Central Maui Hostel2.0 out of 5.0

The location was next to public housing on one side and a recovery clinic on the other side. However, 2 or more blocks up the street was a nice small town downtown area. While unpacking, toothless men circled the parking lot and leered at me. There seemed to be a steady stream of people who looked homeless and not at all like travelers. I felt uneasy for my safety and was happy to have my husband with me. The room was clean and fine except there was no air conditioning and the both windows were small as noted in the photo, so that there was little to no ventilation. The room was very hot until late in the evening. We stayed one night in order to catch an early flight home. The facility itself was acceptable, well maintained and managed.
This hostel is a good option if you need to crush for one night and want to save money. $ 88 sounds better than $ 250+ you are going to spend at most of the hotels in Kahului. 2 of us stayed in a private room with a shower, room did not have an A/C but we were comfortable without it. The room is indeed very tiny with only a curtain dividing bathroom and sleeping area. Again it is OK if you are just crushing there for a short period of time. They provide free toiletries. Parking and wifi are included. Dena, the host, was very helpful and sweet. My suggestion for the owner is to arrange a cosy common area, like most hostels do. That will probably bring up the ratings.
I travel solo a lot and have never been in such a poorly set up hostel. The room was about 8 foot by 14 foot. Which was only enough space for the 2 bunk beds and minimal standing room. They crammed 4 of us large males into this tiny room, which didn't have any lockers or means of securing your belongings. There weren't any shared common areas either (TV room, kitchen etc. For guests to use). Spent 1 night there and couldn't bear to do another, so I checked out and couldn't even get a partial refund on the 5 other nights I was supposed to stay. TLDR; DO NOT STAY HERE!
This place is way too expensive for what it is. We had a twin room with private ‘bathroom’. The room was tiny and windowless - unless you count the little window towards the corridor that allows everyone who passes to look in. The bunk bed was shaky and uncomfortable. The bathroom doesn’t have a door, there is only a curtain (not unusual on Hawaii, but in this tiny room it was unpleasant). At least, the bathroom had a little window. But there was a nasty smell coming in from the dumpster outside in the parking lot. Closing it was not an option, since it was very hot and there was neither airconditioning nor a fan. We never got to see any staff, it’s self-check in and out.
