We just got back from another amazing stay at Kolea. We went a week before our kids came and stayed in a 2 bedroom the first week and a 3 bedroom the second week. I'll start with the 2 bedroom, 9M, first. It was very comfortably furnished. Had comfortable beds and was very spacious. We ate in most of the nights since it was just the two of us and the kitchen was well stocked and the grill on the porch was very nice. One thing I would like to note is that for a two bedroom 9M had to have had about the best view you can get at Kolea. I would highly recommend this unit to couples or anyone traveling with a few kids. Moving on to the 3 bedroom. When I called Waikoloa Vacation Rentals I asked them what was the best 3 bedroom they had available because we wanted to make this trip special. They pointed us to 12F. After staying there I can believe that it is one of the best units, if not the best. It had an amazing view of the beach and ocean and was close to the pool. The unit was well furnished and I would like to note that the lanai was very nicely furnished and we spent most of our time out there. I would highly recommend this to anyone that it is in their budget. Moving on to the management company, Waikoloa Vacation Rentals. They were great. Anyone that rents units from them gets access to the Hilton Waikoloa, which was great when the family was there. For a vacation rental company they offered the best service I have ever experienced. They check in with you the day after you arrive to see if you need anything. They helped us move units and made sure that we could move directly from one to the other since check out time was in the morning and check in was later in the day. Can't say enough about them or Kolea.............
ERRIBLE MANAGEMENT OF THE KOLEA PROPERTY RESULTS IN NO BEACH ACCESS, POOL CLOSED, ROAD TAR MACHINE UNDER OUR CONDO & MORE. We stayed for two weeks. Much of the time, the Kolea beach club was closed. No pool, no jacuzzi, NO DIRECT BEACH ACCESS. We had to walk to the Marriott, leaving the Kolea property to get to the beach right behind it and having to co-mingle with the crowds at the Marriott on the way. The beach club gates were cable-locked shut. They don’t allow you to pass through to the beach. They parked a road sealing 3500 gallon tank with a motor under our balcony the last day, which runs every morning for a half hour to warm it up. THERE IS NO ACCOUNTABILITY! I called the HOA, the property management company, the condo rental company, and I spoke first-hand with the gentlemen (I believe his name is Carl) that runs the property. Nobody really lives at Kolea - they're all rental units. With owners absent and rental agencies only interested in filling those units for profit, NOBODY REALLY CARES. You may show up and find yourself without some of the luxuries you paid for and no beach access! KOLEA UNIT 9M - DO NOT BOOK. $575 a nite, filthy and never updated. Great view, the rest was horrible. Please see pictures posted on my profile. This was booked through Waikoloa Vacation Rentals. Avoid them! Like all rental agencies, the front end seems great and the reality is quite different. Better to book units directly from owners on Airbnb or VRBO. Owners care more.
Waikoloa is very nice and Kolea as a development has some nice amenities (such as the proximity to A Bay), but unfortunately I can’t provide a positive review to this home due to a major insect problem. The property manager was responsive and attempted to resolve the issue (sent out an exterminator on more than one occasion) – but it was never completely solved. The mosquitoes are very, very bad at this home and make the patio almost unusable. After the first day, my family was covered with bites. We eventually noticed that other ground floor tenants in our building did not utilize their patios – so perhaps the problem is not this particular unit but the building or area in general. I have stayed at other Waikoloa properties and never noticed any mosquitoes. But at Kolea 7D, it’s a constant. You can load up with deet, but that’s only a short term solution. If you rent this unit (or maybe on the ground floor in Kolea), you should avoid the patio as much as possible and keep the sliding doors closed. We also had to deal with a centipede attack a whole mess of cockroaches. There were some smaller issues, such as the air conditioning (worked well in master bedroom and living room/kitchen, not so well in other bedrooms) and hot water (not working in master shower) – but these were only minor inconveniences. The main thing is the insects. When we moved into the unit, we cleaned up several dead insects that were in hard to clean spaces (corners, behind furniture, etc.). But the live ones kept coming. Ultimately, my spouse became disgusted by the cockroaches and we moved out five days earlier than scheduled.
