Just spent an incredible 6 nights at this beautiful resort. This was our first time at Karon Beach, after many years being based at Patong Beach and we will be back at this resort as it is definitely quieter than Patong and you do not get hassled on the Beach like I am used too in Patong. My boys aged 11 and 13 loved the waterslide and the high jump into the water which I tried too and was so much fun. I loved the beach where the water is just see through and so warm. My boys did some Muay Thai lessons as they do Muay Thai as a sport in Australia with my husband. Husband loved the instructor and said he learnt heaps in his lesson. I love the gym and the fitness centre is definitely first class there with lots of room, great view and huge range of equipment. It was also great to see an old friend Cartoon heads up gym and activities and who I met a few years ago when he headed up gym at Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas in Krabi. I also love to shop unlike my boys so took the 15 min trip to Patong via the Hotel service 100 baht and went shopping at Jungecylon which I know well. I actually needed some Bluetooth headphones and picked some up easily there. Walked along the beach with the family to main part of Karon to pick up some pharmaceuticals which was easy 10 min walk to main beach and shops. We ended up eating at the hotel every night as there is a huge range on offer from all the different restaurants. We had to choose between thai and sushi buffet on one night and that was difficult as we love both. Chose sushi option and we were in heaven it was lush and beautifully presented and more than enough to eat. We went to the Italian restaurant for a la carte on the rest of the nights. My younger son had the kids pizza ham and pineapple on 2 nights and was so big he could not finish it. He loved his penne with bolagnaise which he had twice too I had the sea bass twice as it was delicious and had pasta and seafood which was amazing . Ice cream for desert if you have room is sensational. Buffet breakfasts so plentiful too with everything you can imagine. We had 2 rooms with sea views and quite a few stairs to go up. My family is active so for us we loved the workout but Resort is huge and if you were not after walking up so many stairs you should clarify when booking and get room closer with fewer stairs. It is high season so yes sun beds do go quickly in premium spots. We have been coming to Thailand for the last 10 years but always in hot rainy season June July where easy to get sunbeds. However I prefer the weather better in the high season. We are club members and cannot fault the professional and very attentive staff there. They booked restaurants for us and shopping trips and gave us tips too on where to go. Great to see another friend Poo, who welcomed us on arrival - another lady who was at Centara Krabi. The one thing I will do next year is to visit the elephant sanctuary where you bathe and learn about rescued elephants. Please any tourists reading this do NOT go on an elephant ride. The elephants are mistreated and abused it is better to support them by going to the sanctuary in Phuket. We will be back next year at this beautiful resort.
My Husband, daughter and I just returned from a 2 weeks stay at Centara Grand Beach Resort, taking in Christmas and New Years and we thouroughly enjoyed our stay. Check in/out was smooth with no problems at all. The location is amazing, right on the beach at one end of Karon Beach. When we visited the beach was very clean, water clear and safe to swim. It's only 10 mins in a Tuk Tuk over the hill to Patong, and 10 min walk down the beach to Karon centre. You can walk down the beach or there is a path (close to main security gate) that takes you up onto the footpath safely, as I would not advise walking out of the resort along the road. We stayed in a Luxury Pool Suite (room 611), which was close to the facilities offered by the hotel and we had no problem with noise what so ever. The room had a large ensuite with free standing bath, shower cubicle with rainshower and seperate toilet. We had 2 double beds which they pushed together for us and made one enormous bed - bigger than a super king. We had no issue with the mattress being too hard and they offer a pillow menu which allows you to choose the right pillow for your personal taste. There was a large outdoor area with our own personal pool, which we used daily and our daughter was in