We had two days staying at the Hotel Schweizerhof and enjoy everything the hotel. The staff were extremely welcoming, there was no fuss, checkin was quick and easy and the room was fantastic. We did not think the restaurant matched the quality of the hotel, the decor a little dated. Prices were also high which is not unusual for Switzerland. My wife and I looked for a more economic place the second night and found a very good Italian restaurant nearby. Other than the restaurant, the whole experience was very good and would love to come back.
Celebrating 160-year history, the Schweizerhof Bern is portrayed as one of the top five-star hotels in Switzerland, indeed Europe. It is in “the Founders of Exceptional Service” booklet for Swiss Deluxe hotels. So is the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel, in which we had just stayed prior to arriving in Bern. The Schweizerhof Bern is not in the same league as Les Trois Rois or any other very top-class hotels in Europe. As a point of comparison, in our opinion it is not even near the same standard as the Schweizerhof Zurich (there is no relationship between the two hotels) which has a four-star classification. At the reception desk on check in and check out , the staff were very helpful and provided good service. But good service ended there. Porters racing (literally) up and down corridors with parts of your luggage (the remainder arrived sometime later) and no communication to guests is not a good look for a five-star luxury hotel. Neither are the seemingly endless presence of housekeeping trolleys, with housekeeping staff clearly a viable presence, and guests being observed chasing staff for more bathroom supplies, due the housekeeping being sloppy and not replenishing essential items. The 160-year hotel has been substantially modernized, the lobby small and the lobby bar uninviting. Nonetheless, the deluxe boutique room on floor five was comfortable. Modernized with some taste, there was sufficient room and the marble bathroom came with a rain shower and separate half bathtub. The air-conditioning was quiet but ineffective – set on 20c (the lowest possible), the room did not fall below 24c despite it not being all that warm outside. Opposite the Bahnhof, the room was very quiet. We did not drink at the bar, or eat breakfast or dinner at the hotel, so cannot comment, although passing Jack’s Brasserie each night, it seemed almost deserted. Given the comparisons in hotels, we are surprised that the Schweizerhof Bern earns five stars; there is a big difference between five-star (and even four-star) hotels.
We spent a weekend ar Hotel Schweizerhof (room 522), please find here the review. I have visted Bern many times, but it was my first time at this hotel. Hotel location is perfect, near from rail station but still very quiet. Room was lovely: very cosy, elegant and modern. Probably the best hotel room that you can find in Bern.. just perfect and VERY CLEAN! Wellness area was small but also very nice and relaxing. Professional employees. The issues started at check-in. No "welcome feeling"... the employee just said "hello, passport and credit card please". We arrived at 2.45pm and they told us that the room was not ready yet and we need to wait until 3pm because the check-in is from 3pm. I find it really weird for an hotel of this category. We went to the "sky terrace" of the hotel to wait for the room. The view and location on the roof is PERFECT and amazing! Unfortunately the service is really poor for this luxury hotel. Only 3 (!) White wine available by glass. In addition the waitress did not say welcome and she come back twice to ask again which wine I ordered. It tooks 15 minutes to get the order. The chips and 2 napkins arrived later. No one say goodbye. Bad price/quality, be aware. Breakfast: stay away! No music in the breakfast room. The "buffet" was really poor and small. No local products (i.e. no "Zopf" bread). Very limited choice of products. You can order food à la carte form the menu. I asked to the waiter how big was the portion. Answer of the waiter: portions are small otherwise we though away food... The waiter was speaking always in German, although I asked many times to speak in English. I order a Swiss Chees Plate. I am Swiss and I am used to great quality cheese. Unfortunately it was not the case. The cheese plate looked like CHEAP cheese. In particular the brie cheese was a really cheap quality as the rest of cheese. No one asked us if we wanted more coffee or other things. It was a very poor breakfast, considering the 40 CHF for each person and the high quality level of the hotel. Is not value for money. I strongly suggest to avoid breakfast here! Generally speaking a lovely luxury hotel. Some employees were really kind proactive and professional. Unfortunately I did not have always the same great client's experience. If you like luxury service and great quality breakfast, I strongly suggest you to stay in other hotels. Generally speaking a lovely luxury hotel if you are looking for a luxury modern room in the middle of Bern.
