Great location and friendly flexible staff. Nice views from the roofdeck.
Beautiful roof deck with a killer view. Cold air conditioning. Tasty breakfast. Friendly staff. Nice local neighborhood to wander around in.
Very attentive staff, clean room, very good food, excellent atmosphere. Convenient walk to local sites.
This hotel is mis-categorized as a 4 star, when in reality it should be a 2 star. We stayed one night on a layover and wanted a comfortable place to hang out until our flight. The room was dingy and dark, with linoleum floors and an "all in one" bathroom where the shower is not separate and gets the entire room wet (like youth hostels I've stayed in back in the day). The room had one window that looked out at a small hill about 6 feet away that was covered in trash and had a dog rummaging through it. There was a 12x12" pole right in the center of the room which was a hazard when getting up in the middle of the night in the dark. It's on a small but crazy busy street lined with local stalls selling bric brac and street food (but not the kind you would eat). On the positive side, the staff were nice, and it is a 10 minute walk from the Schwedagon temple. But I definitely would NOT ever stay here again, even for a short stopover.
This was my first trip to Myanmar and I chose Merchant Art because of its proximity to the Shwedagon Pagoda. I did not plan my trip much, so when I got to the hotel, I asked the staff for recommendations and they helped me come up with fun ideas and book tours. They were amazing and super helpful. Yangon is still developing its urban tourism industry, so some of my ideas (such as a cooking class) were not available or priced well, but we found lots of alternative things to do. Regarding location, turns out traffic in Yangon is extremely bad (my friend said it reminded him of India) and going anywhere downtown or to the airport takes forever, but the streets around Merchant Art move better, so I don't feel like being away from the center of downtown was a drawback. The hotel has a nice roof where you can view the pagoda and the lobby is well furnished. Breakfast was also super delicious. Wifi in the bedroom was a little bit spotty, so we sometimes lounged in the lobby to use the faster wifi, but I expect that will improve with time!
