Calamander Unawatuna Beach

This hotel is perfectly functional but feels like it is at a tipping point. The hotel is advertised as a 4 star hotel and i would say that it is currently scrabbling to maintain that status. The rooms are a little run down with air conditioning that is only just powerful enough to do the job, bed lining is not of the standard you would expect from a 4 star resort as are the room fixtures/fittings. The hotel Wifi is very intermittent and the Red tiling of the pool area is just a tad off-putting making it look like a pond! The website states it is the first vermillion coloured swimming pool in the world- that is probably because no one else wants one! The 2nd beachside pool is nice enough and the resort is clean and offers all the amenities you would expect to be provided. As mentioned on here previously the hotel is excellently located on the middle of Unawatuna beach and the staff are very helpful. It currently looks like there is some ongoing building work by the pool area- hopefully the owners are planning to invest in this resort because it is need of it but it wouldn't take much to establish it as an excellent resort. Overall a good place to stop by if travelling around Sri Lanka however i would be a tad disappointed if it was my sole holiday destination in Sri Lanka.

This was our last stop on our 16 day Sri Lanka trip, staff were very welcoming and when we arrived they told us we were being upgraded due to a event being held in their main restaurant that they thought might be too loud, this was a very pleasant surprise. Rooms were really nice and spacious, I was a bit skeptical about the red pool but we all loved it especially at night when it was lit up. Location is amazing with lots of restaurants on the beach and close by. The only constructive criticisms I have is for some reason there was not much hot water in the morning but being quite hot it actually didnt matter to me. Being our last stay we had 4 other hotels to compare it with and in regards to food it was a little disapointing, other than that we loved it and would definately stay again.

We stayed here for two nights in July (though we paid for three in order to use our rooms until we left for the airport at 7pm). I was thoroughly impressed with the hotel. The rooms were spacious and cool, with beautiful views of the ocean. Reception was able to accommodate changing one of our rooms from a family to a double and moving it next to our other rooms (though we were charged the original price). My only criticisms of the room are very minor: the fan in the bathroom isn't very efficient, so it gets very stuffy; the TV picture is a bit fuzzy; and the curtains have come off their eyelets a bit so they're hard to move. Staff were incredibly friendly, greeting you whenever you walked past. The pool was a perfect temperature, with plenty of lounges, and the location on the beach is just perfect. It's an easy walk to many restaurants if you don't want to eat at the hotel. We had breakfast here each morning and it was delicious, with plentiful options. I would particularly recommend the egg hoppers with sambol and curry, and the pancakes. The egg hoppers were a bit burnt on the bottom on the second day but still delicious. We also came for happy hour (5-7) each night and loved the cocktails - the chilli mojito is fantastic!! Having read more negative reviews of the restaurant for dinner, we only ate there once for a light meal before our flight home. We ordered from the a la carte menu, rather than the buffet, and I was really pleased with my chicken curry, with a number of vegetable curries on the side. The pumpkin curry in particular was delicious. The hotel also organised our airport transfer, which went off without a hitch. We had a wonderful stay in such a luxurious resort and I would've happily stayed longer!!!

Great visit to unawatuna! The hotel was a nice place to relax. Breakfast was included and the beach was beautiful! Nice pool and there was also a lap pool. There are many restaurants along the beach close by for variety. Rooms were clean and spacious and staff was very courteous.

location location location this hotel is right up on the unawatuna beach. we did a very late check in, front desk people very helpful. good sized rooms thou we did get a parking lot view room. fabulous breakfast

The location of the resort is amazing with it being right on the beach having 2 pools if it's own and clean rooms. The staff is also very helpful and take good care. U can hire tuk tuk or bikes and roam around the closeby places. The only disappointing thing was the breakfast spread which was exactly the same for us for 4 days with no change at all and nothing exciting to eat.

The location of the hotel is great, it has 2 nice pools and clean rooms. During our stay the 'bar' next to the pool on the beach was closed which gave the pool a bit of a deserted feeling. We had a pleasant stay but find it a bit expensive for what you get.

The location of this hotel was excellent, right on the beach with a variety of restaurants right along the beach and hotel. The room size was good with a balcony, however the drapes did not look clean and that was disappointing. The food in the restaurant was average, lots of better choices near by.

I stayed for one night at this hotel. Very good hotel. Spacious clean rooms and very polite staff. Restaurant is also good with many choices from the buffet. Hotel is on the beach. Many activities are available for the people staying at this hotel. Prices are also reasonable.

We were a group of 11 ladies who traveled to Sri Lanka for a fun-filled beach holiday and we can say that our expectations were indeed met. Staff were all attentive and always on hand to assist us with our requests. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the local tastes of Sri Lanka. The rooms are a little outdated however they are clean and neat and adequate. We spent most of our time at the pools and on the beach so it was sufficient for our needs. The outdoor area is kept clean and tidy and pools always sparkling. Our short holiday at the Calamander was a holiday to remember in paradise!
