We were there for 1 night and had bought a spa package of a massage and facial. The spa services were excellent, although our massage was only a back and neck massage instead of a full massage as was advertised. But the ladies at the spa, and the products were very good. The place is beautiful and well maintained. But the food was too expensive for appetizer sized entrees. When we ordered extra bread initially they said they didn't have any, and when they "found" some they charged us for 2 incredibly small bread balls. We asked for a late check out because we had treatments scheduled after the check out time, and they said no even when the hotel was almost empty. No toiletries in the rooms and the soap in the dispenser smelled like industrial soap. And you're supposed to use it as shampoo as well. Hotel personnel will bring you water but not much else, since supplies seem to be short in every department. If you're on the mood for very frugal accommodations, the spa treatments are good.
This hotel is such a beautiful place. It is a great wellness retreat area. The views are amazing and the swedish massage they provide is absolutely amazing! The food at the restaurant (dinner ) is a bit expensive but it is delicious ( not quite satisfying- it can still leave one feeling a little hungry). I love that they produce their own food and that they do not allow wifi all over the hotel area so that people can truly benefit and enjoy their stay by being in the moment. They do not provide free airport transportation though as advertise; but they will have someone transport you if needed for $22.
Lets start with the good: The hotel is in a nice secluded location, lots of green areas, nice views, very tranquil and quiet. Good place to relax, nicely decorated and friendly staff. The bad: its in the small details and the way they try to save costs: 1. no sings on the way, we made it thanks to waze, but we are locals... if you are a foreigner might be a bit difficult. 2. Rooms: very big and bright and nice, but courtains are see through so, if you are sensitive to brightness, you are awake at 5:30am as soon as the sun comes up. They should have black out! Also, there is a window that see to the corridor with just white cloth, so at night people walking by might be able to see you if the lights are on. We complaint so they bought us a wooden thing to cover it. good solution but not a practical one. 3. Bathrooms are big and bright, but our rain showe was not working, had to call on twi separate ocations for it to be repaired and it broke again. My guess is, if you use our room in the future (Psyche) it will still not work. We got the impression that spending on maintenance is not a priority. 3. Menu: too small if you plan a long visit. Its good food, must of it very tasty, but after out 3rd day we couldnt eat it anymore! 4. Restaurant: its cosy and small, but most of the tables are croocked and have to be fixed. The nicest table its broken, and not fixed, but they still sit people there... even though every guest later askes to change tables. Services is very good but very slow. It can take up to an hour to get you food served... and its only 20 chairs! Waiters are super friendly and nice, but not properly trained. With only 9 tables, they are not properly set, so, you might not have glasses in one, or napkins in a other. Only one waiter for the whole place. We were very disapointed by tue chef as she decided to have music while she cooked, so it competes with the ambient music we have a the restuarant. Several times we asked the waiter, José Pablo to ask her to put it down, and she did not respond. By the fifth time I had to get up and ask her and she answered thar If i didnt like it I should close the door... I got upset and had to use the "i am a guest" card and finally got her to do it. Very inconsiderate and disrispectful of her. Another hickup is the fact that kitchen closes at 8:30pm, so you are sitting there, eating and they do not inform you they are "closing", so at 8:45 you ask for dessert and its not possible anymore. My husband asked for tea at 8:50pm and they said it was not possible.... Hot tea!!!! 5. Spa: Hamman is off and they turn it on only when you book it, so... we lost 25mins of our time while it "warmed up", because they do not warm it up before.... Jacuzzy was cold. Couples massage is outside next to the pool so there is no privacy! I asked for watsu and they said it had to be ordered 3 days in advace as the water had to be heated... I said that because I am pregnant I would prefer water not so warm so maybe they could wave the "3 day rule", but was informed that the treatment is only done with hot water. Also asked about the treatment called floating... but that pool was in "maintenance". Overall, i would not come back nor recommend the visit, unless owner intervines and changes manager, properly trains staff and invest a little in maintenance.
I just stayed 9 days at the gorgeous wellness resort. The staff we wonderful, the food was great, the grounds are very asthetically pleasing, services, massages, etc were perfect. The only thing I found very odd was the lack of people there. I was the only person at the entire resort the whole time I was there! I don't understand the lack of customers. I hightly recommend this spa and think it's a great value for the cost. But staying there alone was a little weird at first. I finally decided to just embrace it, and by the last day when a few couples came for the day I found I didn't want to share my spa with them! haha. I hope they do a better job of marketing themselves in the future and if you go, I recommend going with a friend, a group, or a spouse. Very mysterious...
We've stayed here twice and had breakfasts and dinners many times in there restaurant. This is a lovely, secluded estate, but close in to La Garita, Alajuela and San Jose and its airport. The dinners are wonderful spa food, some of the best we've enjoyed in CR. The hilltop location is beautiful...a combination of CR, Tuscany and New England. It's very quiet there during the week, so don't be surprised if you think it all belongs to you!
First of all, I understand this is a wellness resort so everything is meant to be healthy and I get it. However, there are some things that most would appreciate if changes could be made. First, the food while healthy is not very tasty except for the breakfast which is only fruit and bread. Secondly, it gets daylight at 5:30am here and there is no sleeping past sunrise since the curtains are thin, white and have wholes cut out. Many of us are there to rest and relax and would love to at least have the option to block out the sun. The spa treatments are reasonable but ours were not the full 90 minutes we paid for. The best part was the location and peacefulness. It truly is a beautiful place. The staff were extremely nice and always went above and beyond to help you. Our driver Juan Carlos was a huge help and extremely nice and reliable. The coffee tour and the waterfall garden were a great break from the resort and worth seeing. All in all a good experience and worth doing but I think 2-3 nights max is enough. That being said we likely wouldn't go back.
