We checked the website before we went and that was no help!! Sunday lunchtime no food no real ale just two unhappy punters!!There are new management and they have not got their act together. It has a small garden at the back mainly used by the smokers
we had booked the Whyte Harte several months ago, we are attending a family wedding next weekend, we received a call to say that all accommodation had been cancelled due to some structural damage, I ask the chap if he had tried to book the customers alternative accommodation, no he hadn't, did he have a list of alternative accommodation, no but could name some places, , he didn't seem to care about our situation of having no where to stay I could see him shrugging his shoulders at my plight, found them totally unhelpful, that is putting it mildly, I dont normally read revues about hotels, I like to make my own mind up, we all have different standards, but I think we have escaped a weekend from hell, luckily we didn't have to pay for accommodation until arrival, if these premises genuinely have structural problem, reading the reviews, perhaps they would be better demolishing the hotel and starting again, luckily we have found alternative accommodation ,
Sadly, this place is as run down as many of the other poor reviews state. Before being shown to our room, we were informed that the chef had quit only hours before our stay, so dinner would not be an option. this wasn't an issue for us as we had other plans, but we had paid for bed and breakfast and were unsure whether this would be honoured. This issue became moot after we were shown to our room. My other half said she was convinced that the hallway leading to our room stank of urine. The room we booked (the only one available) was very small, dirty, run down and in need of a serious update. It was a hot day and we needed to take a quick shower to cool down and freshen up before heading out again, but the shower was broken. Specifically, the thermostatic tap was missing and the temperature was set to scalding with no way of altering it. As no other rooms were available, we quick packed our belonging and left to find alternative accommodation. The staff were friendly enough and hugely apologetic, but I fear they are fighting a losing battle with that business and their management isn't going to last unless something drastic is done. A real shame.
On a previous stay, it was borderline whether the state of the rooms was acceptable. What made up for the previous poor condition was the pub/restaurant and the breakfast. We understood from the locals that the ownership/management has changed several times with each successive owner not generating enough profit to allow any refurbishment. With each owner, standards have deteriorated in every aspect. Rooms are dirty and in desperate need of refurbishment. Evening meal had to be sent back with the replacement nearly as bad, Breakfast was awful served by a poor soul who had no clue. Breakfast was stone cold and tasted dreadful. The cost of a refurbishment, i would estimate to be so, high that it is unlikely to ever happen. Locals were speculating that its future was questionable. I hope not but commercial reality will apply. Summary - awful
I really didn’t think that places such as this still existed. This was obviously once a smoking room as the nicotine stained furniture indicates, and either the smell has lingered, or the person making the bed had a fag on the go as the linen wreaked of smoke. It was the smallest double room I have stayed in for many years and it is just tired. Holes in walls and carpets, the bathroom is a total state with parts of the ceiling falling off. My biggest issue was however the fact that I could hear everyone else staying here, seriously I didn’t get a wink of sleep until next door turned off their TV at midnight. Shocking.
The bedroom and corridor were very tired and needing urgent redecoration and updating. Didn't smell fresh. Room was so small only just enough space for beds. No chair or anywhere to put anything. Windows filthy. At breakfast my husband wanted a top up of his coffee but no staff around. I went to kitchen and called but there was no one there, or in the bar, or at reception. Eventually I found the waitress sitting in the garden smoking. Not likely to stay again.
This pub/hotel needs updating, rooms are old and Small, shower needs replacing, needs decorating, WIFI nor that good it's like going back in time is it worth the money only if you can't find any more hotels, but the only good thing about this hotel is the breakfast very good, as for the Hotel it needs to be dragged out of the 70s.
I booked this Without checking previous reviews- big mistake. The room was cramped, dated, filthy windows, bathroom mouldy and grim. We ate in the pub and the food was poor. I had to pay for everything individually as no tab even though we were residents. Won’t be coming back
Lovely relaxing rooms, lovely hot shower just what I want in a country pub very friendly staff everyone makes you feel welcome lovely family pub fantastic breakfast and dinners would recommend any time will be coming back
A lovely historic building very friendly helpful staff, I stayed for the weekend enjoyed the live music on the Saturday night very welcoming environment at the bar, had a problem with the shower pressure in the room but the management helped fix the problem with apologies and got on to a plumber, I had a beautiful beef topside roast on the Sunday with live acoustic music playing in the early evening, I will definitely be back for the food and a nice weekend getaway
