We stopped in here for lunch and no one but the wait stafff was evident. Sign of something missing? No, it was wonderful. I ahd a fresh salad and their horseradish apple soup (sounds weird but was divine. My husband had brats and sauerkraut which were filling. I commended the waiter for such a taste soup and he offered to get me the recipe (in ENGLISH!). Kudos to good food and reasonable prices, all served quickly and pleasantly.
Popped in for a lunchtime snack and a beer. Good Bratwurst platter and some excellent red Franconian lager. The place is nice but smells a bit of fried food though, that would be my only slight complaint.
It's a while ago when we visited that place, but I have to admit, the service was one of the best I ever had (Carolina in particular). Food is typical for that region and pretty good, portion size is crazy (enough for 2 peps). Bathrooms are clean, but aged. Definitely a good place to go.
To start with the good - the location is excellent, right in the heart of historic Rothenburg. The staff are all friendly and helpful, breakfast is very good, and so is the restaurant. We had a couple of excellent meals there, and they serve a very good white sylvaner. The room - not so good. It was clean - as clean as you can get a room with wall-to-wall carpeting. (there must be some old wooden floors under there somewhere?) The wallpaper was scruffy and the furniture looked like flea market finds from the eighties. The lighting was poor, the fridge did not work, and the space you had to squeeze through to get into the shower cubicle was 170 x 50 cm. The wifi was at best extremely unreliable, and for most of the time did not work at all.
Can't really be too negative on this place. The service was very friendly (they were Mexicans!), the food OK and price reasonable. Food; we had: Sausage on lentils with spätzle - sausage and lentils nice, spätzle was a bit old and dry, seemed like they had been under a light for quite a while. Pigs cheeks on lentils - very tender meat and nice lentils again. Apple Strudel - not the best by far. Not a flaky and layered pastry, rather a thin/claggy single layer. Drizzled with chocolate sauce and chocolate sprinkles, which I could do without. The dining room is not really classic 'gemütlich' (cozy), which is kind of what you want from an old school German eatery in a medieval German town. Overall, cannot complain but not great either.
My husband and I were only in Rothenburg for the day but chose this adorable and quaint restaurant to eat lunch and celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. The picked the perfect time of day when it was quiet which added to the romance. Our waitress spoke very little English but we had no problems pointing to what we wanted as the menu was written in German & English. I ordered what they listed as Ravioli but it resembled manicotti. Nonetheless, it was Superb. The pasta was homemade and filled with fresh spinach, cheeses and herbs, and drizzled with an excellent balsamic vinegar. I was skeptical at first but I ate the entire dish, only offering one small bite to my husband. My husband was delighted to see the large portion of sausage, potatoe cakes & creamy kraut, and salad that he ordered. The salad was a tad peculiar but tasty.
I can't say anything about the hotel, but I can definitely recommend the restaurant there. A great spot for late nite sidewalk seating - in season, but plenty of room and charm on the inside. Prices are good and service was better.
Roter Hahn has an outstanding location in the heart of Rothenburg's walled village. The building is historic, but the rooms are modernized and very comfortable. Parking is in a lot nearby, and historic Rothenburg all around you. We have stayed here before, and were very pleased they could accommodate us on short notice. The restaurant serves excellent German meals throughout the day. The owner/manager, Dieter, speaks several languages, and took care of our every need. This hotel is an outstanding value.
We were there for the medieval fest and we're surprised to find room at a reasonable price. Rooms were not modern but large, quite and clean. Lovely deep tub. Hotel is right down town and an easy walk to everything. The only down side was the car park was several blocks from the hotel. We travel light but my sister-in-law had a large suitcase on wheels to pull to the car when we checked out
We spent one night here in Dec 2013 to see the Christmas Markets in Rothenbug. The price was reasonable. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. The propoerty has an awesome location, right in the middle of the city (but it's hard to get your car to the front door if you arrive in the middle of the day because there are alot of pedestrians on the street). The hotel needs alot of updating (especially the bathroom and the towels) but was comfortable and roomy for a one night stay. The halls smelled like a ktichen but it was ok in the rooms. We didn't eat breakfast because it was extra since we booked through on online booking site. I think if you book directly with the hotel, it is free.
