We’d give it a 5 for historical significance and another 5 for the outstanding staff. Our suite with king bed and fireplace was ok but the room layout wasn’t great (you literally bumped into the bed when you entered from the outside). It was spartan in terms of the decor, lacking any charm so we’d give that a 3. The room was clean and functional but we weren’t wowed by it considering the price. The continental breakfast that was included was also a 3 - it met the bare minimum for breakfast; nothing inspired or remarkable. We will note that, overall, the inn is incredibly well maintained for its age and packed full of interesting historical artifacts. Glad we got to experience this unique place once.

We ate at the Griswold's restaurant for lunch, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was tasty and the atmosphere was simultaneously authentic (it claims to be the oldest continuously running Inn in the country) and updated. Our waitress was the only person covering the taproom, so things were a bit slow, but it's not the waitress's fault.

We stayed here for one night as stop one on our New England Road Trip. The inn is lovely, and historic touches abound. The only drawback for us was that the bed was a full size and the mattress was a bit too firm for our liking, but since everything else was perfect and charming it wasn't a big deal. Our best meal of the trip was at the Inn's resturant. Essesx is a lovely little town, and I wish we had more time to explore.

My husband and I were in CT for our nephew's wedding. We decided to extend our stay in CT by going to Griswold inn for 2 nights. Inn is historic, quaint and lovely. We ate dinner in the main dining room on Sunday and after dinner, enjoyed some amazing music in the bar. Continental breakfast is included and was very enjoyable. FYI, no TVS in the room but for 2 nights stay, wasn't a big problem

We were so looking forward to our stay at the Griswold Inn and to be surrounded by so much history in a truly beautiful location. Our experience didn’t match our expectations. On arrival the girl at the desk gave us a very cold reception, pretty much just handing us our key without even a smile or even a hello. This was the same on more than one occasion. Our room was lovely, spacious and clean and the food was good. However the waiting staff had an equally disappointing attitude to those at the desk with no regard on how to make things easier for a customer. We even had people walk out whilst we were there as their service was so poor. Had it not been for this we would have had a lovely stay but this really put a dark cloud over our time there. The only thing that we can really commend were the breakfast staff who couldn’t have been nicer.

The inn is so picturesque and pretty outside. We loved the bar and restaurant with the Christmas tree and assorted antiquities. The service was excellent and friendly. We enjoyed a shrimp cocktail and wine.

The food wasn't what it used to be. Fish and chips were greasy and fish didn't seem fresh. We just wanted a snack or light dinner so it should have been good enough. Something was strange about the fish batter, it just wasn't right. Atmosphere was great, as always though.

Been here many times! Never disappoints us! Was here on the boat two nights and came for dinner both nights! Fabulous spirit, great cocktails and great food. The decor...well say no more! Had the swordfish tonight and it was to die for. We always have the Reuben and it is better than any Reuben u can get in New York! Totally awesome! Love it!

I agree with Susiemcbrady...Awful food!...here is what I wrote to a friend in the restaurant business...“there are just those times when what you were hoping to get falls so far below any modest desires of what you were told you would get - it feels more like an abyss of discouragement than mere dismay.” Aside from the fact that our waiter at dinner in the main dining area was obviously green to the world of dining service (although a very sweet disposition) - and clueless to the menu - we found ourselves being served after a lengthy wait our entree's before receiving our appetizer dinner salads we ordered...we had to request what happened to them - WOW! But the food was the greatest disappointment. I ordered the cavatelli with pesto sauce and added herb chicken. It was sooooo un-descriptively bland. Their was barely any basil or parmesan cheese flavor to the pesto part of the dish, the chicken was a bit dry and void of flavor...even with herbs added, and the cavatelli was unsatisfying to say the least. A Huge Disappointment! Lunch was not much better - but then I did not expect much there as it was basic pub food. It was my Birthday and I had no desire to exert any energy in complaining - especially in front of my boyfriend who was giving me this treat. I don't even recall what he ordered - but he has dietary requirements...and that seemed to throw them off significantly.

8/14/2019 It was a pleasant Wednesday afternoon and a group of my friends and I were working around Essex deciding where to eat. I’ve always wanted to try the “Gris” as locals call out but was sadly disappointed. To start off, my girlfriend got the Cobb Salad that was SO over dressed it was in edible for her. My husband and I both ordered burgers (med rare) and unfortunately they came out far past well done. Hockey pucks as some people put it. I’m so disappointed as the service staff were so nice and welcoming but I can say my friends and I will never be back. I’m not one to comment on my food or send it back because majority of the time, it will just come back even worse. I expected so much more from this place but I guess the prices match the food....TERRIBLE!!!!
