Assisi is all up and down. Getting to the hotel from the bus stop would have been easier if I'd known my way ahead of time, but once I got my bearings, I realized it was a great location. I had a room overlooking the valley. The hotel was quiet, which I like. One evening I heard singing outside from a building below the hotel. It was very beautiful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant gave me the opportunity to try some local dishes. The only puzzling thing was the restaurant was closed 2 of the 3 nights I was there. But the concierge gave me some good recommendations for other places to eat within walking distance and at reasonable prices.
My son and I took a trip to Italy and one of the things he wanted to do is to stay in a castle. Castello di Monterone was one of the coolest places I've ever been. Even though others were there, we still felt like we had the place to ourselves as we explored the grounds and got lost in the rock stairwells. This place would be excellent for a wedding or romantic getaway, but it was equally awesome for my kid and I. There's a five star restaurant that is amazingly affordable, an excellent complimentary breakfast spread with an array of meats, breads, cheeses, eggs, fruits, drinks....There's a pool and two saunas, gardens to explore and the most peaceful view of the countryside that you'll ever experience. The room was comfortable and well stocked. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful as well. The castle is about a fifteen minute cab ride to the city center where you can visit the Roca Paulina (underground fortress), eat the best pizza at a place right around the corner from the Etruscan well, and meander through the cobbled streets and skinny alleyways of Perugia. Castello di Monterone was my favorite part of our Italian adventure and I hope to return some day!
I picked the hotel due to location. When I saw the other contenders, I was sure I made the correct decision. It's in a very old building, so there are lots of stairs and even the elevator only takes you part way. Some rooms are truly lovely with balconies and even old frescoes. One room had only a tiny window 14 feet up, so it was like no window at all. There was plenty of hot water. They turned the heat off at night (it was in the 30s when we were there, so cold), however,r they give you a remote to use the wall mounted additional heat source if you like. All of the staff is very friendly. Breakfast is nice enough. The best parts are location and friendly staff.
