Base Backpackers Wanaka - Hostel2.0 out of 5.0

We had a very nice room, it was clean and we hade a TV and our own bathroom which was also clean. The shared bathrooms are also very clean. The beds are comfortable. It's quiet in the hostel. And New World is a minute walk, right next to the Base. Spend a good night here.
We spent two nights in this hostel. The rooms was spacious and clean. Staff was friendly and helped us to organize our weekend trip. It's located in the center of town and a new world is next door. Had a nice time here. Thank you guys
I had the pleasure of staying here and I have to say my room was spacious and clean the bathrooms where clean the kitchen although small was nice and the fact they grow herbs for guest use was very nice I was unfortunately unwell during my visit and the staff where very helpful and pleasant it is located well in town a short walk from most things and the lake if you are passing through wanaka and need a place to stay i would recommend and the mint bar beneath was very pleasant to with friendly staff that know how to make a good espresso martini.
Myself and a friend stayed here for one night we were lucky and had an ensuite our room was comfortable and warm the bathroom was nice with awesome water pressure with amenities is always a bonus! The hostel it self has a great kitchen with a balcony and the bar next door does daily promotions we really enjoyed our night.
I rarely post reviews but the customer service here was atrocious. We checked in as a group of 8 and were split into separate rooms (splitting up couples that were traveling together) when we pointed this out the woman told us to go away as she was too busy to sort out our room. She even called us stupid for checking in as a room of 8. She then continued to talk about how stupid she thought we were to her colleague behind reception. Eventually 7 of us were put in a room together but 1 person got put in a dorm on the other side of the hostel, without an apology for the confusion! Overall the hostel wasn’t very nice either. The room was tiny for 4 bunk beds. I’ve stayed in Base hostels across NZ and overall they’re all much the same - bad quality, dirty and overpriced!
The only plus was the staff. Friendly and efficient. Other than that this hostel just takes advantage of tourists who have no place to stay, ignoring the standards of the tourism provided in New Zealand. Even though the hostel is located in a great place, inside it feels like a factory. The rooms are extremely small and as a result the atmosphere is bad during the night. The toilets and the kitchen were messy and smelly. The facilities are cheap (eg. the beds). The price is still high so it is not even a good deal for the money. Consider paying 10 dollars more for something else or staying in a tent - most of the people in my room did not sleep. Providing accommodation to tourists does not only mean providing a matress.
- WiFi only from 7am to 7pm - friendly and helpful stuff - Specials at the bar (don’t eat the tacos) but 5$ tequila or 5$ beer - Sadly very small and impractical kitchen (not enough space in the fridge,..) - Dirty bathrooms
We had a lovely private room and ensuite. It was not noisy and we had an enjoyable stay. The communal areas were how people treat them for example people leaving a mess in kitchen. But that is not the places fault but the visitors! Would stay again!
I understand that this is a backpackers, but the standard of backpackers all over NZ for similar prices is a lot higher than this. The room was filthy, the bathroom was filthy, and while I know they're aware of the noise given that they provide you with a set of ear plugs each in your room, it's still obscene lying in bed listening to guys trying desperately to pick up girls at the bar below your bedroom window at all hours (extra shout out to the guy who brings his acoustic guitar backpacking...). We checked out early and checked in elsewhere and got a nice hotel for only a little extra per night. I would only recommend this place if you're backpacking alone and you're eager to meet people, as there was a diverse range of travelers staying there.
Pros first: - Location. It is town and you can walk to everything. A large supermarket is opposite. - Staff are friendly and give good advice on things to do. Cons: - Door key card broken so you are consistently locked out of the room unless someone is inside to let you in. Annoying to keep getting a member of staff to fix the door lock each time. Staff were all aware it was broken and did nothing to rectify it. They could have offered complimentary lock hire and let us keep our valuables locked, and then disabled the door lock until 1am, for example, when everyone is in the room. Then enable it again. - They need to label the beds and assign you a bed. A girl woke me up at 12:20am, shining her phone light on me. She started shouting "You are *f'in rude. You f'in stole my bed... blah blah blah." I was completely shocked as this was the only bed that was available. The only other one that had no one sleeping in it had the duvet and bed sheet messily thrown on it so it looked like that bed was already taken by someone. I apologised and offered her my bed again but she just kept saying how rude I was. It was quite upsetting and I found it very difficult to get back to sleep again. Either this girl is a crazy lady, or the hostel staff forget to replace new bedding. I don't know. But none of this would have happened if the beds were labelled and we were assigned a bed. - There is a loud generated outside the all girls room. It stops and starts every 5 - 10 minutes, so bring ear plugs. - Some beds have plug sockets and a little light. Others don't. - Heavily under staffed during check out. During the busiest check-out time (8am - 10am) there was no one on reception for at least 15 minutes. This hostel has potential to be awesome but it lacks attention to detail. Because there is so much demand for accommodation, they can afford to provide crap service. I would suggest this is a management issue, rather than the staff.