This is the only condo complex on the entire island with beach access, so it's special right away. It's so nice not to have to get into the car to visit the beach. Unite 13D is 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and is on the ground floor, opening up to a huge, green grass area. Perfect for kids to run around while parents enjoy a mai tai on the large lanai. The lanai felt very private, so we were very comfortable hanging out there, and we loved the huge, built-in bbq. Cooking a few meals at home saved us a ton of money and was fun to just be able to enjoy sunsets from home. The unit was a 2-minute walk to the pool area, so really close without any noise. The pool area has a kiddie pool with a sandy "beach" and a nice, large pool, plus a hot tub, outdoor showers, seating areas, and a gym. 13D allowed us to use their garage, which was nice to keep our car cool. The unit gave us access to its closet full of boogie boards, snorkel gear, beach chairs/umbrellas, coolers, etc. It was so nice to not have to buy or rent any of that gear! The unit was very clean and had beautiful, Tommy Bahama furniture. The kitchen was very well equipped and had everything we needed. The onsite management was excellent. We would return here in a heartbeat and are already planning our return trip.
This is our second time coming here as a family (2 adults 2 kids) and we enjoyed it just as much as he first. The rooms are very comfortable and large with good cooking equipment and space. It has aircon which is much needed in the heat! The pool + spa is lovely and we spent majority of our time here. We took a day trip to Waipio Valley lookout which had a wonderful view although quite a long drive. Snorkel trip to Kealakekua was amazing, the visibility was so clear and so many fish to look at - definitely recommend. Makaiwa Bay is only a short drive and is lovely - and can access through fishponds and short walk through lava fields which is interesting but can be very hot.
We stayed in Unit 11C at Kolea and it was great! It’s a 2BR-2BA unit with lots of space. The beds are great, the rooms are big, as are the bathrooms. The kitchen is well-equipped. We have stayed at other VRBOs where the owners don’t really update kitchen equipment and that’s off-putting. This place was AWESOME. The Lanai has a great view of A-Bay beach. Also the owners have lots of board games, which our family used some of during our stay. We didn’t use the TV much but it looks like they have it set up for easy use. They provide beach chairs and towels, which were very handy! The unit was very clean and it is very well-furnished. The location is great because you can easily get to the Kings’ Mall and the Queens’ Marketplace if you want to do some shopping, buy groceries, or go to the movies. The movie theater has dining, which seemed like a good option. The Island Gourmet store has groceries and prepared foods, which was handy for us. We ate at the Daylight Mind Coffee restaurant and really enjoyed the food and service there. The Hilton is also close by if you want to eat out. The beach on the property is very nice and calm. If you have young kids, it’s great. Also, if you walk past Lava-Lava Beach Club, you are most likely to see turtles sunning themselves on the sand or rocks. The hot tub is nice and big at the club. The one drawback is that the pool is very small at this resort.
This was my first stay at Kolea. We were in unit 6D: 3bdrm/3 bath ground floor unit directly across from an open lot. We had gorgeous view of A-Bay, and were only a minute from the pool. There were 8 of us in the unit (4 adults, 4 teens (3 girls/1 boy). The 3 girls shared a room with twin beds and a trundle. The teen boy had a very nice foldaway bed in the living room. We managed a full week without tripping over each other! Pros: beach access. Cannot stress that enough. Being able to walk straight to the beach and use the beach chairs already provided was huge. Easy for snorkeling and SUP'ing. The overall condo was amazing, as expected. Beds were super comfortable. Top of the line furnishings, kitchen w/wine fridge, plenty of towels for both bathing and beach. Ceiling fans were great. We used the outdoor kitchen, and sat on the lanai daily for breakfast and pre-dinner drinks. Ice machine in fridge was able to keep up with all of us so that was a plus. Great selection of dvds and books. Garage had excellent amount of beach chairs, a wagon, beach toys, and coolers. Your condo is the entire floor; upper floors have elevators directly to their unit! Very secure complex with the locked gate. Even to walk out of the complex, you had to use a security code. The pool required a keycard. No resort fee. Some of the units have access to the Hilton pools; ours did not. Cons: Overall, I felt the condo complex was crammed in there; however, I've been told that if you're up on the 2nd or 3rd floors, that feeling is gone! The pool is lovely but very small and geared towards small kids. It's 3ft deep - the entire pool. Our particular unit needed better A/C; thermostat said it was 72 at all times, no matter what. It was definitely not 72! (Note: we never called the property mgr so there may have been some switch we couldn't figure out; we were just too busy all day!) Also, hooks. There were not enough towel hooks for 8 people for regular bath towels. They need a drying rack for the beach towels/swim suits, maybe in the garage. Overall I would stay again. We had a great time!
