Base Queenstown - Hostel2.0 out of 5.0

The location of this hostel is great - very central! Unfortunately I'd only describe this hostel as OK. It's as clean as you'd expect a hostel to be but there was no bin in the bathroom (guess they just expect you to carry sanitary wear around until you find one), 1 plug in a dorm of 8 so no one could charge their phones, the showers have no hot/cold switch you just have to scald yourself with no way of turning it down, the kitchen is awfully stocked (no tin opener, which when you're back packing is a bit of a go-to), no matches to light the gas stove until I went down to reception to ask for some, about 5 cereal bowls so you have to wait around for your breakfast etc. The free breakfast is toast and jam/marmalade, which was nice but there wasn't enough for everyone so get there at 8 when it's put out. I forgot a bag when I checked out and rang up for it to be put behind the desk for me a I was checking back in the next day. After being reassured on the phone they would, I got there and the bag had been lost. I know it's my fault for forgetting it, but it seems like it's wasn't a too difficult request to be accommodate. The staff don't really seem to care too much, just kept being told to come back and ask different staff members who "might have seen it". The staff on the travel desk were really helpful though, so can recommend booking activities through there. The bar downstairs has music playing so loud the base vibrates things, so if you want a good nights sleep forget it, but if you want to party this hostel would be fine. I know you can expect to have a lot of issues at hostels, but there are much better options around for a better price.
The recption was good they are really kind, nice and helpfull. The bedroom was good, clean, warm, comfortable, but the bunk is really noisy we can't breath and its grint, there are not enough power outlet to recharge our cell phone and cameras. In the kitchen I have to use fried pan to cook rice because there is no sauce pan to use, and it was difficult to control the stoven fire.
Stayed 2 nights in 8 beds dorm. Friendly staffs. First 12 hours wifi free at the reception area. breakfast included from 8 o'clock. Not tried breakfast as I departed early. Water not warm in shower. Water temperature not adjustable, either turn on or off the shower. Centrally located in town easy acess to shopping, dining places and bars.
This is a P-A-R-T-Y hostel. The bar underneath is pretty fun but it is loud up in the rooms until 1-2am! Be prepared for that. I was fine with earplugs the first night but the second I just decided joining in was my best bet! So many fun bars all around Queenstown to check out as well. Beds were comfy and the cleaners did a good job in the bathroom and cleaning the room. It’s a hostel... and cleanliness was at hostel level. Bring your own towel just in case b/c they run out of rentals. The staff were friendly and helpful when needed. It’s a big hostel vibe. They don’t get to know your name. The only thing I did not like was the 48hr cancellation notice. My plans changed and I had to leave 2 days early. I wish I could’ve gotten at least one night $ back.
One of the worst hostels I've ever stayed at. Do not waste your time or money when there are tons of other (way better) options for the same price. The staff were rude and unhelpful. When we first walked in the guy at the desk told our group of 5 to download an app on our phone in order to check-in. When we responded that all of us did not have the room on our phone for that, he rolled his eyes at us and grudgingly handed out pieces of paper for us to fill out. Having stayed in Queenstown previously at an amazing hostel (for a whopping $2 more a night than Base), I was shocked at the treatment by staff and the state of the facilities. The rooms were fine to sleep in for a night, but the comforters were obviously not clean and the bathrooms were mediocre at best. I'm pretty sure they placed subwoofers under the beds because they were shaking from the music at the downstairs club until at least 2am. Once the music ended, there were drunk people running up and down the hallways. One of them (who was not staying in our room) was running in and out of our room at 3am grabbing stuff from the locker under his friend's bed. There is no reason he should have had access to our room, especially at 3am when his friend was asleep. I understand it's a party hostel as I've stayed at other Base hostels before, but none of them even came close to how awful this one was. Save your money and have a good night's sleep elsewhere!
Although this place had bad reviews for hostels in Queenstown, we thought we would try it out for the party vibe. Showers were terrible, as stated in most reviews. Most of all I found the staff (specifically two of them) to be really rude and give a lot of unnecessary attitude towards us and other guests. Great location and bed was comfy, its a shame that the staff made such a bad impact.
Me and two of my friends stayed in the triple ensuite it was nice and affordable for us. I was really annoyed about not having a top sheet on my bed, the blanket was dirty and also house keeping going into our room and taking my bottle of vodka I hadn’t even touched well I was there. They should only be doing what they are meant to be doing which is empty the bins clean the shower and toilet and change the towels. House keeping could have told someone down stairs and I could have removed it from the property and put it in the car. I just find it rude that they go through your stuff because the vodka was in a reusable shopping bag zipped up and in the wardrobe..
Pretty much all you could expect from a backpackers really. First floor definitely picks up a lot of noise from the street/bar so a higher floor would be more ideal. Nice that the private rooms came with their own jug, basic toiletries ect
All we needed & expected from a backpackers with usual range of facilities and great staff but rather noisy both inside and out - you can hear people having conversations in the corridor while walking to their rooms at night or early in the morning and the bar next door is 'party city'...
1) Don t let you go in with alcohol in the hostel because they have loco cantina that is the bar nightclub next door so you need to consume there. 2) Disgusting everywhere, my shower had someone that pee there and no one could ever clean. 3) The cleaner come took my close bottle of Absolut vodka from my duty free bag and when I came to claim they said that they put everything they found of alcohol on a bin. Big lie goes all for the loco cantina bar. 4) The noise of the bar don t let you sleep. 5) Heavy old lockers under the bad, not safe 6) Don t sell or borrow tower, when I ask they said that sold out. just terrible plan if you want chill holidays without living that bad
