West Side YMCA

2.0 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

The West Side Y is perhaps one step up from a hostel. I had a private room and it was very inexpensive through Orbitz, but for another $20/night, you can get something better in Manhattan, at least during tourist off-seasons.

Staff totally "out of it". Either untrained or not caring. Even a simple question such as "do you supply bath soap" was an insurmountable challenge that went unanswered. Room extremely small with very noisy AC which did not blow cold air, anyway. Day of check-in a major water leak that flooded 10th floor halls with 1" of water. Some rooms and storage areas were flooded. Front desk person responded - "I can't do anything about it." Food service attendant did not arrive until around 10 AM on Sunday, though the hours said 7-7. In all, a terrible experience, with the exception of the gym and wet areas, which were super. Location great, but will pay more in the future to avoid the major inconveniences and staff indifference or lack of training. Do congratulate the room cleaners who were polite and efficient.

They don't change the bed sheet or covers. Very uncomfortable beds. Need renovation.

Nice place to stay if you aren't staying in your room all day. Clean basic rooms with shared bay and a superb health club attached.

No wash clothes (had to cut a square out of my towel for a wash cloth), no paper towels (had to dry my hands with toilet paper), no sanitary disposals (someone left their used pad on the bathroom floor GROSS!!). The only reason I stay here is because of the location and price. Guess I'll just have to come prepared next time.

Every day I asked for extra blankets many times (too cold to sleep, only one thin blanket) , but I didn't get them at all. They said the staff would send it to my room. Really disappointed.

Wanted to go to nyc on the cheap. Liked the location , the staff were nice. The cold showers though, were not for me or the heavy steel doors opening and shutting in the middle of the night.

The WEST SIDE YMCA IS A GREAT CONCEPT IN A GREAT LOCATION. The REALITY OF THE WEST SIDE YMCA FALLS FAR SHORT OF POTENTIAL. The elevators are good. The external building is good. The room is a source of concern. It was unwelcoming. It has large chunks of peeling paint and the floors aren't clean. The color is jailhouse peach. the window a/c is dingy, the cords fall out of the electrical outlets. The bathrooms had a nice mirror and the Wausau Papers dispensers were attractive but the paper towels were out, plumbing leaked, bathrooms were unavailable, missing lighting. One guest received two towels but no washcloths were provided.

I went with my second grader to meet up with friends from Europe. We had a room with shared bathroom. Out of 10 bathrooms, there were often 3 or 4 not to be used, because the light bulbs were broken or someone left a mess in the toilet. Also little room to put your things while in the bathroom. However, kind and helpful staff and great location!

Couldn't sleep a single cycle the whole time there, between every door and sound in the long halls banging or echoing into the room, in which I lay on a curved mattress sinking into the hanging spring of the lower bunk bed. Hot water in the shared bathroom down the hall was hit or miss. Staff worked hard.

Good place to stay, near Central Park. I recommend it

Location is convenient. A good place to stay for a brief, inexpensive, trip to NYC.

The location is very good, which is close to the central park. It is a good hotel for travelers, since it's cheap price and good location.

Location was awesome! Rooms were very very small but what do you expect for $90 a night in NYC? Front desk staff was rude. Bring your own shampoo, etc. Showers were dirty, bring shower shoes. Rooms were adequately cleaned. Bunks were comfy enough to sleep on after a full day of walking around. We weren't there to spend time in the room so it served our purpose well. Just come prepared for no amenities and poor service.

A great location across from Lincoln Center on W 63rd ...if you don't mind sharing a bathroom, this place is an extreme NY value. It has great place for coffee, pastries and snacks on premises. Incredible gym on the 4th floor and an Olympic size swimming pool too. What you save on staying here, you can spent on Broadway shows and museums.

It was very simply hotel. Clean. Nothing special. I stayed just one night and felt safe, that was important to me :-)

My only two complaints were that the second day my room key stopped working, but the lady at the front desk fixed it very quickly and she was very helpful. The other was that the security guard was rude with me when I came in. I will say that I had some trouble leaving which was my fault. The gentleman at the desk was extremely helpful.

Being in the heart of Manhattan for this price? I am in! If the view from your hotel window is of no importance, if you are ok with shared amenities (shower room), if you are there to spend most of your time outside of the hotel and not in it - it is for you.

This was perfect for my needs - I was traveling alone and only needed a place to sleep. It's not exactly a place where I'd like to spend a lot of time, but who hangs out in their hotel room when they're in NY city, anyways?

It's a hostile or dorm, but the location is perfect, a block from Central Park and a couple of blocks from the nearest subway station. Exactly what I hoped it would be.