My wife and I stayed at Asclepios for four nights in February 2017. We lucked out with gorgeous, warm days and cool nights for the entire trip. Charmed by the area's natural beauty, and impressed by the amazing staff's efforts, we had a fantastic experience at this wonderful spa. After a short (10 min) drive from the airport, we had a smooth check in accompanied by fresh chilled juice. We were then escorted to our room. We quickly began drinking in the spender of the property, and it seems this process never really stops while you're at Asclepios. Situated amongst many hills covered with plantations and forested greenery, the retreat had a quiet, peaceful aura, punctuated by constant birdsong. The grounds were meticulously and frequently maintained by gardeners and it showed. With abundant flowers, fruit trees and vegetable gardens spread out around the estate, it was the perfect setting for epic sunsets, catching a glimpse of wild toucans, or just snoozing in the shade. All of the rooms looked out into the hills via private balcony or garden. Our room, though simple, was extremely comfortable and nicely furnished. Although it lacked an air conditioner, television, fridge, or wifi access, it made up for it with elegant architectural flourishes, great natural toiletries in the bathroom, and a soft, luxurious bed with plenty of extra pillows. Having zero electronic devices in our room helped illustrate that this was definitely a place to unplug, unwind and relax. Asclepios offered many short day trips and excursions within a few hours from the hotel, and it was just a short Uber drive to the town, but we spent most of our time lounging by the small lap pool, unwinding. Having heard that the food served at Asclepios was "health-conscious", we were skeptical about the menu. After our first bite of the fresh, locally sourced vegetables, however, we ate all our meals at the spa. We must have gone through every item on the very limited menu, and each dish was truly delicious. The Asclepios spa menu was expansive, particularly their multi-day programs that incorporated special diets, lifestyle counseling, and an assortment of treatments, including exotic options such as Watsu therapy and access to the exquisite on-site hammam (Moroccan steam room). All our therapists were well-trained practitioners and provided exceptional service in clean, comfortable treatment areas. The staff at the spa were the icing on the cake. Courteous, conscientious, and discreetly everywhere, it was so nice to be looked after by smiling, attentive hosts. Special shout-outs to Daniel for ensuring that we always had a fresh beverage when we needed one, Sonya for her massage therapy skills, Esther the Watsu practitioner, and the maids who kept our room spotless.
I decided that I wanted to go on a wellness retreat - something to feed and heal my mind and body. I started doing research on the world's best retreats and came across Asclepios. I ended up choosing it because of the range of treatments offered. I came here and did the one week Anti-Sress program and simply could not have had a better experience! Everything about the property is deigned around wellness - the relaxing grounds, the natural light, the extremely comfortable beds, the natural tea infusions and smoothies...even the organic wine. (I'm not a coffee drinker but, to make a note based on previous comments, they also serve coffee now.) All the decor is minimal (white and blue in Greek style) and everything is spotless. The most important thing for me for the retreat was the quality of the therapists. I can now say the therapists at Asclepios are outstanding! Every single therapist I had - from massage to reiki to watsu to shiatsu to reflexology - every person was extremely well trained in their field and had many years or decades of practice. My other treatments were fantastic as well - hammam spa, flotation, sauna, facial, body scrub. Plus the yoga and Aquafit/Pilates instructors were outstanding and the Scottish showers were great! The deep tissue massage and reiki were the highlights of the week for me. The staff are really amazing. My dedicated hosts, Pablo and Esteban, were absolutely wonderful and genuinely cared about my happiness. They would bring me things before I even realized I wanted them! Every person I interacted with at Asclepios was great - reception, management, cleaning crew, security guards. They have an excellent driver as well, Juan Carlos, who will do your transfers and take you on excursions. He is so nice and speaks perfect English (if you don't speak any Spanish). I went to La Paz waterfall gardens and it was a lovely afternoon out. They plan your time really well. The schedule is a great mix of activity and relaxation and there never too much time between activities. When you do have downtime, there's always lying by the pool, swimming, reading in the shade, napping, and whatever else you want to accomplish during your stay. The food was great - everything is fresh and much of it is grown on the property. They had the best salads I've ever tasted with mixed lettuces from their garden! In the morning you get a smoothie and in the afternoon, a tea. They even had the most delicious gluten-free bread for me, which I couldn't believe! Asclepios is not a hotel - it's a place to refuel your soul. That's what I did for one week and I did not want to leave! My body and mind have never felt better. I will definitely return and I recommend Asclepios to anyone who is serious about nourishing themselves with wellness. Muchas gracias Pablo, Esteba, Braulio, Juan Carlos, and everyone else at Asclepios for an amazing week. I will be back!
From the reviews here, it's clear that visitors have had mixed experiences at Asclepios — for us, this was a perfect overnight escape. Asclepios was quiet and relaxing. As others have said: no alcohol, no smoking, ambient new-age music piped throughout the property, limited wifi, and very very quiet. We enjoyed the low-key and minimal staff; we did not find the place understaffed, instead we felt like we had a personal butler poolside, in the restaurant, etc. The gym was clean and had excellent-quality equipment. Dinner was the healthiest meal we had in 3+ weeks in Costa Rica. We were able to check in early and then hang poolside after checkout. Know what to expect and you will probably enjoy Asclepois as the peaceful retreat it is.
I was here two years ago as a first night for my honeymon, and it was excellent, I think we were the only guests but we enjoyed overall, room was very confy, views are to die for and food/service at the restaurant was great as well. Perhaps a little bit expensive but I guess it is worthy for a special occasion.
