We had just arrived after a long flight from the UK to find this most beautiful boutique hotel in the hills overlooking San Jose. The welcome from Luis Hernandez was warming and the rest of the staff especially in the dining room were very attentive. Food is high quality and the bedrooms comfortable and spacious. We stayed on the 4th floor and higher floors have best views. Hotel is about 20-30 mins from the city but the traffic can be pretty busy. Definitely recommend
This was a stopover hotel after a long flight. It was clean and comfortable, the food was good and I liked the arched reception area and views over San Jose. The pool was lovely. We didn’t use the spa. There was laid back live music in the evening that wasn’t intrusive.
The views, the warm and friendly staff, the wonderful little restaurant...we loved this place. It’s the sort of hotel you book because you can’t stand to stay in one more corporate, soul-less hotel. If you want something with a lovely old balcony off your room, where birds sing in the morning, where the views are so stunning weddings are popular in their little courtyard...this is your place. After you’re there a day or two, the staff will get to know you and remember your name and your favorite drink. Room 46 is a corner room where you can have a glass of wine on your balcony while the sun sets. I promise, you’ll wish you had another week. Memorable stay. Memorable staff. Thanks for taking such good care of my group!
We were moved to this hotel for our final night in Costa Rica when we complained about the Balmoral Hotel to the travel agent. It took an hour to get there from the airport, admittedly at rush hour and about 40 minutes to return the following day over so many speed bumps that we felt we might have bee able to walk more quickly. Not the fault of the hotel of course but mildly frustrating and stressful. Otherwise no complaints - the location was quiet, the room comfortable although no minibar or tea/coffee facility. A bit of a warren to find your way around - it looks like an old building restored but in fact, it is relatively new build. The access is difficult for anything larger than a smallish car - minibuses/large taxis struggle and it is not convenient for anyone who wants to spend time in the city or on a shopping spree.
I will say it’s a cute hotel only about 24 rooms , I did have the most bizarre issue I have ever had in a hotel . I checked in they handed me my key . When I went out I handed it in and when I got back they had lost it and couldn’t find a spare key , so if I wanted to go out again I couldn’t lock the door how is that possible in a hotel
The hotel isn't far from the airport, so was very handy when our flight arrived late. They kindly served dinner at the last moment for us. A great view of the city and our balcony was pretty. The staff are excellent and we enjoyed chatting to them over breakfast.
I have stayed at Alta three times, once for a whole month. It is small and special. When you are there, you feel safe and sequestered in your own little world. The restaurant is very nice overlooking the pool. All the rooms have a spacious balcony with table and chairs. I wished there was comfortable seating out there because it is really wonderful and tranquil overlooking the city. The location is great between Santa Ana and Escazu for other restaurants and shopping. All the people that work at Alta are kind and helpful. It is actually on a busy road, so don't expect to go walking outside the hotel. If you are brave enough to drive, rent a car and you can go wherever you'd like. The traffic in Costa Rica has gotten very bad, in my opinion. So many people ride motorcycles and they weave in and out, pass on the left and right and speed. I'm sad to say we saw a terrible accident where a motorcyclist was killed. Costa Rica has virtually no passing lanes and narrow roads. Just a word to the wise.
We stayed one night at start and end of our trip. The concierge was really helpful, especially when we had a problem with our airline. The room had a lovely view over the town and mountains in the distance The dining room was lovely had a guitar player in the evening, the food was delicious and well presented. My only slight criticism was at breakfast it was either fruit as part of a continental breakfast or cooked everywhere else in Costa Rica, we had fruit first then cooked.
A great experience! The hotel offers beautiful scenery, magnificent service and memorable accommodations. Located close by to San Jose, our stay was wonderful. We stayed at the master suite which is incredible. Thanks Alta!
We stayed here on our first night in Costa Rica. Our room was clean and comfortable. We couldn’t assess the view or other amenities as it was night time and we were tired. The staff from front of desk, bar and restaurant were helpful and friendly. If we were to return we would stay in this perfectly situated practical quiet hotel.
