Mercure Wellington Central City Hotel and Apartments4.0 out of 5.0

Great location, very close to Courtney Place and the CBD, Te Papa, only draw back to access the restaurant and bar, you have to walk around the corner to their sister hotel. Good views over the harbour
Firstly was apprehensive after booking and reading some of the previous reviews but when we arrived in our room it was not as bad and I thought it might be. Positives: Great location right in the centre of town. Nice having a kitchenette but was very small area. Nice having separate room for lounge and bedroom. Room was clean and adequate. Negatives: First night, Friday..... loud loud loud young people shouting and singing whilst walking around town and this went on until around 3am. This is NOT Mercure's fault but a problem when staying in the CBD. Funnily enough Saturday night not so much noise and Sunday no noise. The other negative for me was the bed. It needs to be changed. Very soft and not good for my back. The price was good for the three nights but I would NOT stay again because of noise and the bed.
Not the worst, but not the best either. Staff were great - rooms, not so much. The room I had was pretty tired and could use some attention (marks on the walls, chipped paint on doors and door frames). Extractor fan in the bathroom was within the shower itself and was choked with dirt and dust. I stayed 3 nights, bed was made each day but bathroom didn't seem to get cleaned, neither did the coffee/tea stains off the shelf in the cupboard where coffee/tea stuff was. There's lot of options in Wellington - I wouldn't recommend this one.
Stayed for 3 nights and the location right in the centre of Wellington can't be beaten. On our first night we arrived late and asked if there was anywhere open to go for a drink or meal. The receptionist was pleasant enough but said no, everywhere was closed by 10 pm. We went out and found bars serving drinks and food within 5 minutes. The room itself sounds as if it's going to be great as there's a separate living room but it's really small and not very attractive. If I ever had the good fortune to return to Wellington I would rather stay elsewhere.
I stayed here due to my limited available options on my work travel agent. If the site hadn't forced me to pay in full up front i would have moved. THe room was tiny and the window next to my bed looked out over a multi story car park (6th floor) which was lit all night (at least while i was awake). The shower had a loud exhaust fan in the wall at head height. THe desk didn't have a lamp above it. Internet wifi was appalling - 2 bars and constant dropout. Walls marked with presumably furniture movements. Cupboards made out of repainted tacky formwood. No problem with staff though. At $150 i could have done far better. The one star is for the location.
Well received at reception and helpful staff. Good central location but the lack of onsite parking could present a problem. Also the lack of a breakfast room on site is very inconvenient for early morning starts.
We had nothing but a great experience staying at this hotel for one night. We were lucky enough to receive a free upgrade to a 1 bedroom suite, which was very nice. The staff were extra helpful and friendly when I called before our arrival to find out about parking options. And the staff at reception were very efficient and informative. The bed & pillows were very comfy! The location is great right in the centre of the city and walking distance to mostly everything. I would definitely stay here again.
I stay here at least twice a month and it is the preferred accommodation when on business in Weĺlington. The apartments are spacious, clean and comfortable. The location is very handy and the staff are always incredibly friendly and helpful. Can't fault it.
My husband and I have just stayed here for the weekend having gone to Wellington for the ABs vs Lions test-match. Because this is a huge sporting event our choices were limited but this hotel/serviced apartments did look ok on the website. But it was far from ok. I agree with the previous comment of friendly staff. The lady who checked us in was very nice. But when we initally arrived at the reception desk the one staff member who was present was on the phone and essentially ignored us. I understand you have to deal with one thing at a time but surely eye contact and a smile to acknowledge us wouldn't have been too much to ask for...? Another staff member then turned up and attended to us. We were on the 16th floor and did have a nice view. We also had a comfortable king sized bed and the location is very good. But I don't have anything else positive to say about it unfortunately. The 1 bdrm 'apartment' we stayed in was tiny...so much so that we were practically falling over eachother each time we got up and moved around. Quite ambitious to call it an apartment in my opinion! It was small and pokey and poorly maintained. There was no TV in the bdrm (despite there being a power point and aerial socket in the wall) and the TV in the lounge was small with the power cords wrapped around it. The kitchenette was the size of a broom cupboard. Likewise the bathroom. The water pressure in the shower was very high (usually a good thing) but the shower rose very small so it was like trying to shower under a fire-hose. And on the morning we checked out we ran out of hot water half way through the first shower. So I had a cold shower and hubby missed out altogether. There wasn't really anywhere to hang towels except above the toilet....yuck! I could hear the lifts going up and down from our room...quite noisy. Overall, there were a couple of good points (namely the location) but the poor quality of the room really over-shadowed that. I would also like to mention that the 'balcony' was not something I would feel safe to stand on and I would question whether the balconies are even compliant/legal. We wouldn't stay here again for all the tea in China...
Positives to the Hotel are location and staff at reception and housekeeping were friendly. Once again great camera work makes potential customers assume that the rooms and the premises are flasher than they are in real life. The entrance and reception reminded me of a bordello set from a movie. The rooms were clean enough. As there were four of us we were allocated rooms side by side. These are advertised as apartments, I would strongly disagree . One room we were told had a kitchen while the other had a cabinet housing a microwave with tea/coffee facilities and utensils. Although different facilities, the money charged was the same. The kitchen was basically a small square with room for one person. This "apartment" was frozen and the heater was nowhere near adequate. In contrast the other room with the cupboard was absolutely boiling. No drawer space for clothing which was annoying as we were staying for 5 days. Launderette facilities are available on site (another cupboard) which houses 2 washers and 2 dryers. However I was unable to use it until lunchtime as the staff were using it constantly the morning I was trying to access it. Generally the Hotel needs a drastic makeover and currently is well overpriced for what you get for your money.
