Discover your California soul in Pismo Beach
Situated on California's Central Coast, about halfway between the hustle of Los Angeles and the sophistication of San Francisco, Pismo Beach is a charming small city. With only 9,000 residents, the seaside community of Pismo touts itself as the Clam Capital of the World.
Where to stay
Pismo Beach hotels, motels and resorts cater to every visitor, from itinerant surfers to starry-eyed honeymooners, to travelers looking for gracious five-star hospitality with all the perks.
Many hotels are found along the highway that meanders through the city, and most offer sea views as the stretch is adjacent to the waters. You can see the Pacific Ocean from private patios at the SeaCrest OceanFront hotel, which also offers you an outdoor heated pool.
Further along the road, away from the center, you will find The Cliffs Resort which has an elegant interior. Overlooking Shell Beach, you can eat at the on-site Marisol restaurant and unwind in the spa.
Sightseeing in Pismo Beach
If your idea of the perfect day consists of little more than working on your tan while perusing a bestselling novel on a white beach, Pismo Beach is your paradise. Of course, if you're up for a tad more activity, you'll find plenty to see and do in this charming San Luis Obispo County beach area.
The Pismo Pier
The 1,200-foot pier at the end of Pomeroy Street is by far the longest pier in all of San Luis Obispo County. Enjoy people-watching along the always-happening Pismo Boardwalk, and stroll to the end of the pier for a precious view of the surf and sunset.
Monarch Butterfly Grove
Located on CA Hwy 1 about a mile south of Pismo Beach, Monarch Butterfly Grove is open all year, but for the best butterfly shows, plan your visit from late October through February.
Take a tour by land or sky
Enjoy a guided tour of ancient Chumash Indian sites or see Pismo from a World War II biplane. There are also a number of local bus and limousine tour companies that show guests a wonderful time in the Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo area.
While not actually in Pismo, Hearst Castle is a favorite day-trip destination for travelers who are staying nearby. The one-hour drive north to San Simeon offers coastal views that can leave a visitor breathless.
The Classic at Pismo Beach Car Show
Anyone who's into classic roadsters, hot rods and muscle cars is sure to have the time of their life viewing the remarkable collection of cars that gather in Pismo in June. This world-class event attracts tens of thousands of visitors from every part of the globe.
Pismo Clam Festival
Held every October since 1946, the annual Pismo Clam festival features a surfing contest, a chowder cook-off, a beer and wine garden and, of course, a fabulous local parade.
Billabong Still Frothy Surf Festival
Visitors gather for foamy festivities at the Pismo Pier during the last week in September. First-place winners in each division take home fabulous prizes, including all-expense-paid trips to Hawaii during the Pipe Masters surf championship.
SAVOR the Central Coast
Held in late September, SAVOR is a foodie festival that features the absolute finest in California wine and world-class cuisine. Be sure to bring your appetite.
The nearest major airline hub is in Santa Barbara, which is about 90 minutes to the south. From San Diego, it's about a five-hour drive on US 101 North, or six hours northward on CA-166. From San Francisco, take US 101 South for 244 miles. Once you arrive in Pismo, get started exploring because there's never enough time to experience everything that the city has to offer.