We had an incredible time vacationing in Kolea 14D. The unit was very clean and well maintained. We love to cook and it had everything my husband and I needed. We loved the location of this unit as you could walk right out on the grass and it served as a great play area for our kids-it was like having our own private yard! The owner was extremely helpful and responsive. He provided us with lots of tips on what to do on the island-it was extremely helpful! The condo was nicely furnished and very quiet. We loved the Kolea beach club as well it was a great place to relax and hang out and from the beach club you could walk right down to the beach. We highly recommend this condo and plan to book it again next year. It was a 5 star experience! We can't wait to come back!
Starting with the good: Kolea is attractive, clean, and features an outstanding location just steps from the A-Bay Beach. Our rental unit was clean, and the one issue (A/C on the blink) was addressed by local manager within a half hour - incredibly impressive. The unit had nice appliances and furniture, and was lovely. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a stay here for anyone seeking a peaceful and/or quiet vacation. I will list what we saw below, in order to filter out as much opinion as I can. - Neighbors children sent through a privacy hedge to play adjacent to ground-floor lanai. The hedges are clearly there to maintain privacy; two of our three days there, these kids were running and yelling past our patio. - Pool area was also dominated by families. Families where there was a lot of raising of voices with children. Pool is small; we did not feel able to simply "soak and enjoy." - So, went to beach. While standing in water, saw a woman whom I recognized as a Kolea renter (from our building) drag a beach chair across my things on my towel. When I asked her why she thought was ok, she responded "I thought you were swimming." I also asked if she would like if someone did that to her things, and she said "No, I wouldn't. I'm sorry." - Not ten minutes later, we saw the operator of the glass bottom boat tour unleash a stream of "F#ckin' Haole!" epithets as someone backed out of the tour at the last minute. Perhaps his "Aloha" shirt was canny irony. - Upstairs neighbors running the laundry at 3:30 a.m. This is audible in the unit below. I'm fairly well traveled, and usually take things as they are presented. I've slept on glaciers, in hostels where the 'bed' was a door set across two sawhorses; at the Metropole in Moscow. I actually LIKE roosters crowing in agricultural communities. This was different - consistently pushy, poor behavior on the part of others at the property. My level of offense will of course differ from anyone else's, and I concur that Kolea has much to offer (nice units, good location). But I do think it is fair to warn potential renters that one thing it does NOT offer is reliable peace and quiet (other reviews also mention noise). If you are a family, this is likely ideal. If you are looking for romance, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
Kolea 13D is a pure gem! A fantastic vacation spot for families or couples. Just returned from eight wonderful nights enjoying the condo and everything that the Kolea area has to offer. The owners are meticulous - excellent decor and very clean! The spacious 3 bedrooms, 3 baths and living areas are all gorgeous, nicely appointed, air conditioned and super comfy -- perfect for our vacation with extended family, ages from 19-80 years! This bottom floor unit has a lush grassy area extending out from the lanai, which is great extra space for kids play, tossing a frisbee or lounging. The rich dark wood with Tommy Bahama furniture throughout and the lanai pocket doors opening up one full wall, creates a tropical paradise! 🌴 The kitchen was perfectly stocked for cooking and the outdoor BBQ is a plus for grilling fresh fish. Nice dining areas both inside and on the lanai - a lovely spot for morning coffee or evening cocktails! Plenty of towels for bath and beach, along with beach chairs and water gear to borrow -- boogie boards, snorkeling and more! Lots of shopping and restaurants within a walk or short drive distance. From the beautiful, clean condo -- to the beach club with infinity pool overlooking the beach, lots of loungers and sand bottom kids pool -- to the beach access for swimming and gorgeous sunsets -- you have everything you need right there. And if you want to venture further the other nicest coastal spots on the island are just a short drive. We would highly recommend this wonderful condo. The management was responsive and helpful -- from weeks before we arrived until our departure. We had perfect instructions for everything in the unit and didn't run out of anything! Can't wait to return! 😎
