The hotel is historic with interesting decor. it is conveniently located in Chinatown, near bars, restaurants and the subway station. Unfortunately, there is construction of a large building going on nearby. The hotel room was also nicely decorated, although it was small. Not big enough for a couple with two big suitcases. The sliding bathroom doors didn't close complete; one can guess what the consequences are. The floor in the bathroom. and shower was not clean. Breakfast was not bad.

This hotel has immense colonial charm (some won’t like it for that reason, but I did). A few little tips - Wotif says it’s 13km from Changi airport - Major furphy - more like 45mins (checked the taxi receipt so I could check the sense I was in the taxis for a v long time). Very positive is the Polo Bar (the staff rustled me up a cheese plate after hours) and the pool (unlike the high rise hotels which can be very busy I virtually had the pool to myself on a Sunday). Elegant mini bar. Great front desk service. This hotel grew on me!

5 stars hotel with room WITHOUT window? As alternative there was a room about 15m long and 2m large... not enough room for your luggage (I had to squeeze it behind the room door, which could be half open only, luckily I am lean). On the 1st night I had to stay at the Sofitel hotel nearby (that I had to pay in addition!) to have a room with window before the corridor room was freed for the rest of the stay (4 nights). And the room door lock does not work well (I was surprised the previous days why so many rooms had their door not closed) until you realise that your room also had the door open with all my belongings just available like that. Then you start paying attention to things that could have been details, the TV that can be visioned only if you are on the left side of the bed (the screen hangs sideway from the bed as the room is too narrow), the curtain that falls piece by piece, the side table is broken, etc etc Is this hotel worth it? It is pretty decorated but definitely overrated, the personnel is nice (hence the 2nd star in the rating) but a room with a 30x30 window on the ceiling only cannot be considered a room with window (because of the photos, I did check to be sure but there was no indication of "no window" - usually a feature of lower end hotels). Luckily none of my belongings was stolen when the door was not closed. Aaah also, there is a huge construction work next very next to the hotel that will last a few years
