We recently stayed at The Bear Hotel Portsmouth and found the accommodations to be excellent. The room was very nice, well-decorated, and met all of our expectations for a historic downtown stay. All other supporting issues, including the initial check-in and the facilities, were handled well. However, we encountered a frustrating situation after our departure. Following our checkout, a heavy rainstorm began. We simply wanted to sit inside the common area for a short period to wait for the weather to clear before heading to our next destination. Unfortunately, a female staff member was quite firm and did not allow us to remain inside. While we understand the hotel has policies regarding checked-out guests, the lack of flexibility during a heavy downpour felt unwelcoming and inconsistent with the 'quaint and cozy' atmosphere the hotel promotes. Aside from this lack of hospitality at the very end, the rest of our stay was perfectly fine.

Staff were very friendly and accommodating, there is a room to leave luggage (locked). Room was large and clean with a comfortable huge bed. Breakfast was continental style at first, cereals, toast fruits etc and was happy to supply soya milk. More things available for non vegans like in most hotels. What stood out was that the cooked breakfast was cooked to order so fresh and less waste, plenty of options. I had the vegan english breakfast and it was plentiful, I couldn't finish it.

Booked for w nights but due to work comittments gss to travel down just for the 1 night. Firstly, the hotel did nor receive my email about arriving late and with my dog as wastold they dont receive messages from hotel.com, which I thought odd. We were given room 21 right ip the top of the stairs. Which my elderly dog found slightly difficult as very steep. The room.was very neglected and frayed carpet. Floorboards felt like you werte going to fall through and a very tired old bathroom. The room boiling hot so had to turn off radiators and open windows but very noisy with traffic all night long. As we weere by a door we heard the door slamming all night as well. The bed very old and too high for us. I went sown to the bar to order some lunch but a really strange atmosphere and not very festivve so changed our minds and waited for our family dinner at the Wheelwrights. I am so glad we didn't have to endure it for 2 nights. The place needs a complete renovation We werre given room 21

It is a very old building, the floors in the old part of the building including in the rooms are uneven and sloping to such an extent it is uncomfortable to walk on. The wiring gave cause for concern as the plug sockets were hanging off the walls.
