We checked in into this hotel for four nights last week. It was autumn and the weather at home wasn't very nice. Check-in was fast and efficient. We got all our information about the hotel on a sheet of paper. The room itself was not very big, but sufficient and efficiently laid out. We dined at the hotel the first night, the menu was simple, three starters, five main courses and three deserts. Nothing exciting, just good food. Breakfast however, was totaly far from unexciting. A wonderfull buffet breakfast was served every day. All you need for a good start of the day was available. Bikes are for hire at the hotel and Vlissingen is within easy reach. The beach is just a short walk away. What more does one need?
The upside of this hotel is its fantastic location - within a three or four minute walk to the dunes and five minutes to the fabulous Zeeland beaches and there is ample parking space. The rooms are reasonable although a bit on the small side. Perfectly acceptable for a long weekend but would become a bit cramped for much longer, as would the storage space. We had a room with a view on the dunes but it was on the ground floor in front of one of the car parks. Fortunately we were there just a month ago but otherwise there could be quite a bit of foot traffic which could be a bit noisy in the summer months. Food quite good. Bathrooms simple but very serviceable and practical.
Lovely hotel with excellent breakfast. Too much to choose from. 50 meters to the beach. Friendly helpful reception. Landview or seaview is not a lot different (you are bihind the dunes so you can never see the sea. We have been here more than 10 times now and it never disappoints.
When I read the John Cleese review, I was appalled by the tone, we experienced none of this! He must have had very bad luck or ... Rooms are modern, clean and well equipped. The restaurant is good, friendly, but some small things annoyed me, I ordered a schnitzel which came without a sauce, it's a bit too dry then. I won't eat sugar so I got a nice mint tea instead. I recommend this, when you've got a deal price like we 119€ for 2 nights/person.
Considering the rather steep price, one would expect a luxury hotel. While Westduin is certainly not bad, there is something about it that reminds of a budget hotel. Which makes total sense, because that is exactly what it was initially. The rooms have been refurbished quite nicely, but they are hardly luxurious. A bit disappointing, really. The location is great of course, which must count for something.
Golden Tulip Westduin Faulty towers! But no John Cleese and not funny. This is possibly one of the worst hotels i have ever been in...and i have been in a lot of great and terrible hotels in Holland and all over the world. Not only is it terrible in its own right, it charges top bill prices that are totally unwarranted. Where to start? The first nights the heater does not work, i spend hours on the phone, and finally i get a small radiator to compensate. The plug cover on the water outlet in the bath is broken so you find yourself sitting on an open graty painful grid. (Oh and btw....this is a room that goes for between 179 to 259 Euro per night depending on the season). I spend almost every visit dealing with reception and staff problems. I ask to have it fixed, they say they will, i arrive and again i sit in a tub with no cover...they forgot. Then the food! Dinner: its awful, for those of you who watch Gorden Ramsey on tv, he would close the restaurant immediately! Sometimes they bring room service without a cover! So the food is cold..sometimes no salt and pepper...the bare essentials of room service . The food is truly disgusting, working hard and wanting to relax after a long day i have tried different things hoping perhaps the ''chef''' has an aversion for certain foods, but whatever you order it is consequently terrible. I now either eat out or bring in food from a cafeteria... The breakfast! Many people in the reviews say it is great! What is great about it!? It is terrible. only one good thing is organic muesli. No chef making fresh eggs. Scrambled eggs, that are soggy and miserable tasting lie in a pan for hours and hours. The assortment of meats is industrial type slabs of meat that taste./..yes awful. The bartender....and old unfriendly character that has no clue of the word customer service and is a clear deterrent to drinking. A rusty water kettle, a health hazard in the room, i call and complain and they bring a new one, the next week i am back and want tea, they have put the same rusty kettle back in the room! It goes on and on. They act friendly, but obviously they do not care. It is mistake after mistake, bad food after bad food dish. I dislike leaving ''negative;'' reviews but it is all true. And when a hotel does so many things wrong, cares not about its customers then this is what you get. I do not only give this hotel 1 star, i seriously do not advise staying there! Of the beds...there is a sign from the matras shop (no joke) saying how great they are and where you can buy them....they are hard and awful....the pillows are the type filled with lumpy foam (yes the ten dollar type from the cheap motels). This hotel is an offensive cash cow. Outside on the (breakfast) terrace there are ashtrays on all tables, it is a non smokers nightmare with people smoking everywhere. The room i had was an 90's style room, their best suite...with a cd/radio player setup from the 90's (no joke), and ...their claim to fame...a nespresso machine...truly the only nice part to the hotel.. I stayed in their junior suites as well, the windows and balconies are above the smokers corner directly below you so you inhale smoke instead of a sea breeze all the time.... The only nice part is an adorable asian cleaning lady who brightens your day with the most beautiful smile and a sincere Asian receptionist. All staff at reception are kind but that does not remedy the long list of wrongs at this hotel....
Was here for a 2 day management conference this week. The outside could do with a lick of paint but the hotel inside is clean and nice. Rooms are modest and comfortable with a bonus of a Nespresso machine. Breakfast provides a nice variety of different food and drink and was good, also open until 10:30. Location is brilliant and right on the beach opposite dunes with some beach activities available.
The room was nice, clean and spacey, with a big bathroom and separate toilet. Very comfortable beds. Also nice was the balcony, eventhough we didn't have a "dune view" room, it still faced the dunes. The staff is very friendly. Breakfast is very good, great selection of all kinds of bread, cheeses, meats, fruit, pastry, juices, eggs, etc. It's also nice that breakfast is until 10.30am, which means you can sleep in a bit. And the selection is still great even at later time. The location of this hotel cannot be beat, if you are looking for a quiet beach vacation. You just cross the dunes and you're at the beach. You can rent bicycles, parking for your car is free. Also nice is the indoor pool, to swim a few rounds even when the weather is not so good.
The positives: location, the rooms are OK, staff and info at reception, great breakfast spread. The negatives: tiny, dark bathroom, the dinner is so-so and staff at dinner take way too long (overworked or not experienced enough). There are better choices in the area
The rooms were okay. Big enough, nice bathroom and shower. With a balcony. The rooms were clean, the service was friendly and quick. The beach is awesome, especially at sunset. Free parking at the hotel, small swimming pool and fitness room. Breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choices, including fresh fruit (juice), salad, meat, eggs, cheeses, yoghurt, local bread,.....
