Lovely hotel in the heart of Salzburg’s old town - the perfect location. Lovely welcome from great team and comfortable albeit compact room. I am not convinced that we got the room that we paid for as it bore no similarity to the images on the website. We paid for a Medium room and our friends paid for the basic room but we all got the same category. I challenged this at reception and was told that the images on the website are wrong but I don’t think so. The room was very pleasant nevertheless but I’d recommend caution when selecting a higher room category and make sure you query this upon check in to be sure you get what you paid for. Dining in the hotel was great - we enjoyed a really good dinner. Breakfast was also good with a nice buffet of fruit, cold cuts, cereals, breads etc. followed by eggs and bacon cooked to order. Service was a bit slow during breakfast as there was generally only one person working the dining room but this wasn’t such a big deal. All in all a good choice and I’d stay again!
We were visiting Salzburg for 3 nights for the first time, primarily as a treat for my wife who wanted to see some of the Sound of Music sights so I wanted a nice hotel. I had seen some good reviews for this hotel and we loved it here. The location was perfect - in the old town we could walk everywhere easily. Coming out of the front of the hotel you are directly into the old town and close to Mozart's birthplace. It is perfect for getting out and exploring. We arrived around mid-day in midweek in late March and despite check-in being officially after 3pm our room was already available and we could check-in and go straight up which was great. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - and always smiling. On our first evening returning from the theatre I asked for a couple of extra pillows and one of the gentlemen on the front desk raced up the stairs to get them and was at our door with them before I had even walked in. That is not a service you get at a great big chain. We loved the quirky layout of the hotel and the unusual artwork on the walls - it just felt like it fitted this part of Salzburg so well. The rooms and the hotel were clean. One of the other reviews said the bedroom was very warm - which was our experience too on arrival. But i was able to turn down the temperature on the radiators accordingly and opened the window for part of the day and it was then fine. Breakfast was an extensive continental buffet but they also cooked some fresh toast and eggs and bacon too - which was lovely. We loved Salzburg and the hotel helped to make it a wonderful trip.
We booked this hotel after seeing reviews on various websites and its location on the historic Getreidegasse street right in the old town. After corresponding directly via email with the hotel we were offered a slightly better rate then the usual hotel booking websites, my emails were always answered promptly and it never seemed to be any bother despite the many questions that I asked. Upon arrival at the hotel we were disappointed to be informed that our requested suite was not available due to renovation work running behind schedule but we were offered the choice of a smaller junior suite or an upgrade to the Maisonette suite and were shown both options by Marina. We opted for the Maisonette suite and were not disappointed, located at the end of a corridor and up some old stone steps the suite is modern light and airy with lots of space and as an added bonus has its own small kitchen if you fancied cooking your own meals (not that we did as the restaurant choice in Salzburg is very good). Although the suite overlooks the main road no noise is heard when the windows are shut and was warm and cosy despite it being very cold outside up to minus 15 at times. All the hotel staff were very friendly and happy to suggest places to visit or eat and the hotel restaurant offers very good food (see separate review). Breakfast was OK although it would have been nice if they could offer the facility to toast some bread (we English like our toast) and the tea was not that nice (so take you own breakfast tea). The only slight negative was the renovation work that was being undertaken, despite being informed that the workman did not start until 9am this was not the case and workman started at 7.15am. This was a bit annoying on some days and we were offered two other rooms away from the noise but we were already settled into the suite and did not want to have to change rooms. We have already decided that we would love to return to Salzburg and if we do we would definitely stay at the Blaue Gans again Thank you for an enjoyable 5 days and for our blue duck.
quirky hotel, bathroom designer needs to go back to school. Having a shower flooded the bathroom as glass shield had a 1/4 inch gap between the two doors. Unfortunately has polyester duvets which cook you as they do not breathe. Excellent position only 200m from Mozart's birth house
Arthotel Blaue Gans is located in the main street of old town, and it has easy access to all parts of town. Location is just great! The staff is super friendly and willing to assist at all times and there was a good variety in breakfast with lots of options. The only problem that we had is the heating in the room. Although we stayed in the hotel in early January, the temperature in the room easily approached 85-90 degrees. There was no thermostat to control the temperature and we basically had to sleep with the windows wide open at night or we would suffocate. We complained to the front desk and a lady came to "turn off" the heating system but she noticed that it was already off, so nobody knew the reason why the room was so hot all the time. In addition to the heat, there were also bugs in the room, the ones that bite.... I guess the bugs thought it was summer time ....
