I've stayed at The Society Hotel multiple times in the bunk room and plan on returning. Being able to grab amazing food before and after a long day of work with knowing my possessions are always safe is key to why I always come back. Each time I have met amazing people at the social table in the bunk room and have been able to have a great home base when exploring Portland. Being able to see the cleaning staff multiple times through out the day is always great especially in a hostel space.
I missed my train to San Francisco and stayed one night at the Society hotel in the mixed bunk room. It was very clean and well set out. I loved the style and it was a great price too. It was like an upmarket hostel room in a cool hotel in downtown Portland. I would have happily stayed here for longer. A nice cafe at the front where I had a breakfast salad and easy to walk to nearby foodtrucks and voodoo donuts and the cool big bookshop. Recommend for solo travellers to be safe and a have nice clean bunk with good bathroom facilities.
Great downtown location easy walking distance into the Pearl district or downtown and the waterfront. Rooms small but comfortable and great value for a funky and stylish hotel. Great cafe downstairs doubles as reception.
Located in a lively area and serviced by a helpful and friendly team of staff. We had a lovely stay in this darling little hotel during the 2019 PDX marathon, it is a 10min walk to the start line. Perfect base for your all your Portlandia adventures. Rooftop views are magical. Loved how minimal and clean the dorm rooms were and sharing a communal bathroom presented no problems, in fact, I really appreciated the economy. Wished more hotels worked like this!
We loved our stay at the Society. The team could not have been more helpful, both before we arrived and while we were here. Special thanks to Lettie who made us feel so at home. The whole building is beautifully furnished and decorated and our room was comfortable. The area around the Society is lively with clubs and bars so it isn’t quiet but nor is it unpleasant or dangerous. Easy to walk to the waterfront or into the Pearl District.
It surprises me that most of the reviews about this hotel does not mention the very obvious issues it has. First of all, the building is located in a bad neighbourhood with lots of DRUG TRAFFIC (seen with my own eyes in full day just in front of the hotel) and with lots of non sheltered people. Therefore the building surroundings and the streets nearby don't feel safe. To be fair, we never had any problems with homeless people as they don't say anything to you, the worst thing is seeing them in such conditions. It is a shame that society doesn't take action to help them. I was more scared about the drug thing... Also this is a very NOISY area as it is full of clubs which have loud music until 2 am. Forget about sleeping until they stop their activity: the hotel does not have any system to isolate rooms from their noise and you can hear and feel the music as if you had the DJ in your room!!!!!... First night i was so tired and by the time the music stopped I was so pissed off that I couldn't manage to sleep. The second day I went to a late night session in a movie theatre to avoid getting to my room before 2 am... I would never ever stay in this hotel again. To anyone who is reading, here are the best areas to stay as they are well located and safe: Pearl District, Boise or Laurelhurst.
At the risk of finding "SoHot" SoldOut next time I'd be needing my AbsolutelyFavorite "Sailors Rest", I have to, with a clear conscience, give The Society Hotel TEN 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 out of a possible five!! For travelling through, urban adventuring, culinary explorations, any reason. Light rail to PDX, 2 blocks, BoltBus,Greydog,Amtrak; 4 blocks, dozens & dozens of Ristoranté, brewerys, retailers, a short walk or convenient public transportation away. Don't take my opinion to heart without taking a libation up to the rooftop deck first!
I just stayed at the society hostel and hotel. It is in the China district. As for the bunk bed accommodations I was on the top bunk of which you have to climb a set of step ladders to reach the bunk. I would store my stuff in the lockers provided. Comfortable bed with towels provided. The surrounding is across the street from night life bars. In addition the hotel offers a coffee bar. I had the breakfast sandwich on soirdough which i would recommend. Overall i would recommend this hostel if you want a boutique hostel 46 a night compared to the hi hostel except this one is in the years of downtown.
The Society Hotel is in a great location for a night on the town. It is within walking distance of Portland nightlife an LBGT friendly community and China town. When you're not going to be spending a lot of time in your room this is perfect. The rooms were very simple. We stayed in one of the suites so we had our own bathroom. Walls are a little thin and you can hear the nightlife from the street below. The fan and the earplugs they provide help drown that out. There was free wifi. We enjoyed the rooftop deck. Good views from the rooftop. They have a bar/coffee shop in the lobby. Nice sitting area with a fireplace. We found the Society Hotel to be very clean (even the shared bathrooms)!
The hotel should be actually called a hostel. Sparse small rooms, no way to change the room temperature yourself, paper thin walls, and communal bathrooms (2 bathrooms for an entire floor with probably 10+ rooms!?). The worst part of it though is the location. If you want a good nights sleep don’t book here. You will hear just about every bass-y club party on the weekends (feel like reliving high school club days which I don’t want to be reliving when I need to get up early in the AM). Finally it’s definitely in a central location but you can’t walk around without the feeling that some homeless person may go berserk and instead of bash a store window, may bash..you know what I mean. Otherwise it’s clean, good bed, trendy decor. Wish I could give a better rating but it was just an awful stay for my purposes. So good if you’re here to party and don’t mind tripping on people sleeping on the street. Bad for actually sleeping.
