Hotel San Gallo3.0 out of 5.0

This is an older hotel and the room was very small, but the service was excellent and the breakfast satisfying. The gentlemen behind the desk were very friendly and helpful. If you arrive early you can store your bags there and walk around San Marco unimpeded.
We stayed at the San Gallo for 3 nights and found it to be a great no-frills hotel to be based at, to get to St Marks and Rialto, etc., as well as public transport. Good value for money spent. Luckily we had read previous reviews on trip advisor, so we found the hotel entrance fairly easily. Reception is on the first floor, 26 steps and no lift. We were welcomed at reception and given all the information we would wish for, for our short stay. Thank you Guido (sorry if I got the name wrong). We had a couple of minor requests with our room and they were attended to immediately and with no fuss. Our room was compact and comfortable, and the bathroom well laid out and clean. The room (No 7) was fine for our short stay in November, but I would definitely not have been happy with it, if our stay was in summer and for a longer period, as it lacked natural sunlight. I think we would call the decor "typically antique venetian". We knew there were no tea making facilities in the room, so took our trusty travel kettle with us. Breakfast was held in the reception area and was basic continental. The freshly baked croissants were a particular favorite. Hotel wifi was pretty good. We found the staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful. We could not fault them at all. Well done guys. NOTE. Oh and don't forget to allow for payment of tourist tax on departure from the hotel. Ours was 3.50 euros per person per night.
Very cosy hotel next to San Marco square. The room pretty antique but well cared and clean. Best of all was the very helpful and kind personal at the reception. Highly recommended. Close to the center. Affordable price. Higher boots recommended water goes up in Venice!
If you want a clean hotel with a fantastic location then the San Gallo is great. The location couldn't be any better. A 5 minute walk from the water taxi, 2/3 mins from St Marks Square. The hotel is on a courtyard and just has a locked door, no hotel front and you have to walk up steps to get to the hotel entrance. It has a small little lobby and the hotel decor has a very Venetian feel. Our room was nice and clean but the window overlooked the wall of a building opposite, probably within touching reach! Although this didn't bother us as we were only there to sleep. All the staff were pleasant and friendly and helped us with an opera booking. There are of course nicer and fancier hotels in Venice but then you will pay more money!!!! So here you get what you pay for. The only problem we had was very noisy pigeons outside our window, early in the morning, this isn't the hotels fault though. We would stay again!
This hotel has an excellent location! Less than a 5 minute walk to Piazza San Marco. The staff strives to provide excellent service. The guest rooms are in need of a significant upgrade. Cleanliness of the guest rooms is very good. The breakfast is good. If a very date decor doesn't concern you and you like a great location at a very fair price then this hotel is for you. If you need a very up to date boutique hotel you should look elsewhere.
This hotel, easy to find with a door directly next to the Teatro San Gallo, sits a few steps from St Mark's Square, restaurants, Hard Rock Cafe, and gondolas. The hotel starts on the second floor, but the walk up the staircase feels more like two floors. The staff were very helpful and friendly, grabbing our bags to help carry them up. Although not big, the rooms are comfortable. They have that lovely but rundown look one expects in Venice, such as when I opened the large window in our room to look out (no view, like the end of an alley), the window fell out...the latch was what was holding it in place. Breakfast was very nice, albeit somehow the brioche was always burnt. (I will say, however, if you are complaining about burnt brioche, you have a pretty good life) There is a deck on the roof, where breakfast is served during nice weather. Not much of a view there either. During our stay we ate breakfast in the lobby. Really the only issue we had was the long staircase, which was a challenge for us ascend and descend, so we usually went out once and returned once daily. That said, tghe proximity to St Mark's Square, the staff, and comfort of the hotel itself makes for an excellent place to stay in Venice!
The sign is visibly hanging off the front of hotel, but the entrance is not clear. Our room was on the lower floor, which is in a separate building than the check in desk. Our room was very small. The queen size bed was too big, and my wife ended up crawling over the bed to get to the bathroom. The WiFi was not good, and there generally wasn't good reception in Venice. Cell towers are not the fault of the hotel, but the lack of reliable WiFi to check on what sights we want to see or restaurant we want to go is. The mattress was hard, and divoted, with only 1 pillow each and no back ups in the closet. AC worked. Great proximity to Piazza San Marco. Accessible from train station by water taxi - go to S. Marco Vallaresso or Giardinetti. Room seemed ancient, but was clean. Would not stay here again.
Tucked away down a narrow alley, and located on the first floor, but easy to find as it is very close to St. Marks Square. Staff are helpful, and will provide a map, free of charge, for anyone that wants a little more information, with areas circled to clarify what to find where in this fantastic island city. The room was great, with fabric lined walls, and facilities were not bad. Breakfast was good, and check in/ out was easy, and we were able to leave our bags all day before our next journey.
We spent two nights in a classic double room. Our price was reasonable for the location but the room was small, dated and a little shabby. WiFi was free but rarely worked. Breakfast was subpar. The front desk people were helpful, however. If I return to Venice I would spend more money and stay elsewhere.
Lovely little hotel just a step away from San Marco but in its own quiet square. Room was small but the Venetian ambience was great, and you only need to be there to sleep anyway. Easy walk to Rialto and other sights.
