3rd trip, which means we love this place. Hard to give it a better compliment than repeat visits.
Staying at the iconic Moana Surfrider reminds you that you are steps away from the beach and everything you came to do while on Oahu. Early morning breakfasts are surprising in style and flavors even for someone who has lived in Hawaii and you just cannot beat eating with the ebb and flow of the ocean waves in the background. It's probably a good thing to keep your eyes on the waves rather than the prices for meals here but hey. You simply can't beat the experience. Overall, the Surfrider says aloha in a truly wonderful way.
Great atmosphere and service. Nice they upgraded us from street view to banyan courtyard.
We loved staying at Moana. Great, friendly staff at a beautiful location.
Gorgeous view, great beach right out the door, downtown out the other door.
Great for Japanese tourists. Japanese weddings taking place 5-6 times a day, blocking the main staircase and rudely telling PAYING guests to find another way to get to their rooms. Dining all outdoors, and very overpriced, geared to the JALPAK market. Nice building, though. Very historical.
Not very happy with extra charges, we were treated like lower class tourists. Denied our access to the beach club, they didn't even let us in to get water from there because our room wasn't part of the beach club but it was never advertised or offered at reservation. They charged us 55 dollars per day for the use of their own umbrellas even though they warned us and made us sign and pay the resort fee of 31 dollars per day! The umbrellas are an extra charge! If you are not in the premium plans the service is mediocre at best we were not treated equally! The beach is beautiful and we had a great weather. I would definitely visit Hawaii again, but different resort.
This is my second time at the Moana. It just feels like home there. It is a great mixture of old fashioned and modern. I will Always choose this hotel when I go to Waikiki.
We stayed in an ocean front suite, 11th floor, 1 bedroom, with a dining and living area and two balconies. Views were spectacular and you can hear the waves all night long.
The first room we stayed in had a musty odor. The room we stayed in was kinda small but was enough for us..a balcony would have been nice. This hotel seems to be cater to Japanese weddings. Every day there was a wedding. Pool was small and closes early at 6:00 pm. Would have been nice to be open for a bit longer. Fitness center was impressive but only 3 out of 5 treadmills were working. The next room they moved us to didn't have a strange musty odor but that smell was in the hallway. We didn't stay much in the resort since there is not much to do. We found ourselves going to other resorts that were much nicer. Book early and try to stay at the Sheraton. At least their pools were open until 8 pm. If the Sheraton was fully booked, we would have stayed there. Service at the only bar was very lacking. Bartenders were kinda nice, but the servers were not friendly at all. We complained about a chipped glass and it seems bothersome for the server to change. She made an excuse that it was plastic. Serving a broken glass was not professional at all, and doesn't reflect the quality that I expected from a Westin resort.
The pool closed at 9:55pm. We were kicked out at 8:30 by rude pool staff. Our room had a door to the neighboring room that let in every noise they made all night long.
Very nice stay. Glad I chose an ocean view room as the view was spectacular ! The hotel also has a great spa, where I had a great shiatsu massage from Patti which was amazing. The hotel had the perfect location, right on the beach and just bear the main stores and restaurants in Waikiki all in walking distance which was perfect. Really enjoyed my stay there, I would definitely go back and recommend it to friends and family.
The hotel was generally located - which was great but when we checked in they did not have our room - we had to stay in a room with double beds for the first night and we moved the second into the room I reserved-did not apologize to us or anything. The hidden fees to stay at the resort was astounding-we had at least 500.00 plus in extra fees when we checked in - we had already paid for the trip in advance. They charged for parking, they charged for wifi, gym fees-it was just crazy. We will not stay there again that's for sure!
Overall it was simply "OK". The check in process was extremely slow and they had very few people working the check-in counter. Room needs some updating. Bathroom door did not shut properly, some of the wallpaper in the room was coming off. Food was OK, but extremely overpriced. Not sure if this was specific to Moana Surfrider or if it's just the way it is at all hotels in Waikiki. Pool area was tremendously over-crowded. You pay a $30 resort fee, but there is very little of the resort that you can actually use. Unless you get out to the pool by 7am, you can pretty much forget about getting a chair. The pool is also very very small and mostly for kids. Not comfortable for adults. Overall it was again just "OK". It's hard to complain about being in Hawaii right? and it seems silly to do so, but for the money you end up spending you just expect better. If you are looking for a relaxing Hawaii experience, Waikiki is not the place. If you are looking for a high-energy, party-like atmosphere then you "may" like Waikiki, but just be ready to pay.
If you are looking for something that is not your typical cookie cutter hotel this place is it. The moana has beautiful character Thad has lasted for over 100 years
My experience was amazing I loved every bit of my stay. The room was always clean never had to bug the cleaning crew for anything !!! I would recommend the ocean view if you can afford it or else you will be looking right into another hotel's rooms . FYI the room has a fridge and if you want a microwave you have to pay $25.00 a night
Would go back again, as soon as I can! Great location. Good vibe at hotel and a beautiful each.
Ir's a wonderful building!!!! In the best location!
the Moana Surfrider is a beautiful and wonder place to stay. the staff is very courteous and friendly. Especially craig the bartender at The Beach Bar and the hostess (didn't catch her name) they both went out of their way to help us. the location is good. It is situated toward the south end of Waikiki beach and is just about a block to the beach park. It is also right in the middle of the shopping district. If you travel to Oahu there are a few places that are a must. the Polynesian Cultural Center is unbelievable, Hanauma Bay is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii. And of course, Pearl Harbor almost goes without saying. Now the negatives- We had a hard time with the in-room safe. It was placed on the floor where you have to crawl on the floor to access it. Most hotels put them on the shelf in a closet. Internet access was ok. The only down side was having to log in every time you left and came back. Also had to log in in the mornings. There was no internet in the laundry facility either(which is where it is needed the most). But it was free. The area the hotel is in was very, very busy. The traffic is horrible. I have never had to wait in line at a pedestrian crossing to walk across the street before. And this is supposed to be the less busy time of year. Overall the stay was awesome. we have always wanted to visit Oahu and we are glad we did. It is just too busy for us. Probably will not return.
Hotel is the oldest in Waikiki, over 113 years old. We stayed in the oldest section, which had high ceilings and large mouldings around the doors. Very comfortable. Bathroom up to date, but no tub, with a generous shower. Single pane windows, which rattled some with the trade winds we did hear sirens for passing emergency vehicles on Kalakaua Ave. Housekeeping a little lakidasical, they did not refresh complimentary tea bags and hot drink sleeves and cream daily, twice I had to call for replenishments, which were brought up promptly. We had a wonderful time at the beach bar, located under a huge banyan tree. Pool area was nice, with large beach/pool towels for the asking. Many weddings at hotel daily, all day. Added to the charm of it all. Live Hawaiian music nightly. Prime location in Waikiki. One concern, we had a rental car across the street, and street was closed on our day of departure for the Huli Aloha day parade. I was somewhat disappointed, that no one had informed us of this event, not during check in. We found out about the previous afternoon from a traffic sign barricade. However the bellman I asked took care of it at departure, with no problems, and met us across the street with our luggage and waited while I got the car from parking. All in all, a beautiful hotel, great location, and we would have no qualms about staying there again.