We arrived on 23rd January to one of the warmest welcomes we have ever had in a hotel. The reception staff could not have been more helpful and it set the tone for a very happy few days in Salzburg. The hotel itself is stylish and spotlessly clean. Our room (215) was generously sized, with a comfortable bed (two singles pushed together rather than a double). We asked for extra pillows and these were provided. The bathroom was lovely, though if you are tall you might want to ask for a room with a walk-in shower. Standing in the bath to use the shower meant that my head was touching the ceiling (I’m 6’2”). Breakfast is an extensive buffet: we particularly liked the delicious freshly baked bread. We didn’t eat in the hotel, but did have drinks in the bar/bistro. We also appreciated the hotel’s location in the Old Town (Altstadt) which made it easy to reach most of the sights on foot. Highly recommended!
Location is perfect. To be able to walk straight out the front door into the lane ways and passages of the Old Town is great. And taxi and tour pickups at the rear entrance is so convenient. But the staff are what sets this place apart. So friendly, happy and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. To be always greeted by name is so welcoming. And breakfast was great, but dinner was amazing. I thoroughly recommend both the hotel and the restaurant. If I’m lucky enough to return to Salzburg, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else.
If you are going to Salzburg and want to be in a central location at a reasobale price, this may fit your bill. We went there with friends in November for the great Christmas markets. You can walk to them in just a few minutes from this hotel, which is right in the middle of the shopping and restaurant area. We stayed in a budget room, which was very small and had no view. Room was clean. Bathroom was very small with no privacy. Our friends upgraded to a larger room which they loved. We spend very little time in our room, so we didn't mind. I suggest getting the breakfast, as it is excellent with many choices of meats, fruits, juices, pastries. The restaurant is very busy and is one fo the best in Salzburg. They had a place you could do wine tasting next door to our hotel. It was busy and usually yspilled out into the street. Noise level no problem..streets cleared out around 10:00 PM. Staff at front desk were very friendly and helpful with local transportation and tours. Make sure you go to the castle. We walked to the top..quite a hike, but when we got to the top and looked over the back side, we sere surprised with a "Sound of Music" view of the Alps behind the castle..I'll never forget that view.
Arthotel Blaue Gans has a great location, Getreidegasse is right out the back door. The staff is very accommodating and knew English well. The rooms were clean and quite. We rarely post negative comments, but it is called for here. The carpet on our 4th floor landing was a soiled indoor-outdoor carpet that should have been replaced years ago. The furniture in the room is very basic, almost dorm-like, like the inexpensive stuff you would find in an Ikea catalog. At the included breakfast on our second of three days, which was otherwise quite good, we each ordered an ommlet. When, they arrived before we took a bite we noticed a very strong smell. On further inspection, we noticed the distinctive sulphur smell of rotten eggs. We tried to ignore it, thinking we were over reacting. But, it wasn't possible to overlook. There was something really wrong with the eggs. So, we put the plates on another table and finished breakfast with what was at the buffet, which - repeating - was quite good. The next day my tried again with one hard-boiled egg. The same smell. Ooof. We should have reported it right then, but we didn't want to make a scene. And, furthermore, it didn't seem like there was anything they could do about it. A few other people were eating the eggs. Oh, well.
This hotel is beautifully detailed and fitted to a high standard. We opted for the slightly larger room, which was a good size for my partner and I to freely move about in. Excellent shower, separate toilet (always a good thing) and excellent beds. Even though the bed was a king size, they were made up of two extra long single mattresses - with individual duvets - which we very much prefer to the traditional set-up. It makes for a very peaceful nights sleep :) I would return here just for the breakfast. Very good quality buffet breakfast with eggs to order - and with plenty of fresh fruit!! So often the fruit salad is so half-hearted in buffets, but this was very pleasing. Homemade spreads and jams were absolute heaven, teamed with the homemade bread. Included in the selection were the usual European spread of cheese, meats, vegetables and condiments - all excellent quality. The hotel is right in the heart of the old town. The lane way of shops was directly outside our room, so you could occasionally hear chatter late at night. But it didn't interrupt or spoil our stay at all. Service was excellent - efficient and friendly. We will be returning here on our next visit!
