My wife and I have been visiting Carmel 1-2 times per year for over 30 years. We have stayed in more venues than I can count, almost always in Carmel, occasionally Carmel Highlands, Pacific Grove, and Monterey. We found the Vagabond 8-10 years ago and there is no longer a question of where to stay. Randall in reception, and on occasion Quinn, are as delightful and helpful as anyone can be. My wife has even called Randall just to say “Hi”. The rooms are comfortable, cozy, and charming with fireplaces, extremely comfortable beds, and great bathrooms with heated floors. Breakfast delivered to our room every morning is amazing. We now live in Portland, Oregon, and visit our friends in central California every year or so. When we do we schedule a Carmel getaway and another treasured visit to the Vagabond.

After our wedding in San Gregorio in early April we wanted to get away for several days instead of taking a big ocean-crossing honeymoon immediately. Very happy and very exhausted after a weekend plus of events, we wanted a place to truly relax (in driving distance) - and we could not have asked for a better place to do it. Upon arrival we were greeted by super friendly Thomas, who offered us a glass of wine, showed us to our room and arranged massages for us the next morning. Our room was gorgeous and the bed **very** comfortable. The breakfast (that is delivered to your room at your preference of time and which you essentially order the day prior) was delicious. And, if you're a coffee-lover/snob, they have an espresso/steamed milk machine that makes impressive drinks to your specifications. The grounds are gorgeous, and we spent much of our time lounging around the Inn, drinking coffee and enjoying the late afternoon wine and cheese hour. When we did venture out we were thrilled to be just blocks from the main street and a short walk from the beach. For restaurants and activities the helpful staff provided excellent recommendations. I really can't rave about this place enough. We were so well taken care of and it was a wonderful place for relaxation and rejuvenation. (It would also a great jumping off place if one has more energy for day trips/activities.) Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer!

We knew we had hit the jackpot when the check-in staff were so welcoming, helping with our bags and showing us around the accommodation so attentively. Our room was spectacular - spacious, well-appointed and beautifully decorated. We loved the way the decor was quirky instead of predictable. The courtyard that all rooms are set around was a lovely space to relax in...sitting around the firepit with a good book and enjoying the evening wine reception was a great way to end the day. Our only complaint was that the food at the reception was a little light-on, but that was only a small issue. It felt quite indulgent to have a breakfast tray brought to our room each morning. Breakfast in bed is a great way to start the day!

We stayed for two nights at this lovely bed and breakfast in a quiet part of Carmel. The location is quiet but only five minutes walk from all the restaurants, bars, wine tasting and galleries and only ten minutes or so from the dog friendly beach. Like the town and beach itself, the Inn caters for dogs and our pup enjoyed the stay and various doggie treats and accommodations. The other reviews here are spot on - breakfast, rooms and vibe at the Inn are great and we would definitely recommend Carmel and Vagabond’s House Inn as the perfect place to play and relax with four legged friends.

We didn't know exactly what part of town we should pick to stay in. This was a charming little inn. They bend over backwards to help with anything you need. Our room was cute, and had a fountain right outside the door. They give you a list of breakfast options, and deliver them to your door whenever you want breakfast. Wine and cheese in the evening, and a nice fire pit. It was up the hill from the beach, and in a quiet neighborhood. We would definitely stay there again.

A warm and welcoming place to call home during a visit to Carmel. Spacious rooms surrounding a lush courtyard with fountain and fire pit. Next to the in-room fireplace is perfect place to enjoy breakfast and coffee which is delivered to your room each morning! Fun happy hour with wine, cheese and good company. Easy walking access to all points Carmel. Vagabond House is a terrific place to relax and unwind! (RAVE: Best night's sleep we've ever experienced traveling. SUPER Comfort!