heaven. Due to this we didn't spend much time at the main pool area. The water was cold but we found this very refreshing on a hot day. The airconditioning worked really well in our room and bathroom, infact even on low could get very cold after several hours. You can adjust the aircon, turn it off for awhile and there is a ceiling fan in the bedroom. We found the room cleaning fine, however on several occasions our room was not cleaned until 5.30pm which is somewhat annoying when you have been out all day and want to freshen up on your return for dinner especially with a little one. There was several days when no face washers were available and the stocking of toiletries was lacking. Having a pool with our suite we also had yellow pool towels that where not replenished without asking. I feel there is some room for improvement with the housekeeping, however we had an incident on our first day at the resort which is well worth mentioning. My husband forgot to lock the safe (passports, 4 electronic devices, credit cards, holiday cash, jewellery - the lot). On our return to our room the housekeeping supervisor came to the door and advised that we had not locked the safe and could we please check that there was nothing missing. I am pleased to say that nothing at all was missing, and that was down to the honestly of the cleaner - thank you Kung. No problems with Wifi. We had breakfast daily at The Cove where you are certainly spoilt for choice. Although a large selection of juices are on offer we found them to be not to our taste (too processed), and the hollandaise sauce had far to much vinegar - other than that we had no complaints. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. The staff are very friendly throughout the whole resort, however Kookkai, Penny and Thaan made us feel special, which is a great way to start your day. We had 2 buffet meals in The Cove during our stay, both we enjoyed. A special thank you to Laurent (Executive Area Chef) who ensured our daughter had her beloved calamari and fries on more than one occasion. We ate in the Mare restaurant several times, aswell as having Christmas lunch and the New Years Buffet. Julian runs the restaurant very well and we enjoyed all our meals. The wood fired pizza are very good, which you can order and take back to your room. The Christmas Buffet was most enjoyable with a wide range of fresh seafood including lobster, prawns, oysters etc, roast meats including turkey and ham, 3 types of steak, salads, roast veg, wide cheese selection and desserts galore. The New Years Eve Gala was very busy, there was more than enough selection of food, with an entertainment show. Having a little one we called it a night around 10pm so didn't see the fireworks. Our 6 year old enjoyed the Childrens Club, and there was various craft activities that change on a daily basis. We found the club to be well run, a safe environment for our daughter, and felt comfortable leaving her there. Well done Club Safari. Also a big shout out to the Carpe Diem team. We would also like to mention the Head of Security, Karn, who we spoke with on nearly a daily basis. Such a lovely welcoming man, who ensured we were having a wonderful time and all was well. He also advised us that on a Wednesday morning at 8am you can be involved in a ceremony on site next to The Cove with the Monks, which we attended and where able to give offering and receive a special blessing. Spa Cenvaree is rather special, and we indulged on several occasions. It is more expensive that what you pay for outside of the resort, but then you get what you pay for. There is a big difference in the level of service and your surroundings for a massage costing 250 THB down the road and Spa Cenvaree. We did both and I much preferred the experience at the hotel spa. We had no sickness, which I feel is worth mentioning. The hotel did have a notice up advising that there was gastro and they had hand sanitizer all over the resort. In my opinion the gastro is being caught from food outside of the resort from street food, pancakes, market food, handling money etc and not from the food in the hotel. After reading many reviews prior to booking this hotel I was a little concerned about choosing this hotel, however I was more than pleasantly surprised and would definitely return should we visit Phuket again in the future. We had an awesome holiday and have wonderful memories - thank you Centara Grand Beach Resort Karon!
