This stay is not a Hilton or Marriot. The surroundings are beautiful and neatly maintained, breakfast included daily and can be improved. This property is in the middle of the island a few miles from beaches and Esperanza town. Book your own transportation before arriving on the island or use taxis to get around. Bring your toiletries and there is no TV and no Wifi. We were not allowed to take anything to eat or drink to the room. This was kind of awkward since the rooms had nice balconies. We had to consume anything brought in the common dining areas and leave any drinks there in the fridge were everyone had access. This was a NO LIKE. We rented two rooms since we stayed with our daughter and son in law. Upon arriving the first night we nicely mentioned that our air conditioned in our room was not working properly it felt very hot. There were other rooms available and we were not offered to relocated. The owner had a surprise face when we mentioned only to say that the air conditioner was "fairly new". But nothing was not done to make our stay more pleasant. The employee (Gary) mentioned that they knew that it was supposed to be revised since the drainage was clogged The second morning the floor was all wet since the air condition was leaking inside the room. When I stood up being the floor wet I slipped, luckily falling in the bed. Another thing that we felt uncomfortable with was that whoever did the room went thru all our stuff. All our stuff was moved and "organized their way". By this I mean that they even went and folded all our under wear and this felt really weird and uncomfortable. This happened to of both rooms rented. Over the years we have stayed in lots of hotels and inns and the personal stuff Never has been gone thru or relocated. We feel the pool needs maintenance, the test that are to made to the water should be done properly. THE OVERALL ALL EXPERIENCE WAS FAIR.
Words cannot express how beautiful The Great Escape is. The property itself, which is maintained by the nicest man (Gary), is stunning. It includes a beautiful in-ground pool, banana and papaya trees, a swing, hammock, garden and wonderful flowers. The pool is open all hours which is also a perk. A fridge is stocked with water, soda, etc and is great for left-overs. Breakfast every morning from 8-10 with fruit, freshly made scrambled eggs, cereal, coffee, and orange juice. Breakfast was definitely a highlight! The rooms have a balcony with seating area. Ours (room 5) had a view of the pool, garden, and ocean in the distance. We cannot say enough about Dana and Gary, who helped us arrange for a moped rental and bioluminescent bay experience (definitely do the clear kayak)!! They made the stay memorable and we have already planned a return trip as this is the best place to stay on the island. 4 minutes to Esperanza via car, which is just enough distance to have a romantic and quiet evening while being close to the best beaches on the Caribbean side of the island (the best part of the island itself). Stay here and you will have the most romantic trip of your life!
My stay in Vieques was at Great Escape - a small inn or bed and breakfast. For those of us on a budget, clean rooms with private bath and nice views Lovely grounds and a pool. Breakfast included daily. This property is in the middle of the island just a few miles from beaches and Esperanza town. Book your own transportation before arriving on the island or use taxis to get around. Bring your toiletries and there is no TV and no Wifi
What an experience! Great Escape is such a gem on the enchanted Isle of Vieques. We stayed two nights and felt like we were in a secluded, romantic garden of eden. Dana is a gracious and unpretentious hostess. She ensures her guests are happy and will do whatever necessary to make you feel comfortable. Its a special place where life is wild and free. Gorgeous breezes, the intoxicating and heavenly aroma of flowers, the night sky and stars can't even be described, our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, breakfast was hearty and ready when we were. Especially loved the bananas and fresh coconut! the pool was so warm and refreshing after a day at the beach. It was so cool to come back at night to see the trees lit up across the property. Dana has all the beach supplies ypu could ever need, beach hats, snorkel, chairs. Thanks for making us feel like family, Dana! Hope to see you again soon :-) Ann Marie & Craig
I really liked it but as most things in Vieques it is not your "Hilton" style hotel. The rooms don't have TV or WIFI but it is really THE great escape We relaxed and enjoyed the picturesque atmosphere. The owner (manager) is super friendly. The bedroom was very clean and they do a great job making you feel at home. In Vieques you need to rent a car or scooter otherwise you can't see too much and the location of this place requires a form of locomotion. I do recommend specially for couples.
Dona, the hostess runs a tight ship. The place is well appointed and maintained. It is cleaner and nicer than you might expect in this part of the world. Dona and her staff are delightful, friendly and very helpful. Great Escape is designed for relaxation. A poolside Casita provides a common area for breakfast, or enjoying an evening libation. It is short drive from Esperanza, the tourist center of Vieques. Trade winds provide a near constant breeze, and the garden setting is delightful. We will surely stay at Great Escape again whenever Vieques is on our itinerary.
The staff was very amenable and the facilities were very clean. The room surpassed my expectations! Would be convenient to have a car, but if you don't, Donna can drive you most places for a small fee.
This is an eco-friendly bed and breakfast. Part of being eco-friendly is conserving energy which explains the reasoning behind their request to shut off the a/c as you leave your room. I have noticed complaints about this, and others blaming Dana for their own mistakes when booking which I think is unfair. That being said, I found Great Escape to be the perfect place to totally immerse yourself in the environment of the island, set back in the hills away from the bustle of town, the only noise heard being the sounds of nature. There is lush vegetation surrounding the property, beautifully manicured by Gary, the groundskeeper. (Gary actually recommended one of the best meals I had on the island. It was a small restaurant off the beaten path called Tito Bloque which had a very authentic feel and the food was superb. Thanks, Gary!) There was no wifi or tv in the room, which were not missed. There was good enough cellphone reception from the room to research destinations and the gps from my cellphone worked fine to navigate trips. There is a fridge near the pool kept stocked with a trust system in place that you tally off and pay when you leave, which was very convenient. The pool looked nice and clean but I didn't get a chance to use it. The room was very clean, decorated with intricate tile work and kitschy items. The picture of the Empire State Building in our room was found to be extremely ironic for New Yorkers arriving at a place called Great Escape; this offered a good laugh. The one complaint my SO had was that she didn't have a surface to put down her stuff in the bathroom...not really a big deal. Would definitely recommend Great Escape and plan to visit again!
This woman made a mistake and did not properly take our reservation. She did not take ownership for her mistake and charged us even though were not able to go, due to her mistake. I feel robbed of my vacation and my bank account. I would avoid this place at all costs, as this is not an honest person.
I booked a room with Great Escape & then read review that you need car when you are there. Literally, 30 minutes later, I talked with my husband and he said we don't want a car, & to cancel. I tried through Booking.com and their customer service representative said that she was sorry. She tried to get Dana/Donna the owner to not charge me $75.00. The owner told Booking.com "Read the policy." And then Dana/Donna HUNG UP ON Booking.com. I also called the owner and pleaded with her to please waive the $75 charge due to my error. She absolutely REFUSED & told me to "Deal with it." She was totally unwilling to work with me at all. I'll eat the $75 but I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND GREAT ESCAPE. Complete shayters!
