Alfreds Compound Main + Guest House in Town Hot Tub Wifi
Town - 1.5 miles to Taos Plaza and 18 miles to Taos Ski Valley
The longtime home of the late Taos icon Alfred Hobbs, Alfred's house in Canon boasts a rich and dynamic history dating from the 1700's as the millsite and miller's house on the Rio Fernando de Taos. Alfred Hobb's life is the subject of the documentary film "Driven" and his days as an archeologist and member of a Taos hippie commune have been chronicled. Alfred's unique woodwork is exhibited thoughout the house and casita.
The original adobe has evolved organically through several distinct eras, the house and casita have recently been remodeled. The compound consists of a house and a casita. These can be rented separately or together. The house has four gas burning Kiva fireplaces designed and built by Taos Pueblo War Chief Benito Sandoval in the living room and bedrooms. The casita has a traditional wood-burning kiva fireplace. The house has radiant floor heating, a modern kitchen and features original artwork by family artists Bill, Mary and Rachel Barminski. The casita / cabin also has a furnished full kitchen. There is a detached 2-car garage with storage space for activity gear. Authentic blend of tradition and comfort this unique vacation find is located a mile and a half (15 minute walk) from the Taos Plaza, Alfred's House is one block off Kit Carson Road.
Alfred's outdoors amenities include an enclosed fenced yard, a provate hot tub, gas grill, picnic table, shade trees, a large covered traditonal front portale and a smaller covered patio in the back yard.
A "State of the Art" Queen Sleeper sofa will be found in the den / bedroom located off the living room. This upscale sleeper is made by American Leather (easy to find on line) which is a highly touted sofa manufacturer. These sofas get rave reviews with the majority of folks saying they are "more comfortable than any bed" and/or "best night sleep I've had in years". Try it. You will go home telling everyone about this new sleeper invention.
The vacation home features a kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and a patio, and there's space to spread out with 4 bedrooms. Other standard amenities include a washing machine and a fireplace.

Spent 5 nights in this wonderful property. Very comfortable for 6 adults and 1 toddler. Close to town without being right in the center of the chaos around the town square. The casita needed some cleaning when we arrived, minor but was overlooked. Management took care of it immediately.

What a find!
We've rented many houses in our years of travels, but we've never felt so comfortable and well stocked! Not only was this an immaculate and artful adobe home with charm galore, but it had every little thing that a short term visitor might need and organized and labeled...making it simple to feel at home. Lots of sleeping options, and our family of 7 was very comfortable here! Thank you!

Reviewer Comments:
This place kept getting better the more we explored. The main house is very nicely designed, comfortable and tons of space in the kitchen and living room for leisurely cooking, meals and passing time. The casita is off the charts--tons of history, comfortable, cozy and provides a bit more quiet. The compound itself is huge with great tables for outdoor dining, a terrific hot tub, and a fire pit! We were there with three families and the kids had a great time. We are talking about another trip soon!

Great Girl's Get-A-Way
What a great place for a girl's get a way! We felt at home immediately and throughly enjoyed our week with the spacious kitchen and living area for gathering to share meals and spend time together. Inside and out there were wonderful, cozy, spaces to relax and find your own space wether it's for yoga, reading, or painting. The hot tub was great for unwinding and loosening up after spending the day taking in the sites, shopping, hiking in the mountains or biking around town. We treated ourselves to a spa day at the El Monte Hotel & Resort - a true five star experience - just down the road a few minutes from the house. The proximity to town is ideal wether you want to cook in or eat out (Sid's Market for gourmet groceries and The Love Apple for bday dinner some of our favorites). It was inspiring and a great experience for our group of creative friends who hope to make staying at Alfred's house an annual trip! - Mary McGovern

Alfred's House - An Artful Blend
I really enjoyed the look and feel of Alfred's House. It was a skillful combination of 1700 Spanish colonial, a dash of 1960's hip with all the modern conveniences. The current owners managed to keep the best elements from the original house while blending in their own families art work and architectural design. All this creates a net effect of warmth and homeiness with enough spice to keep it interesting. Our group (6) found the house and cassita to be individually roomy and accomodating while allowing all to easily get together in the kitchen for meals and a few of the local craft beers. The Taos Mesa Brewery makes a great Scottish Ale. Really enjoyed the high pressure jets in the hot tub after skiing. Likewise the enclosed garage made loading out the ski gear easy and convenient. The house was beautifully maintained. With everything clean and working properly. The location worked out great with quick access to the Anaconda Bar (you can easily walk to it), the downtown Taos area, Michael's for breakfast and the Taos Mountain ski area. I would certainly recommend Alfred's House to friends and relatives. Looking forward to renting it again on my next ski trip to Taos.

Authentic Taos!
Alfred's House was the perfect place to be while we enjoyed our ski vacation in Taos. The home is inviting, comfortable and a place for all to enjoy a restful apres ski, complete with hot tub, two car garage and a super location. We were able to ski all of the area slopes with very little travel time--excellent location near the Plaza.
We will definitely return as often as possible.

great house
We had a great time and Alfred's house was better than the description. The attention to detail and quality of the furnishings is exquisite. There is no doubt that this is the real deal; an authentic southwestern adobe. The large portals were nice for hanging out while hottubbing and relaxing. The covered walkway from the garage to the house is very convenient. If you have a large group we recommend renting the casita as well. My in-laws stayed in there with their own kitchen and made it their own private retreat.

Great Taos Ski Vacation
Perfect place to stay if you want to ski daily at the surrounding ski lodges. The location is conveniently located a.5 miles from the Plaza which gives you the opportunity to head out early for the ski slopes in the area. The house is beautiful. Clean, modern, full of fine furniture and original art work. We particularly enjoyed the luxury of a two car garage with automatic door opener which made it easy to load and unload our ski gear daily. We definitely would recommend this home for anyone who wants to enjoy a Taos ski vacation in the comfort of a fabulous house. (I forgot to mention the hot tub for the after ski relaxation.)

Warm and inviting home with Taos character
I had the pleasure of staying a few days at ‘Alfred’s House’ and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I don’t know about this Alfred character but I can say that the present owners have gone above and beyond to make the home into a real first class vacation home. They have thought of everything!
This home is warm and inviting and in excellent condition. All of the rooms are beautifully furnished with cool art and nice furniture. The beds are the best ever - a real treat, guaranteed good sleeping! I need that bed at home! There’s plenty of room for everybody. The bedrooms are nice and private and one has its own patio. All the outdoor patio areas are wonderful. You really feel like you are in your own exclusive private compound. It is very peaceful and serene. Close enough to town for convenience, yet just the right distance away to have peace and privacy. A fabulous experience, very comfy and relaxing. Also, the giant garage was handy for storing and staging toys and cars – very convenient. Thank you and I can’t wait to book your wonderful Taos home again!

Overall just wonderful, and I would use the management company again, and would love to return to this property. Two small - ish concerns - There was a fruit tree outside of the casita. There was a lot of rotton fruit on the ground, and hundreds and hundreds of fruit flys in the house. Would be good to clean up fruit. Also, many spiders and webs in the house.