De-luxe Ocean Facing Room no. 133 28/12/17-02/01/18 Holiday divided between Centara Karon (4*) 7 nights over Christmas & Centara Grand (4½* - 5*) 5 nights over New Year - so we have an overview of the ‘star’ rating for comparison. First impressions, wow, reception looked stunning. Staff welcoming & friendly everywhere at all times. Whole property appeared well maintained & all the buildings looked great. External corridors leading to the rooms in our building nicely decorated, clean & tidy. 4 storeys, with us on the 3rd. Lift if required. First impression of the room (133), fabulous view straight out beyond the small entry road to the resort onto the beach & sea – fantastic. Not too close to pools or restaurants so never affected by noise, yet more than close enough to reach all the facilities in minutes. Excellent WiFi signal, free, all over the property. A well designed resort. Sadly, the great first impression of the room & location ends there. There was a definite underlying smell of urine throughout this whole room & bathroom, including inside some of the closets! Faintly everywhere. I checked out the toilet, stronger there & remained so during our whole 5 days in spite of constant ‘flushing’ & keeping the seat closed. Later our first day I purchased a perfumed toilet ‘jelly’ thing to help combat the smell. Large freestanding bath, massive walk in glass shower with optional rainforest showerhead. Good water pressure. Pokey toilet no bigger than a small cupboard, glass wall/door along one side of the little cubby certainly didn’t make it feel more ‘open’ or bigger than it was. More than 20 seconds in there with the door closed & it turned into a SAUNA – roasting hot in spite of our air con being on. Far, far too hot. A very badly designed bathroom in general with too much space & attention on the shower stall, bath & sink area, & far too little on the severely limited toilet space. Very scruffy stool things under the sink area & an ancient set of scales (?). Bad limescale on the taps which were not firmly attached to the sink, though modern in looks, not well maintained. Massive mirror but in general the whole area there was very ‘tired’ looking, well past its best. The toiletries had not been properly replenished, no face towels & only 1 hand towel. There was a scummy tide mark around the inside of the sink & when we turned on the taps dirty brown water came coughing out, though it ran clear after a minute or two. There was absolutely NO doubt in my mind that the bathroom/toilet areas had not been cleaned, looked good enough at first glance for a new occupant but was definitely NOT! Out of order for a resort with this star rating. I spoke to reception later & requested the bathroom (particularly the toilet) be thoroughly cleaned, & advised them of the smell of urine throughout the room. They did address the cleaning as best they could, & it was fresher & properly stocked as it should have been (which emphasised my view that it had not been previously done before our occupancy), but it seemed impossible to fully eradicate the urine smell, which was faintly present our whole time there. Every now & again we’d catch a ‘whiff’ of it, which makes me think it wasn’t localised within our room. The bedroom was quite large (though much smaller than Karon), plenty of storage places, 3 full length mirrors in the ‘hallway’ area, but none in the bedroom. King size bed. Blinds on the windows. Semi open plan to the bathroom, sliding doors could close it off but unfortunately then it became too hot in there, air con lacked proper power & did not really seem to reach the bathroom properly & not at all if you closed the sliding doors into it! All fixtures tired, past their best & in need of a refurb. Décor fine. Lots of sockets & very good lighting. Not many hangers but we had some of our own. Fridge did not chill at all well, we had our own water, beer & soft drinks but they didn’t cool much beyond lukewarm. If staying more than 5 days I’d have asked for the fridge to be replaced. Breakfast buffet in The Cove restaurant was plentiful, lots of seating in or outside. Something for everyone though some areas involved a little bit of a ‘wait’ for preparation. All-in-all very good though. Only ate in the other restaurants once, Mare Italian Restaurant, pasta. My advice on that might be “when in Thailand, eat Thai food”. There are levels of ‘al dente’ but this hovered on a bit too undercooked. Edible though. Pools open at 9:00: Adults only is small, so you’ll have to be quick to get a sunbed there. Lazy river is pretty good, as are the water slides & rock jumping – though they have a height restriction we had not known about. Luckily it was staffed but not too rigidly enforced & if a ‘smaller’ child was with an adult & then appeared confident & capable they were allowed on. Main pool had loads of sunbeds, some man-made sandy areas & some facing the ocean. No restriction on towels, no deposit or ‘card’ in operation. As many as you like whenever you like. Bed bagging rife of course, inconsiderately for hours & hours, on top of which, with no deposit or card operation, people habitually just pushed off when they’d had enough leaving their towels on the sunbeds making them look occupied when, in fact, they had left. Selfish. After a couple of days Centara really came into their own with this. Any sunbed with only towels on it had them removed, then