We stayed at the Mercure for 2 nights over Christmas for what was sold as a festive package. The place had all the atmosphere of a morgue, and without wanting to offend anyone it was like spending Christmas at an retirement home. There was no entertainment, no festiveness and the whole experience was extremely disappointing. We had stayed at this hotel in the summer and had been impressed with how friendly the staff were, its what made us decide to come back at Christmas. The staff that were working (and they were clearly VERY under staffed) were fantastic and the only reason this review has the score it has this time. There was confusion on Christmas eve about what time we were having dinner, we were told three different times, and then had to get in a long queue for the buffet. Christmas morning breakfast was a disaster with not enough seating, buffet items running out and people complaining everywhere. Lunch was ok, and a lot of effort had gone into making the room look nice. But again, there were not enough staff working. We had to queue over 30 minutes for the carvery, and tables were never cleared. In conclusion, I wish we had stayed at home. Would never stay here at Christmas again. Having emailed the hotel manager a week ago, I am still waiting for a reply. I feel incredibly let down by the Mercure brand, as do several other people judging by other reviews on here.
I stay here quite alot and always have felt welcome with some really nice rooms and accessibilitys. I would stay here again also, beds are comfortable and clean nice bathroom. Privilege room comes with extra but to treat yourself and have more
We were on a 4 day coach trip to this hotel. We'd have been better staying at home. The hotel was too big and completely soulless. Our room 184 was a route march along two extremely long corridors. When we finally found the romm it was cold, very cold. The radiator was barely warm. Luckily they'd provided us with a tiny oil filled radiator which was useless. Despite repeated requests for more heating we finally got a convector heater the day before we left. Now the food. First night dinner was 7pm. We finally got our main course at 9.45 and it was cold and the chickey was dry. Our driver complained and we were given a couple of bottles of wine. New Years eve dinner was booked for 7.30. There was a private party in and they seemed to be getting priority service. It was a 5 course gala dinner but again it was cold and the main course arrived just before 10pm. It seems that the food was very much a hit or miss event being hot or cold. We've stayed in Mercure hotels before and they always been excellent. This hotel is far from that. Never again.
Booked this trip last minute, busy hotel as looking after a tour so not much for families wanting to celebrate New Year as in previous years. Late getting food served but friend staff in the bar and looked after well. Thanks for a present trip
I've just stayed here over new years with Edwards coaches .the coach aspect of the holiday 1st class .the hotel well there's a different matter .your room whilst being of a good size had no storage space besides hanging space. 1st night for dinner service was slow there were 4 coaches at the hotel .when the food arrived it was good .2nd night new years eve .We had been told by the lady who welcomed us that dinner would be at 1900 .no it seems to have been charged to suit a new group who were having a meal at the hotel this said group the seemed to get preferred service over the coach groups .it was a set menu a mystery in till it arrived. Again service was slow but the food was good .3rd night sat down at 1900 food was being served straight away. Maybe the chats all the drivers had with management worked. It's a nice hotel good leisure facilities .location not so good it's on its own .would I come here again or recommend it probably not.
I don't no what to say the hotel was cold our coach party had to keep there coats on to eat there food witch was cold. when the manager was told he did nothing about it I would NEVER GO AGAIN I went two days without food how can you eat raw food
Travelled from South Wales for four nights at this ghastly establishment. What a waste of money! Complete chaos Christmas lunchtime. The entire building needs complete refurbishment and a manager who has organisational skills. Appalling!
We have just spent the worst Christmas in this hotel ever, there was no atmosphere at all, the service was slow and the food was cold , the carvery we had on Christmas day was served the wrong way usually you get meat first then veg everybody was standing in front of the veg in a long line before meat and the veg was cold, the entertainment was ok on the two nights we had it, not Christmas night the hotel was cold the radiator did not work but they gave us a electric heater
Stayed at the hotel for Christmas night, for which the visit was a pleasure. Having checked in early the receptionist was kind enough to release the room to place the luggage in, before going on to family for Christmas lunch. The room was clean and warm as was the bathroom with good variety of cleansing products. The cooked breakfast the following morning was plentiful in the self serve buffet, with an area for cereals, juices and toasts. Perhaps as it as Christmas there may have been a reduced level of staff, and why not, as everyone one wants Christmas with family. The staff we met were most helpful and pleasant and dealt well with the guests. Recommended with gratitude.
Short staffed apparently so service very slow.. if any Ran out of bottled water apparently Not enough towels for the number of people booked Rooms not that clean and dirty stuff at breakfast Looks very run down in general Useless bath tub... (paid extra for a privileged room as well!) However, good location, good WiFi, very quiet and spacious
