This hostel was really cute and quaint. It was clean and comfortable. That's about it positive. I have never been asked to wash my own dishes or take down my own linens or towels at a hostel. There was no parking, despite it being listed under "free parking" when I filtered properties on Orbitz. The continental breakfast is frozen waffles and mud coffee (if you're lucky that they've actually made any) - that's not a continental breakfast. You also have to sign an agreement AFTER you've already booked the room that you won't drink on the property. In Richmond! Beer city! So essentially if you think it's ridiculous, you are out of a room. The private room was an outrageous price for all the work I had to do myself, and especially the fact that there was no coffee or breakfast. I ended up having to spend extra money to get coffee. On top of it, they make you pay a daily usage fee. If I'm taking down my own linens, I should get a hefty discount - not be paying extra! This will be the only private room you'll ever have with streaming services, though, so take advantage of that.
This hostel is in a great area. Easy to get to a lot of interesting places. The beds were comfortable and had a light on top and even a place to charge electronics. The lockers for also nicely sized too. Very comfortable and accommodating.
Everyone was was super helpful. I didn’t like the fact I couldn’t bring a friend yo my room.
Hotel was clean, quiet, comfortable and close to VCU!
Friendly, helpful staff! I had a wonderful experience for a great price! I will definitely come back again if I return to the RIchmond area. Thank you!
We only stayed one night and it was in a room with a private bath, which was quite nice and was similar to rooms in Europe in the way it was laid out. The bed was very comfortable, everything was clean and the room had its own temperature control. There were plenty of linens, a hair dryer, an iron etc., all the amenities we ever need, and the room was quiet. Breakfast was included and there were plenty of choices of things to eat and drink. It was all self serve and you have to clean up after yourself, which one would expect in a hostel.
This was my first time staying at a hostel so I was looking forward to something different. First impression in hostel was great, very nice decoration, inviting atmosphere and clean. I stayed at sleeping room with private bathroom; no really complains there, but if you are one of those who need plenty space for your stuff, you'll find yourself in a tight space. My issue comes with price; I paid close to $100 for one night which is not bad for downtown Richmond. But for a hostel, where you can't bring food to your room, have to take out the linens and towels before you leave and have to share the kitchen area, I felt it was too much. They charge you $3 per person, per night if you don't have a membership with them. You also have to park on the street as the building don't have parking. I found those little things inconvenient as you can find closeby hotels (where you don't have to clean your room before leaving) for $20-30 more. I was active duty for several years and have experienced several accommodations to include a tour to Afghanistan; I'm used to anything, but to me, paying that amount of money and still having to do work was not a satisfying experience.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We are glad to hear you found the hostel clean and comfortable. There is free street parking available evenings and weekends, including the weekend you stayed with us. There are garages in the area for about $7/day, but as we are in the historic Arts District, few buildings are able to have their own designated lots. This particular hostel, like the majority of hostels found worldwide, does ask for guests to participate in cleanliness practices and tidying after oneself in common spaces. We are also a dry facility because we accommodate guests who are otherwise too young to book in regular hotels, as we want all people to have the opportunity to experience travel. The hostel is within walking distance to several breweries and bars, so we hope you were able to go out and experience the city. We also offer a variety of options at our free breakfast, including eggs you can make yourself, breads, spreads, cereal, waffles, juice, milk, and locally roasted coffee. We do also have signs up if guests need assistance brewing more coffee or need additional breakfast items. Reviews like this are always helpful to us. Hostels are very different from hotels, and we do think it's important to remind folks considering hostelling that it is intended as a communal, interactive space for travellers to experience a city and get to know one another. A hotel at a comparable price would be located miles outside of the city, and we find ourselves fortunate that we are able to accommodate travellers on a budget so close to Richmonds many attractions.
Thank you for your rating!

Hi there, Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review! Hostels do have very different rules from most hotels due to the communal nature of the guest-only areas. We hope you and your friend were still able to enjoy the common spaces together!

Thanks so much for your review. HI USA is a non profit organization, so the membership fees we charge at check in support our mission programming in the hostels and our communities. I'm sorry you found that your room was not worth the price, but we feel that we offer private rooms with much more modern features than most hostels. I am happy to read that you enjoyed the overall aesthetic of our space and I hope to see you again soon!