it got even better………….any sunbed with belongings as well, whose owners had not reappeared within an hour of being noticed had the whole lot removed. Hilarious to watch, very entertaining, furious absentees returning to find they’d been evicted & others settled on ‘their’ sunbeds. A touch unfair to be evicted so fast with a walk on the beach or utilising the numerous water facilities often taking more than an hour I suppose. Personally I’d use flip flops or sandals as my ‘occupancy’ guideline, if enough pairs of those remain with the sunbeds then you’re partaking in water/beach activity, if none, then you’ve gone somewhere else & fair game for ‘eviction’. If you walk along the BEACH to Phuket for shops, restaurants, bars etc it is much quicker than along the road, really, much quicker! Just go to your left once on the sand, can’t get lost & simple to navigate where to come off the beach. If you go to your right & few minutes to the end there is a scruffy, dog eared looking beach restaurant – don’t be put off. Food here was great, cheap & well worth a visit (& no upset tummies afterwards either). You won’t need the following paragraphs unless you are checking out booking for New Year 2018: The New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner/Show was part of the holiday package. Unfortunately there was no information regarding this in the room, therefore on arrival we had no idea we were supposed to book a table, choose its location & collect tickets. Discovered all this rather late in the day after mentioning it purely by chance to a staff member, only to discover decent seating all gone, no view of the stage & we’d have to watch it on a ‘big screen’ instead. No effective overhead covering to speak of (it was designed to keep the sun off your head, not a downpour of rain), so of course when it rained, which it did, we got drenched, along with our table & all our food. The ‘big screen’ went off almost immediately because of the rain, so that was that as far as seeing the show we’d paid for. Food on that evening was a buffet, a complete bunfight, chaos. Hundreds of people all trying to get their food at the same time simply doesn’t work. Staff could not carve the joints fast enough or replenish quick enough, though they did their best. Only 10 people to our table (our family of 6 & another of 4), yet the drinks order took forever & was completely muddled. We were able to move to a tiny table with a little shelter because it was so close to a blaring speaker that the previous 2 occupants had left! By 11:30 we also left, enough was enough so decided to see in the New Year on our balcony. From there we watched a brilliant firework show which was nothing whatsoever to do with the Centara Grand (Patong beach I think?), Centara’s was ground level on the beach & frankly, looked rubbish! TBH I’ve nothing good to say about New Year in Centara Grand, not the seating, the buffet or frankly, the show.
Had an amazing time at the Centra Grand Phuket. We stayed in a Pool suite as 2 adults and 2 children room is large enough for 4 people and the outside living area is stunning. The pool however in the room was freezing and we hardly ever used it. We had Club privileges and the Club in this hotel is the best one we have used, so many nice things to eat and drink and children are also welcome and treated so well. The pool area is also stunning with the Lazy river and the pool jump and slides, the staff on hand hear were amazing with the kids. Especially Yu who remembered the kids names and played with them all the time. The food was lovely although we tended to have breakfast in the Club rather than the main restaurant which was always very busy. The grounds of this hotel are stunning and its set in a great location within easy walking to Karon for restaurants and bars if you want to leave the hotel. We are centara card holders and would defiantly recommend this hotel to friends and hopefully will return some day but would be a spa room rather than pool suite as we were at the main pool more.
My husband and I stayed here over Christmas week and loved it. We upgraded to a Deluxe Spa Ocean View (which meant we had a jacuzzi on the balcony). Hotel grounds are beautiful landscaped with lush planting and well maintained paths. The beach is lovely although, strangely no beds are available, so you can walk along and lay on the beach, but if you want to sunbathe you have two pools to choose. The main pool with lazy river, pool bar, ice cream and bar. We however chose to spend all our time at the adult pool for some peace and quiet. Here we had great personal waiter service, special thanks to 'O' who kept us topped up with drinks all day. We watched the beautiful sun set every evening from here. We ate at The Cove for great breakfast every morning and went for the Thai buffet and Seafood Buffet. Every night they do something different. There is also 'Coast' restaurant for informal outside dining (great burgers and pasta) and an Italian restaurant (Which we didn't eat at). For a few nights we got a taxi (400bht) into Patong only 10 minutes away and one night a taxi (200bht) into Karon (3 mins) for a change of scene. it was easy enough to get a tuk tuk back! All in all a lovely experience, hotel staff are friendly. Mini bar in room was always fully stocked, bed big and comfortable. Amazing circular shower in huge bathroom. Great hotel!
