Although my original check-in time was listed as 3pm, I called the day before to ask whether I could check in earlier. I was told by a staff member that 2pm would be fine. When I arrived at 2pm, I was informed that my room had “just been cleaned” and simply needed to be checked, and that I should take a seat in the lobby and wait for a message. After 35 minutes with no update, I approached the desk again. The staff then called housekeeping and asked them to check the room because I was still waiting. During this time, several other guests were checked in ahead of me, and I wasn’t given any apology—only an offer of a complimentary wine and cheese at the club after 5pm, which I couldn’t accept as I already had dinner plans. In the end, I didn’t receive my room until after 3pm. I had left work early to arrive by 2pm so I could shower and prepare for a 3pm appointment, which I ultimately arrived late for.

The renovation is lovely but I found the room very uncomfortable. The shape of the table top and its pedestal meant that I couldn't sit far enough in to eat or work. More significantly, I found the bed extremely uncomfortable. The pillow top meant my back had no support and the pillows were terrible. They either flattened down almost completely or they were so high and firm I couldn't get my head sitting flat on them. I saw the pillow menu on the TV but when I talked to the concierge he had no knowledge of it. He asked me to describe the type of pillow I wanted – medium height, medium firmness – but didn't seem to understand. Housekeeping did give me another pillow but it was very similar to the ones I already had. (I talked to the Concierge one other time about something – he was unfriendly both times.) The highlight of my stay were the valets Omar and Ashok. Always attentive, friendly and helpful, including with specific information about Perth. They deserve a bonus.
