Base Backpackers Wanaka - Hostel

Stayed here as part of a bus tour. Wanaka itself is an amazing little town and was 1 of the highlights of NZ for me. But this place is a kip. Woke up in the morning covered in bites from the bed, the staff could not have given less of a toss if they tried and were very unhelpful and the facilities were filthy. This place turned me off staying at any other base run backpackers during my time in NZ.

The location was walking distance to everything, we had a private room with ensuite. The room was good, the amenities good, however the sheets had not been changed from the previous guests, as we found hair and other things in the bed. This was very disapointing as we loved everything else.

Great location, but messy and dank atmosphere. Showed up and there was no one at reception and 5 other people waiting. Door would slam really loud on the room and the ensuite bathroom was tiny with no where to hang a towel or put your stuff. There was not even a lid on the toilet. Before and after checkout, the luggage storage is just a completely unsecure enclave by the hostel entrance. YHA across the street is only slightly more expensive and is bright, airy, quiet at night, has roomy bathrooms and does not smell like staff accommodation for ski bums (i.e. old socks).

I had my own double bedroom and there were hairs everywhere on pillow, linen, blanket (which was obviously dirty for a while). HSK was friendly and quickly changed everything. Then there was hair in the sink and a ball of hairs in the corner of the bathroom. The next day I got new towels with hairs inside. So this place needs to sort out the washing of their linens. The kitchen is very filthy. Location is good, room was nice and warm, good view.

Location is definitely the best part of this Base - just minutes from the lake and New World is around the corner! Rooms and kitchen however are too small and air in the dorms gets really thick when they are full...

We booked here as motel we wanted to stay had no vacancy. Surprisingly good for being a backpacker. 3 of us had our triple room with fresh sheets and towels also toiletries in the bathroom. Clean rooms, good location. Check in and out was smooth. highly recommended

My lasting memory of this place will be the filthy kitchen. It was really bad. I scrubbed the whole work surface down myself. There was one wet and very dirty t-towel that must have been crawling with germs. While eating dinner a member of staff was loudly talking about how she was in charge of house keeping while her long hair was all over the work surface. Someone make her take a basic food hygiene certificate. It was a relief to get out of the kitchen. Same member of staff at reception rattled through instructions of where everything was so fast it was clear she just had to say the right things rather than engage with customers. I think only have by WiFi for certain hours in one room of the hostel is also pretty cheap considering you’re a chain. Beds comfortable. Supermarket close.

Good stuff: The rooms are quite roomy, there are outlets and personal lights. Showers are quite clean, spacious, with good pressure. Cheap food and drinks at the bar. Central location. Bad stuff: Kitchen was really messy and small for the size of the hostel. The staff was a bit indifferent and not very passionate.

Unfortunately this was one of the worst hostels by far on our visit to New Zealand. The rooms didn't feel particularly clean with stains on the sheets. The kitchen however was the worst part. The hobs were pretty dangerous, burning our dinner in open flame. You had to be careful not to burn yourself while lighting the hobs. There were 3 forks available for around 20 people wanting to use them which wasn't good enough. The kitchen was very small considering the amount of people staying in the hostel, which felt packed. However, we appreciated having a radiator in the room, which was one positive. Wifi was also good. Do not come to this hostel if you can avoid it!!!

I can not thank the staff at Base wanaka enough, they are amazing. They helped us out a lot with all of our needs and had some great advice about the local area. The hostel it self in awesome, great facilities, clean and tidy rooms, a bar downstairs and the icing on the cake... incredible mountain views!!!!! We love you Base Wanaka! thanks again.