Top class rooms with lovely bathrooms, comfy beds and views to die for. Swimming pool had amazing view and is a great place to chill. Breakfast were good with plenty of choice. 20 minute walk from Phuket.
Having stayed at the 4* Centara Karon for a week before visiting Centara Grand, we were slightly disappointed by this 5* Centara resort. Positives: Friendly service from waiters, bar staff, pool staff and reception. Everyone says hello, even cleaners and security guards. Breakfast was amazing. Huge choice. The resort is right next to the beach. Plenty of sunbeds (but a lot of reserving). Pool staff went around occasionally to take towels off sunbeds not being used. Negatives: The 4 adults in our group had gastroenteritis on our last day. Mother in Law was in bed all day. The only food/drink that connected us but not the kids were the pina colada cocktails from the day before so thought it might be the ice? Alternatively it could have been the New Years Eve buffet from the night before (but the kids also had the buffet and were okay). The staff were spraying everyone with disinfectant hand gel before breakfast and there was a sign about gastroenteritis going around the hotel, so a number of guests got it. Room was rather small for a 5* resort and not particularly clean. There was a strong smell of wee coming from the toilet so we had to ask reception to give the room a deep clean on our 2nd day. The balcony door did not close properly. A bit further from the centre of Karon. You need to walk about 10-15 min to get to the Karon roundabout. Not really a negative: the main pool with lazy river was nice, however, I actually preferred the lagoon pool and the other family pool at the Centara Karon. They were large and it was good to have a choice of 2 family pools rather than just the one. Other things to mention: safe in room. No extra charge to use it. Baht Bonanza is not available over the Christmas/New Year week. Kids club is good. You can choose to have kids leave on their own if you feel they are capable. Selection of restaurants on site. Useful if you do not want to walk into Karon. Taxis available just outside the hotel. Collect pool towels from pool and dispose into towel drop after use. No towel cards required. Note if visiting over New Year: Our New Years Eve buffet was a compulsory charge that was put onto our package holiday with the Flight Centre. We had no choice in paying for this if we were to book over New Year. Overall, if I were to stay in Karon again I wouldn't choose this hotel. I don't think it's worth paying extra for the 5* brochure rating.
We had a great time at Centara and they have a good facilities especially the Spa were we booked over 15 treatments between us five. Just few improvements required. 1. Fix broken tiles in the big swimming pool. 2. Label food with what it contains, for example clear signs for vegetarians, we had to constantly ask if it contained eggs. 3. On our last day we did not get any hot water in the morning around 5.15am, basically the tap just did not work in both of our rooms. We called reception and they sent an plumber but he could not fix it so we had to shower in cold water.
We are a family of 4 and stayed at this hotel for 10 nights. The resort has a lot to offer in the way of food and amenities. Mare, an Italian restaurant serves great food. The pools are big and cater for all ages. The slippery dips, jumping cliffs and lazy river were a hit with our family, kept the kids occupied for hours. The kids club is well organized and the staff take good care of the children paying a lot of attention to them. The location is also perfect, far enough from Patong for peace and quiet but still only a 10 min drive if you want to check out Patong for shopping and night life. A special mention to the Carpe Diem team at the resort. We were lucky to meet Seba, Dave, Dea and Mon. They entertained us with all sorts of activities. Led by Seba the team is well organized and very friendly, always willing to assist wherever possible. Even getting in an elephant suit on a 30 degree day is not too much to ask of them. They were great with the kids and adults. Would highly recommend this resort especially for families.
The resort its self was great. Lovely pools, on a beautiful beach. We had the deluxe room with a pool. The pool in our room was nice but really cold so I never used it. Our room was very nice but starting to date a bit. The staff are very helpful and the restaurants were excellent. Its walking distance to Karon however its so hot we took a taxi most times and a 15 minute taxi to Patong. Also the bed was very hard but we got used to it very quickly.
