Good location, but horrible service. They don't even bother to clean the room and make the bed for my second night stay. I'll never stay here again.
Very well located (close to - walking distance to most of them -: Confucius Temple, Koxinga Shrine, Taiwanese Literature Museum, Shing Kong Mitsukoshi, Our Lady Queen of China Cathedral), is an option to someone who doesn´t want to spend much. The staff is also very helpful. Nevertheless, you should not expect much of the hotel. Although clean, Japanese style rooms (in the familiar room, two very hard mattresses on the floor), grimy bathroom (sink, bathtub and floor) and curtains that don´t work after sunshine (terrible during the summer!). It worth only if you solely intend to spend one or two nights there. Nothing else.
Formerly known as Marshal Hotel, the hotel sits above a party place and the entrance is quite hard to find. The hotel is situated just 10-15 min walking distance from Taichung Railway Station (TRA) and a mass of bus companies can be found at the Gancheng Bus Station in between. You could grab a bus to Sun Moon Lake from the Nantou Bus company.
M friends & I booked into the hotel after reading some good reviews & due to our budget. Bad: Walls were thin & we could hear our neighbors laughter. Room was cramped with double-sized bed & our luggage. The one sleeping near the end will not have the space to get off the bed. Single window with little light. No wifi in room. Only the reception area had wifi. Breakfast not included. In the morning, only had McDonalds for breakfast as it is one of the few stores opened. Good: Staff were friendly & went all out to assist with taxi booking & places to visit. It was them who told us that there was a stall selling breakfast set some streets away one morning. Staff went an extra mile to warn our neighbour to keep the volume down. Overall the hotel is average and not for those who are looking for a luxurious stay. More for those on a budget. Visited in Jan 2011 when it was chilling cold.
Before we came, we did some research online and found pretty good review about this Good Ground Hotel. However we are terribly wrong about it and regretted that we have booked 2 nights here. The hotel is very old and required lots of renovation. We stayed at 5th floor with windows. The room is terrible even with the price about $65SGD paid per night. We are amazed there is no hot water for bath and the air-con is terrible warm. Have to called the reception to 'turn' for us. There are also no WIFI provided. Breakfast were ordered from the Mcdonald nearby. If you ask me about the hotel, this is not worth any single cent. Really. However around the hotel, there are quite a few very nice local street foods of Tainan.
Not many positives about this hotel except that the staff tried to be really helpful and that there were only 1 or 2 other guests. Negatives; - McDonalds breakfast unless you figure there is actually bread with spreads and coffee available (who wants to be forced into supporting McDonalds?!) - no window - wireless only in reception area - Tv not clear enough for digital (lines on screen) - not much eco-friendliness - i.e. NO soap and shampoo dispensers, bottled water in room when there is water dispenser downstairs. Same with kettle in room. Aircon was left on in room after being made up (for hours?). - very hard bed Other slight positives; At least fridge was not plugged in when not in use. Aircon was not being used in reception area - they kept doors open and used natural ventilation with fans.
Some reviews of this place were really positive, but I see no reason to justify that. The location is OK, you can walk to most stuff but it's not really close. The room was small bare and not all that clean, the bathroom was dirty, dim, and old, and I had no hot water in the morning. The "bed" is just two "mattresses" on the floor and not comfortable even by Chinese standards. The wall are paper thin and I could hear someone playing cards till 2 am. Also anytime anyone uses water anywhere in the hotel I could hear it. I stayed for two nights and that was two too many. I could overlook some of this but the price was as high as some really good hotels I stayed in in other Taiwanese cities.
There are no frills at the Good Ground. No jacuzzi, no restaurant, no gym, no spa and the breakfast is sourced from the local McDonalds. It has very limited charm or style and just delivers the basics very effectively. Its a simple budget hotel situated in the centre of town on a surprisingly quiet road. You can walk to most of the sights and there is fantastic street food just around the corner. The rooms are immaculately clean and comfortable with air-con and an en-suite bathroom. Free Wi-Fi in the lobby not in the rooms. The only special aspect is the front desk staff who will call you a taxi, offer advice or directions and speak good English for those whose Mandarin is a touch rusty. If you want cheap, clean and cheerful in a decent location, this is the place.
Staf friendly & helpful. 5 min taxi ride from the station. Couldn't check into room until 14.00, room was clean & large, no shower curtain though. Bit strange having to order a Macdonalds breakfast for delivery in the morning & couldn't have before 8am - so gave it a miss. Within 10min walk of confucious temple.
Good Ground Hotel is recommendable for bugdet travellers, as it's good value for your money and located in the centre. You can walk to most of the sights in the centre and there are a lot of shops and restaurants closeby. My room was nothing special, it was a bit old and had no window, but it was clean, relatively spacious and comfortable. There were the usual amenities like toiletries, kettle, mini bar and bottled water in the room, but there was no WiFi, only a LAN connection. Breakfast came from McDonalds, but the staff was really nice and super helpful. So overall I would recommend this hotel.
