Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel

My family was looking for budget friendly hotels in San Francisco and we found this hotel. I was not expecting a pleasant stay since it was cheap compared to most other hotels, but I was definitely surprised. My brother expectantly was going to be rooming with me. When I booked the hotel I had gotten a queen room but when I asked for an upgrade upon check in the front desk associate quickly upgraded the room to two doubles without any pressure! The hotel is nice in the lobby and also in the room. If I was to say anything negative it would be the sinks are shallow and no A/C, but they had a ceiling fan in the room so that wasn't an issue. Another positive it that I asked for a mini fridge in my room and my parents room when checking in and they immediately sent them up before we even got to our rooms! Nothing gross or bad to comment about, this hotel surpassed my expectations!

Emelie was so kind and so helpful in assisting us with our plans and tours!!

Very comfortable clean hotel with easy access to restaurants and transport

Great character and staff - comfortable bed, good view and clientele.

We had a great time and the hotel staff added to that. Very friendly, loved the free wine

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Carlton. The shining star here is the staff, who were so gracious and accommodating, from check in to prompt valet service to great service in their in-house restaurant/bar Phlox Commons. Bonus: Check out their FREE wine tastings in the lobby each evening at 5:30. We only had a couple of things we might change: We visited at the height of summer, and there was no central air, which is certainly to be expected. Although the ceiling fan and open window provided enough cool air, we had to deal with a very loud downtown - sirens, loud music in passing cars, yelling. Made it a tad difficult to sleep. The bed and as firm and the sheets weren't as luxurious as we might have liked (tiny detail). The value for what we paid was fantastic, though, so we'd book again!

Hotel Carlton was nicely kept and easy to like. Lobby was nice for catching up with colleagues and restaurant on site did a nice breakfast. Overall I would go back.

The hotel was wonderful. Loved the decor, the helpful staff , the wine reception, the food and all.

- Decent hotel with an old style look and feel. If you like that kind of look, you would find it charming. - Not in any of the better parts of downtown - No air condition in any of the rooms - Sound isolation is poor. You can hear everything from the corridor - Parking is valet only at $40 per night. Street parking or parking structures are preferable. - Spring bed was not comfortable

I loved the hospitality with the complementary wine hour and awesome DJ at the Lobby Saturday night.

Hotel staff was great, room was nice , but Location wasn't ideal

Hotel Carlton was a nice hotel: clean, quirky, well-located and comfortable. As it is in the "Tender Nob" (Tenderloin/Nob Hill), there were some interesting things happening right outside the hotel: a girl rave dancing in her pajamas one afternoon and multiple fights in the middle of the night. No one bothered me and I never felt unsafe. Just be prepared to encounter all kinds of people when you stay here. My room was clean and comfortable. I slept well in the bed and enjoyed a nice, hot shower every morning. Hotel Happy Hour (free!) was amazing--a great perk. Overall, I had a nice stay at Hotel Carlton. I would consider staying here again, but might opt for a quieter neighborhood next time.

Every interaction I have had with the staff has been incredible (and my stay was for 8 nights). I have the most positive impression of the hotel and would not hesitate to stay again. The walls are thin and you can easily listen in on your neighbors, but the amenities of the hotel outweigh that aspect (it's an old building, what can you do). I love that every other floor has purified alkaline water machines and each room has glasses and pitchers so that you have an unlimited, endless supply of delicious drinking water. I love the wine receptions with live music/DJs. I love the location, very close to the best bars, bakeries, and restaurants.

I've stayed here back to back years. There's not much they can do about this but the walls of the old building are paper thin. The doors are slamming all night and you can hear every conversation in the room next to you. If you plan to be in bed before midnight I'd pick a different hotel.

Staff was friendly, helpful, responsive, Will come back

This hotel is centrally located--it's within easy walking distance to so many places. The staff is wonderful--we arrived just after the free wine hour ended but they still hooked us up. My only real complaint is that our room seemed to be located outside of the cleaning station and every morning starting at 7am we were awakened by very loud conversations.

My room was in the 9th floor. Spacious and had a good view of the city. Stayed there for 5 nights in mid April for a conference. Every thing was well organized. The towels and bed sheets were clean and overall the room looked nice and comfortable. If you're not sensitive to noise from other rooms, this hotel is a good option.

Great Boutique Hotel, friendly staff, love the wine reception. Close walk to Union Square.

very good service, bed is very comfortable, internet speed is extremely fast

The lobby is newly remodeled and very appealing, with middle eastern touches but not over the top. The room is not large but very nice. The bed was very comfortable and. The bathroom is workable. Our room was on Sutter St, so I was concerned with noise, but it was not a problem. The wine hour and musical entertainment are a lovely touch I would recommend they improve the wine a bit for those of us more familiar with wine. The staff is so personable and helpful. Location is good, as long as you don't mind catching a ride to other locales. Good bar next door, with bar/pub food and good cocktails and beer on draft. We will definitely stay here again.
