel is close to the station and the main attractions of this beautiful city. Obviously our view of this hotel is coloured by illness I suffered, but my wife had no complaints what so ever about her stay. We would have happily stayed there after discharge if we could have got a room.

The photos on the internet of this hotel mislead you. We originally had a dobble room. What we have overlooked is that it has an outside bathroom. The choice was therefore to keep that or change into a “smaller room” with bathroom. As a pregnant woman you have to go to the toilet more often so we have chosen the room with bathroom. However, the room is so extremely small. My husband and I had to sleep separately in a very small single bed and the toilet is so small that you prefer not to shower. The room had no curtains so with a toddler quite annoying. Everyone wakes up early by the light. Incredibly noisy and warm in the room. The elevator has two doors that you have to operate manually. To get to the exit you have to ask through the reception to let the elevator go down further. Super annoying every time. The keys must also be handed in at the reception every time you leave. Don't be fooled with the free breakfast !!! The breakfast is pure pair of cheap slices of cheese and ham, and hard-baked croissants. I wanted a hard boiled egg and the waitress said; “that's what we have” ... runny eggs which I can't eat as a pregnant women. This hotel is definitely not suitable for families, people with disabilities or people that are looking for a little quiet soundless room. Photos on the websites are misleading! Even when you enter the hotel you see all the photos that do not match reality. For this price you can get much better hotels outside Bern or even in Bern. It’s a shame they call this a 2* hotel cause this is more like a hostel or guestroom. We were so so happy after 2 nights lack of sleep to finally leave this awfull hotel.

Stayed here for 4 nights for a conference at the Kursaal. Good points - it was among the cheaper hotels (still expensive by UK standards, but so is the rest of Bern), and about 25 min walk from the conference centre (or a short tram ride), walking distance from station, decent hot water and good water pressure in shower. Free wifi but not reliable. Less good points - I had a really tiny room on the top floor, a shower room / toilet smaller than a cupboard, lots of noise from trams outside at all hours, a smell of stale cigarette smoke throughout the hotel, one very flat and uncomfortable pillow on the bed, tiny rough towel in the bathroom, and particularly, a really disappointing breakfast that was very limited and unappetising, with minimal choice, brown and very sweet fruit salad, and croissants that were very stale. It’s quite quaint and interesting as a building (attached to a theatre, with an old style ‘open’ lift) but the website photos are very flattering and don’t convey the unpleasant smoke smell or the tiny size of rooms / windows on the top floor. If I return to the city I would find somewhere else to stay.

The hotel is 4 minutes walk from the station. As others have mentioned, it is a heritage building with a quaint elevator. We came early and left our bags in the locker provided by the hotel and walked around the incredibly beautiful old town. we got a pass for free transport in Bern and we used it liberally. Our room 305 was a corner room with two windows giving it a spacious look. There was a tea kettle in the room but no fridge or minibar. The room has heaters but no AC. The elevator goes only till the 4th floor so you have to climb up to the 5th floor with bags so inform them in advance if you have mobility issues as we did and they were sweet enough to give us a 3rd floor room. . breakfast was included in the room rate and was adequate. not much variety- one type cheese, cold cuts, eggs, cereals and also freshly squeezed orange juice. The reception staff was amazing. all the ladies were so incredibly helpful, well informed and ever smiling. They need a special thanks. Be aware, that Swiss hotels make you pay the Swiss Frank rates even if you have booked in euros so you could end up losing money as we did in the exchange rate. So Book in Swiss Franks only. Breakfast could have more variety.

In Bern, we could book the Hotel National at the last minute, after our original choice had to shut down due to an unfortunate fire. National is a simple, old-school hotel with its own restaurant & a classic wooden elevator. Has about 46 rooms with basic to nicer furnishings. Being located close to the railway station & just opposite the tram stop does give it an edge over some other luxury hotels. All the major tourist attractions are within easy walking distance. Highly recommended for a short stay in the capital to experience the “urban” Switzerland.

We chose Hotel National because of its proximity to Old Town and the Train Station and it did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly and offered restaurant recommendations and the daily breakfast was great. We'd definitely return to Hotel National when we return to Bern!

I stayed here for two nights and had a single room that was tiny but had everything needed - a desk, a kettle, a bedside table and a private bathroom with a shower. It wasn't exactly cosy - more of a no-frills interior, and other than a hanger for your clothes, there was no closet or shelf to leave things. The room had windows to an inner courtyard which made it much quieter than the rooms facing toward the street which, I heard from others, are fairly noisy. The internet worked perfectly. Above all, I have to say that the staff was incredibly helpful and gracious. They offered me a larger room with a larger desk (but a bathroom with outside access) without me even asking for it and they went out of their way in helping me to print a large document. The breakfast is downstairs in the restaurant and offers a nice variety and they also give you a discount voucher for a dinner and a free drink at the restaurant. Overall, I was happy with my stay and enjoyed the historic feel of the building.

This hotel is within 5 minutes walk of the railway station. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was excellent to have big individual lockers to leave bags in when checking in early. The bedroom was very small and the bathroom very big but all was adequate. Good quality bedding and comfortable. Nice toiletries. Excellent modern bathroom with good shower pressure. Well priced for Bern. Breakfast was very good with plenty of freshly prepared options but don't expect the full cooked breakfast. This is Switzerland remember.

Four stars on trip advisor isn’t meant to mean it’s a four-star hotel. You have to rate a hotel based on its quality relative to others in its price range. This is a very comfortable hotel. The rooms are a good size, very clean and well-appointed. The free internet is fast. The staff are friendly and attentive. The breakfast isn’t fancy, but it’s good. As has been mentioned by others, the location is fantastic, with great access to the old quarter. The only drawback is the lack of air conditioning. The fans don’t quite cool the room enough when it’s hot outside.

I think the reviews below are generally pretty fair. I lean to 4 instead of 3 because location is terrific, very short walk to the station and the main Bern square, and decent to good shopping and dining options nearby. Rooms are a bit small, but clean and functional, and I agree that breakfast is relatively weak although adequate. Hard to say any hotel in Switzerland is a great value, but the price here was reasonable for our stay.
