Best Western Royal George Hotel3.0 out of 5.0

This was our second visit to the Wye Valley and the Royal George. The hotel is beautifully situated opposite Tintern Abbey. More motel than hotel...the rooms are adequate with a huge bed! The bathrooms are a bit old-fashioned but I liked the deep bath and hot water...however I felt the towels were a bit disappointing...very small! Breakfast is a mixture...help yourself fruit and cereals...not overly interesting...but freshly cooked hot food to order...much nicer than food kept warm in a buffet!
I mistakenly booked the hotel on the incorrect date. I arrived at the hotel on the date I thought it was booked for and was informed it was the wrong date and was told 'we won't give you a refund either because it's non-refundable'. I did try and negotiate re-booking to an alternative date because the company I work for uses this hotel as one of their pref hotels. I was told no! I asked to speak to the hotel owner and was told no, they are away. I have phoned every day, twice a day for the last six days and I'm being told that someone will call me back. I haven't received a call and quite frankly I find their attitude towards a genuine mistake very unprofessional and their lack of response rude. If I had booked the hotel and then simply decided not to go then I would understand their policy, but this was a genuine mistake. DO NOT book into this hotel - their customer satisfaction philosophy is poor.
We spent a pleasant five days here. The staff were wonderful, friendly, helpful and happy. The old building is lovely, quant and cosy. The bedrooms, however, are in a 'motel' style block that are a relic from the sixties and could do with a serious overhall. That said, the bedrooms are comfortable and clean. The restaurant food is more akin to very average pub-grub... the basics are ok, but anything elaborate will probably disappoint. The cooked breakfast is good, though the timing of the eggs is hit and miss, but the continental breakfast is disappointingly basic. All in all, a lovely hotel with wonderful staff, but in need of a refurb and (dare I say) a new chef.
We stayed here last weekend on the basis of it being a Best Western and dog friendly. Staff friendly and breakfast good. the location was excellent and there was a dog friendly pub nearby. HOWEVER, the rooms were motel rather than hotel. This should have been made clear at time of booking. The room had a dirty towel behind the door, rings from toiletry containers on the shelf beside the bath, and a small packet of biscuits which had already been opened. Very tired looking. The actual hotel lounge was wonderful, but of course you couldn't take the dog!
This was an organised event for 60+ people, the service and food was first class and the accommodation the same. Nothing was too much trouble for the Owner and staff, highly recommended. The rooms wre well furnished with extra large beds and tv.
Firstly, don't be put off by what may be deemed as a dated interior! If you delve a little deeper, this hotel has a lot to offer. We stayed in room 25.It had the biggest, possibility most comfortable bed Ive ever slept in!There was plently of tea/coffee/hot chocolate & milk.I also liked the sachets of soup too.We left the front door open,& moved a chair over to our front door & settled down with a cuppa and free newspaper. The gardens are very pretty and you can hear the flow of the nearby stream. The rooms are exceptionally clean 10/10-absolutely flawless.Thick fluffy towels, crisp bed linen are all immaculate. The lounge area does look 'oldly worldly' but has a lovely charm.High backed armchairs or sofas with squishy cushions, overlooking the garden. The bar was well stocked & reasonably priced, with a lovely friendly gentleman serving. The evening menu was extensive and absolutely delicious(farmhouse grill highly recommended!).Ruth was our waitress & was friendly, happy and bubbly. In the morning I woke to bird song and the sound of the stream, before heading off for breakfast.Again, this didn't disappoint. The menu was yet again extensive. Two young waitresses served us,& nothing was too much trouble.Rounds of toast, followed by big hot pots of tea/coffee quickly arrived.A full cooked breakfast was cooked perfectly-and was boiling hot(not sat under a hot plate for a few hours!!).The receptionist(possibly owner/manager!)was extremely friendly & was happy to chat upon arrival. You get the impression that staff are happy to work here, which sets the scene straight away.I wouldn't hesitate to book this hotel again,if I was in the area.
Stayed overnight on route to friends in Aberdovey wanted to see Tintern Abbey hotel was clean staff were very friendly only had breakfast but was a very good start and for price of room was absolute bargain
I recently attended a reunion with some old Army friends at this hotel. The hotel is comfortable, and very close to the Abbey. The catering and service were excellent and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly
A very friendly, family run Hotel presenting professional standards and service through out our stay. Our room was clean and spacious with the biggest "double" bed I have ever slept in! Evening meal ordered in the lounge bar meant a relaxing drink before being taken to your table in the quaint Cottage Restaurant. Food was delicious, well presented and served as soon as we were seated. This also applied to breakfast, again food and service was outstanding. This hotel is by far the BEST Best Western I have stayed at!
Due to a change in circumstances I had to cancel a one night booking at this place. Alas despite giving them a months notice they insisted on payment in full! Potential 'Guests' beware! Sinking to their level I suppose I should have held the booking and not turned up!