We stayed here a few nights ago. My husband called the hotel from the train and they had a porter meet us at the train and drag our bags to the hotel. We had a large room on the sixth floor. It was well laid out and had an enormous bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The staff was friendly and always helpful. The hotel had a bell man take us back to the train station as well! We enjoyed our stay at the Schweizerhof very much and will highly recommend it in the future. Thank you to the staff for your hospitality.
I stayed one night in the shweizerhof hotel to celebrate and attend the officers ball that we organized in this hotel. At some point during the gala dinner I wanted to order alcohol that was not included in the package for the table,I was told that it wasn't a problem and I would just have to pay a separate bill (pretty standard up till now). However the waitress came back and told me it would not be possible and I would have to go downstairs to the bar to order the alcohol and bring it back up myself. I was told the staff would not be able to print out a receipt and put it on a platter along with the beverages and bring it up... in a 5 star hotel for a 175fr bill the client has to get up go down to the other bar and do it himself. I decided to talk to the banquet manager and she told me it was what she was told to do by the f&b manager and that if she said yes to me then she would have to say yes to everyone (which should be a standard in a 5 star lhw hotel) when this point was initially brought up at the bar downstairs for clarification the waitress was quite rude and dismissive of my comments and would cut me off and say "I don't make the rules" and would not listen to a customer complaint, and it's not because I wear a uniform that I am not still a 5star client. It's a shame for the f&b service because the rest was great from the rooms to the front desk quality was here, however I am baffled of the level of service and care in f&b department for a leading hotel of the world.
We stayed for three nights and found the Room with the King bed and bathroom to be very luxurious. Loved the rain shower in the bathroom. Service at the hotel was also very good. Great location close to everything. Would stay again for sure.
Can't recall the last time I wrote a review about a burger mainly because I rarely eat them. But this was superb! So couple of weeks back me and the good lady were wandering around Bern and as happens, our minds turn to food. You know how this goes; wandering strange towns or cities and no idea where to go and really sometimes it's in the lap of the gods if you pick somewhere great, ok or completely duff. The Schweizerhoff caught the eye as its just off the square next to the station. It has a rather grand looking bistro on the ground floor which looked just a bit too formal for our needs so we went into the main hotel. There's a wonderful busy buzz about the reception area and its staffed by some rather efficient and very friendly concierge team who directed us towards the bar area. This is a cozy little area with a lovely contemporary almost art deco atmosphere. Nice furnishings and we blagged a great table for ourselves. Staff are uber efficient and very friendly and professional - smart uniforms, well trained and welcoming- that goes a long way in my book. Started with some excellent fresh made breads and olives which are to die for and followed up with the best beef burger I've ever tasted- homemade, no gristle and packed full of flavours- maybe some herbs in there too. Washed it down with some great house red- just excellent combo. So great staff, great food, lovely atmosphere and you've got a great lunch experience - don't walk by if you're in the area- will return one day.
Central location in a great walking town with a staff eager to please. We had the largest King bed I have ever seen and a comfortable loveseat by French windows that open to fresh air. It was a good value as an extensive breakfast was included and even passes for the bus or tram. Our only complaint was that the “green” air circulation system that they call “climate neutral” felt stuffy in the room where the temperature never got lower than 71 though the nights were quite cool. They provided us with a floor fan that was noisy but helped a bit to help us sleep better.
We stayed four nights at this hotel. We were upgraded from a Queen room to a King room. As we had asked for a quiet room we were on the courtyard side. Our room was on the sixth floor which is the same level as the Sky Terrace. This means that (unlike other floors) there is no security on this floor and everyone has general access. The bathroom was very large. There was a separate bath and shower and two hand basins. The bed was very comfortable. Each day the hotel supplied us with complimentary water, soft drinks and fresh apples. The breakfast was included in our rate. However it doesn't really compare to breakfasts of similar level hotels in other cities. It was the only disappointing part of our experience at the hotel There are probably better options for breakfast in the cafes nearby. The gym was very nice including two treadmills, cross trainer, bike and free weights. The hotel also offers headphones for the exercise equipment. My husband had a massage at the Spa and said it was amazing ... 5 star service. I would definitely stay here again if I visited Bern another time.
This was my first time in Bern and I was really impressed with the Hotel Schweizerhof. It is right by the train station which is a negative for me as it makes the entrance busy and noisy, but it means the city is easily walked from the location. The room I had was immaculate and well designed. The gym and spa were great and done to a high standard. Also the service from check in to housekeeping was excellent. Overall a really nice hotel to stay in.
