My husband and I stayed here several times this past year as a quick get away. The property is nice. The restaurants are all very good. I really like the Rumsey Tavern but they have other choices as well. Staff is very nice and accommodating. The rooms are very VERY basic. They are old and are in bad need of updating. There is nothing fancy about it. The high end rooms have a sofa and a small frig, that's it. It was pretty clean, not spotless, and the beds are comfy. No views from any rooms we stayed in. They have amenities we didn't use, like a gym, basketball court, maybe a pool? Didn't use them but probably nice. All in all, as long as you don't expect the Ritz when you walk in to your room, you should have an enjoyable stay. A bit pricey for the quality of the room in my opinion.
I had stayed at the Clarion several years ago and the hotel, services and accommodations were very nice. I returned last weekend to find the lobby and entryway very nice with a water fountain and beautiful paintings of the area. The food at the Rumsey tavern was good; service, except for Todd, was average. They clearly were not organized nor efficient. At 5:30 on a Friday, they had already run out of celery to go with the Buffalo Wings, which were good. We asked for crackers for our soup and the server never returned with them as she got distracted with other servers and tables. The buffet food for breakfast was lukewarm and the eggs were cold. Also, the interior of the dining room, tavern and conference rooms were shabby. Chairs had stuffing coming out of them, carpets were stained and wrinkled, wallpaper was starting to peel off in some areas. Cleaning of our conference room was not good. No one had vacuumed; there was a pink pill in the corner of the door leading out of the conference room that was there from Friday afternoon until I left Sunday afternoon. It was once such a nice hotel and the surrounding area is so beautiful. Shepardstown is one of my favorite places. However, the hotel/conference center is in need of a serious updating, renovating and cleaning.
Was there for a week on a business trip with a large group. The hotel specializes in this and did a very good job handling us all. The rooms were well equipped and clean. Despite the many people staying there, it was quiet enough for a good night's sleep. The bar/restaurant is handy but if you want to get into town, there is a shuttle.
The hotel offers a shuttle service to all the local restaurants and grocery stores in Shepherdstown. Sue, the shuttle driver, is a local celebrity. Originally from New York, she took a wrong turn and ended up in Shepherdstown. She knows the town well, and is very happy to point out the local sights along the way, offer restaurant recommendations, grocery store specials or even historical facts about the town. She's engaging, witty, funny, and a wonderful ambassador for both the hotel and the town. I would come back and stay again, just to hang with Sue. The hotel staff are very, very efficient and really handle large numbers of people showing up to check in quite efficiently. The hotel is similar to a Howard Johnsons or other low-end motel -- that clearly gets a lot of traffic from the various events that happen there. Rooms in the hotel come equipped with a drip coffee maker (best to bring your own coffee and filters if you like coffee) and a dorm sized fridge for those who self-cater. The rooms aren't particularly clean or cozy, though the beds are quite comfortable. The carpets are in dire need of a shampoo, the housekeeping was haphazard at best and the entire hotel would benefit from a facelift -- even minor ones. The curtains in my room were shredded due to sun-rot, the bedspread looked like it could use a good washing. All in all, while the facilities were less than stellar, the staff was fantastic.
We have eaten Brunch at the Hotel for many years. We always enjoyed going there for Brunch. However, over the years, we have noticed a decline in quality of food and service. Our latest experience was a extremely disappointing. We were seated at a table and invited to help ourselves to the Brunch. We started out with roasted vegetables, crab dip, hummus and other items. They were satisfactory. However, when we when for the beef lion roast, pork medallions, chicken key west and other main items, they were overcooked and tasteless. Likewise with other items on the brunch. The service was so bad, we had to literally remove our dirty plates and stack them on another table. This occurred over and over. We constantly had to ask for coffee and then refills. We asked for water and it arrived about 2/3 thru our meal. When they finally brought our water, one of the glasses was very dirty. There certainly was no supervision in the dining area. Others in the dining area noted the same feelings. Wake up management to your problem, before you start losing additional customers.
We visited Shepherdstown unplanned so no rooms in the historic town were available. We got the last two suite at the Clarion. The hotel is located a little out of town in the new housing development near the high school and with about 15-20 minutes walk to the historic center. It is a great place if you need to be a little out of the town and with plenty of parking spaces and the noise is a little too much if you have a room near the elevator (which is mine). Walking to town is not bad but watch out for traffic because half of the way to town has no side walk. The room is nice and clean with simple and minimal decoration. Front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Nice place to stay.
Stayed at the Clarion-not my first visit. Room was comfortable and appeared clean. Food and service at hotel restaurant in the past was awful so I didn't try to eat there. The only coffee in the morning was from a machine...who does that anymore. Overall experience average-the amenities are not what you would hope for.
Good hotel, very good service and standard clean rooms. Pleasant stay on budget. There is gym and sauna but there are also running trails in vicinity. It is situated 15 minutes walking distance from the Main Street.
My wife and I were in Shepherdstown a few weeks back and knew we were going to need accommodations for an upcoming event so we stopped in to the check in desk and made reservations for a room with a king bed in a quiet section of the hotel. The clerk at the desk made the reservations and faxed me a confirmation. Fast forward to the day we were to arrive. We walk in the the check in desk and my wife gives the clerk our reservation number. He starts to fumble around, then says that our reservations were cancelled and that they emailed this to me. Long story short, we didn't cancel our own reservation and never got an adequate explanation as to who did. We were put on the fourth floor in room 404. The room was very close to an ice machine so quiet was not an option. The room had two queen beds. The bathroom had hair laying on the floor, the grout in the shower needed scrubbing, and the carpet could use shampooing. I am only critical when I feel I need to be. Good points are that there are a couple good restaurants in the hotel and it's close to town. Management: Wake Up and start inspecting these rooms. Be critical. That's part of your job of serving the public. My wife and I are considering staying at the Clarion in Kearneysville next time.
I'm giving higher than a one rating since the staff were friendly and we were able to check in early. The rooms need a more thorough cleaning and need updated. For the price, I was expecting nicer quality. The drapes were torn, stains on chairs, stains on carpet, mold on air conditioner and ripped carpet by door were a few issues.
