Booked this hotel through Trivago and got a fair deal. Checkin was fine, room was spacious but basic. Bathroom was a little challenging as the toilet and sink were so close together. Overall a nice hotel but a hike from the hotel to the center of town. The hotel did offer a shuttle to town in the evening. The only thing we did not like about this hotel was the amenity charge, really!! If this charge is mandatory which it seemed to be why not add it to the basic hotel charge. WiFi was great the night we arrived but the next two days the WiFi was awful. Talked to reception about it to no avail. Don’t think we’ll be back.
We stayed here with my family (8 and 10) for two days as a add on to a work trip I had. It didn’t take us long to discover how magical this place is. It’s super close to the beach and the room we stayed in had a wonderful terrace with outdoor seating where we could enjoy our morning coffee. I highly recommend those rooms if you have children. The breakfast had Sofia champagne, a hearty waffle station and an omelette station. The pool is heated and the large chess set is the perfect ending to a long day!!
What an amazing step back in time. This property is a perfect get away to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. The breakfast was incredible and the kids loved the pool. The beach is a short walk which was perfect for sunsets and for the kids to play. With kids it’s a good idea to ask for a room on the first floor.
Just returned from a three day/two night stay at the lovely La Playa Carmel. The location is ideal: a short walk to the beach and a slightly longer one to downtown. The grounds are simply beautiful! There are lovely sitting areas, a small but comfortable pool, a giant chess board, and more. There are some very nice extras: ice tea, lemonade and ice water served in the library 2:00-5:00; wine tasting in the lobby 5:30-6:30; Ghirardelli chocolate chip cookies at the front desk 7:30-9:30; free wireless internet; and, best of all, a nightly shuttle service to local restaurants (great help in very, dark Carmel). Our room was very comfortable with an ocean view (we highly recommend the view rooms); the "recent" remodeling was done very nicely bringing the place up-to-date but still keeping the historic feel (but, remember, this is one of the oldest places to stay in Carmel - the bathroom was very small, but perfectly functional). Now, some specifics about our stay: upon our arrival, we were greeted by Nicholas. He was simply charming with the perfect personality for our initial contact with La Playa Carmel. If you are lucky, Nicholas will be on duty when you arrive. There was a little error with our room assignment but Nicholas smoothed things over and made everything perfect. Every day we saw him, he was checking to make sure that we were happy and everything was going well. Nicholas defined hospitality! We truly enjoyed our room: comfortable bed, plenty of lighting, great television, many extras (honor bar, iron and ironing board, column fan), quality products in the bathroom, and very clean and orderly. Be sure to visit Bar La Playa: excellent cocktails and delicious small plates (try the cheese and charcuterie plates). If you are lucky, Jevana will be working; she is the ultimate professional (charming, friendly, efficient, pro-active, and a wealth of Carmel knowledge). Breakfast in the library and on the veranda was excellent. There was a nice assortment on the buffet table and a chef's station with delicious waffles and excellent omelets. Hopefully, you will meet Vincente to make you a perfect omelet. Ana was another wonderful person that helped make the start of our day perfect. We will return (hoping to see Nicholas, Jevana, Vincente, and Ana again). We had an amazing time and highly recommend La Playa Carmel.
We returned to the La Playa after it being closed for several years. The plumbing, heating, etc have been brought up to contemporary standards, and the restaurant now only serves light meals rather than a full dinner menu.
Amazing hotel and location. Major flaw is thin walls you can hear everything and they are pet friendly and on the night we stayed there was a dog that was howling and whimpering, told the front desk the guy was super apologetic and said someone else complained as well and that they were trying to get ahold of their owner. Shortly after it stopped. Also got charged for drinks and snacks but we did not touch any of their snacks or drinks. But I called and reimbursed the charge. Other than that it was great and will be going back..with ear plugs.
I just came back from a two day stay at La Playa Carmel. We celebrated our 10th anniversary And we can’t wait to return in the near future. The staff was simply amazing. They go out of their way to make your stay great. We loved the hotel. The place feels really cozy, has beautiful gardens and the pool is a nice 81° and allows you to swim even in the winter. The champagne breakfast is really good, and nothing beats sitting outside and watching the sunrise at that location. The beach is a five minute walk, and downtown Carmel is also not much more than five minutes to walk. I could not recommend this hotel anymore. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience to Rachel and her team. We really appreciated it.
Many times my wife and I are asked where to stay when they visit Carmel and without question we will send them to a Playa. The rooms are nice and large to spend a few days or a week. The onsite restaurant is great. The staff is happy to help with any question. You can hear the waves hitting Carmel beach all night as its just a few blocks away. The worst part is when you have to leave!!!
This place is worth every penny. Lovely accommodations and the staff are wonderful. They have thought of everything. My wife and I simply loved the little cabin we stayed in. They have croquet, bocce ball, putting green, swimming, fish pond, and beautiful grounds to stroll through.
This is a delightful older hotel in Carmel. Located near the main downtown and the beach. We were given a poolside casita that was lovely and quiet in January. The amenities are great, beautiful grounds and a wonderful staff. Truly enjoyed staying and would stay longer next time.
