We booked in here as couldn’t get into the blue swallow, and have to say found this motel excellent, was clean and tidy room and bed was nice and comfy. The owner was friendly and welcoming took time to chat to us. Definitely would stay here again
I do not often write reviews, the Safari made me want to start. I stayed in a large spotless room with a comfortable King sized bed. The staff was friendly and helpful. I think this hotel should be higher rated than it is. I reccomend to anyone.
Such a great place to stay! Fun memorabilia decorating the Rockabilly suite. Adorable retro table. Spacious and very clean. Friendly and helpful owner. ‘‘Twas a treat to stay there and we plan to return. Highly recommend!
On a lengthy road trip, we decided to spend the night in Tucumcari, and decided to check into historic Route 66. I’m really glad that we did, because staying at the Safari was an experience that was quite memorable and pleasant. Most importantly, the beds are super comfortable. Our room had a remote control for the air conditioner, and it’s always nice to be able to pull your car right up to door. No luggage racks needed! The fire pit area was really cool with a bunch of vintage advertisements painted on the walls. Too bad it was raining during our stay. There is a lack of amenities, including fridge, microwave, breakfast. I’m fine with that, because we would have missed out on the awesome breakfast at Kix on 66 down the road. As far as the other amenities go, I personally feel that the pros outweigh the cons. Your mileage might vary. Remember: if you’re paying more for amenities that you’re not using, you’re wasting your money. And speaking of which, this was one of the less expensive places we stayed at during our trip, and we had a better experience than almost everywhere else. Route 66 has been on a decline for many years now, and even though there’s been a resurgence in interest, this type of thing could very well die off if more people don’t give it a try. So I recommend that you give it a try.
The Motel Safari is a terrific retro accommodation that gives you an authentic 50s/60s vibe without sacrifice. It’s spotlessly clean with a fun retro look and feel. (I stayed in the “Wanda Jackson Suite”) The motel has low rates, a friendly staff and WiFi worked perfectly. It’s also very close to Del’s, the best dinner in Tucumcari. This place is truly a winner! I come through Tucumcari 6-8 times a year and I’ve been staying at hotels on the Interstate because, I don’t know, maybe it was just because I thought I knew what to expect and I could book online. Motel Safari is really nice AND I booked on-line. From now on I’ll be staying at the Motel Safari!
Of all the so-called "iconic motels" in Tucucumari, I would certainly pick Safari as " #1" over Blue Swallow. It may not have the history of Blue Swallow, but Safari is certainly is more attractive than Blue Swallow. Maybe a bit of being in a " motel generation" later than Blue Swallow, but Safari is typical of the best of that era while Blue Swallow was already hopelessly out-dated when Safari first opened for business. But also, in the sense of " caveat emptor" you can stay in either a place for its nostalgia or its historic ingerest or you can pay about the same price or maybe just a little more for an up-to-date , new , comfortable motel , with more features and amenities if you are stopping overnight or longer in Tucumcari. I am just basing my opinions on my trips through Tucumcari since the late 1960's. Tucumcari has certainly been going down-hill since then. Blue Swallow and others seem to be charging their prices based on their " Glory Days " when they were the only places available in their time. But times have changed. You can " pick and choose " nowadays " . 😁
We were on the road and decided to roll the dice on finding a place to stay. As luck would have it the Safari had a room. The owner was delightful. He waited past his 10pm check in for us since we ran into weather. The room was a perfect balance of classic mid century modern with today’s modern conveniences. It is the best sleep my husband and I have had in over a week. The bed was very comfortable. The room was just delightful. We can’t wait to come back. The motel is the CLASSIC Route 66 experience!
I am an older woman (70'ish) that was driving home to AZ from KS alone so safety was important. I wanted a small motel that I could drive up to and go directly into my room. I was looking for an AARP or AAA discount. i called the Safari from Amarillo and spoke with the owner and reserved a room. He was very helpful and said he could give me a Senior discount. I arrived several hours later at 3:30 p.m. and found a retro 60's room off of I-40 on part of old Route 66. The room was clean with a radio playing 60's music. The towels were new and fluffy. Ice was available in the office. There was a relaxing sitting area with a fire pit out front but since it was in the low 100's I did not go out there. Del's is a very good restaurant and only four or five blocks away. My room was across from the office and in view so I felt safe there. i would not hesitate to stay there again as it was a fun place and priced well.
Room is clean renovated historical space with cool a/c! Nice to walk at sundown and enjoy Route 66 memorabilia! STAY AT THIS PLACE! Nice large parking lot with original front office with great friendly host that is helpful!
We highly recommend this motel. It was very comfortable and loved the history of an old Route 66 motel. The owner was extremely helpful, sharing lots of information about our room, the city and places to eat or visit!! We absolutely loved staying there!!
