I stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Phuket for my BIRTHDAY and experienced one of the most alarming failures of food safety and guest care I have ever encountered at an international hotel brand. My one-night stay was miserable, as was my birthday the next morning. Everything was ruined.
I ordered a crab curry dish that did not disclose fish meat as an ingredient. I am allergic to fish meat but not shellfish, which is why I reasonably believed the dish was safe. After taking a bite, I asked the server directly if it contained fish and was told no. Only after I continued eating did the server return and say she had “checked” and that yes, it did contain fish, by then, the exposure had already occurred.
I suffered an allergic reaction consistent with fish exposure, a medically recognized and potentially life-threatening condition. As a foreign traveler, I did not seek hospital care due to concerns about navigating an unfamiliar medical system and the cost, but the reaction caused real physical symptoms, distress, and ruined what was supposed to be a celebratory stay.
What happened next was even more disturbing.
When I went to the front desk seeking help, asking for something as basic as a Sprite to assist with breathing and discomfort, but because room service was closed there was no carbonated drink anywhere in the whole hotel, I was directed to a 7-Eleven up the street by the MANAGER.