I spent a couple days at the inn with my partner, my brother and his partner for my birthday and and Vagabond was amazing! Set in a picturesque neighborhood, we were within walking distance of the beach, shops, galleries, grocery store, and the downtown area. The rooms are gorgeous! They’re spacious and clean and have really beautiful and unique details like big sliding doors on the bathrooms, huge bathtubs, stone showers, double sinks, a cozy fireplace and small fridge. The courtyard outside is a great place to relax, there is an espresso/latte machine to enjoy while you sit around the fireplace in the courtyard. They also bring a delicious breakfast to your room every morning, you just bring them your order card the night before and choose your time of delivery. The staff is awesome! Really helpful, really kind, we got a bunch of recommendations to see a lot of the natural beauty of the area. I would definitely recommend staying here during your visit!

We are still floating in happiness following our stay at the Vagabond House Inn. My husband and I have travelled to Carmel every year since our honeymoon. And we just spent our 25th anniversary at the Vagabond House Inn. There truly is no better Bed and Breakfast in Carmel- and we have tried many. To start with, the Inn keepers, Thomas and Randal, are incredible human beings. They make everyone feel like family. And the detail, thought, and loving care they put into making your stay special never ends. Our room was magical- every detail thought out to make it perfect- from the gorgeous and calming decor, the heated bathroom floors, the fireplace, the best bathtub of all bathtubs!, the chilled bottles of filtered water lovingly filled each day, the fresh fruit replenished, the crystal bottle filled with an evening nightcap, the amazingly comfortable bed, and fluffy soft towels- at every turn we were endlessly charmed and never wanted to leave our room. The breakfast, which is brought to your room, was amazing! The afternoon appetizers and wine - we enjoyed both by the cozy fireplace in the front room of the Inn; and outside sitting in the beautiful courtyard in Adirondack chairs around an outside fire-pit under charming piazza lights surrounded by beautiful foliage and a trickling waterfall! We felt like we were in another world! And the location is perfect- in the heart of Carmel Village- yet tucked away in a private and peaceful setting. We loved everything about our stay. Thank you Randal and Thomas! And to all the staff at Vagabond House. You all seriously know what your doing- and we are so grateful to be on the receiving end of such incredible hosts! As far as we are concerned, there’s no better place to stay in Carmel!

We liked that it was close to the office and could get coffee when we wanted and go to the wine reception easily. The staff were so very charming and pleasant, that was never an issue. Breakfasts delivered to our room was a big plus. A rally big positive for us was figuring out that, if we put the big decorative pillows in the 2 lounge chairs, we could actually eat sitting upright. Major breakthrough! The inn is rustic and one can't be too critical for the signs of time and age. Some of it adds to the ambiance. We handled it fine. Consider this in context: Carmel is right outside the door and it is about as weathered and has about as many "issues" as this inn has. Be flexible. The breakfasts were excellent. Do make sure you enter a number (one or two or ...) in each of the categories. If you put an x mark on the item line, then you will get one item and not enough for the both of you. We got smarter on our second day. The continual gurgle of the small fountain outside was peaceful and restful. As we were the only guest room in this tiny reception building, it was actually pleasant to be on our own and away from other units. Reading other reviews regarding 5A, I now understand this is their bargain-basement cheap-seats room (that we did book through a 3rd party site). Other than a small room with no fireplace, the bed was comfy, the bath served its purpose, and we enjoyed or stay. Parking is in the lot across the street. The hill from the lot up to the street is quite steep. It's a quirky, pleasant, folksy, totally Carmel-ish little Inn. We adapted well, took advantage of our proximity to all there is to see and do in Carmel, and ended our 2-night stay with a good opinion of our lodgings. Knowing what we do now, I would call ahead and ask about other rooms, the costs, and get a complete picture of the positives and negatives of each unit. Still, at the end of the proverbial day, all is well that ends well. And so it did ... end well, that is.

We arrived about 7.30 pm after a long rainy drive from SFO. There was nobody in reception and we had to wait about 15 minutes for someone to arrive. They showed us to the worst room in the guest house and then tried to charge us for an upgrade to a better room. There was only one other room occupied! The reception was supposed to be manned from 7.45 but on the last day there was nobody there until after 9.15. No breakfast, no coffee and no checkout available. Furthermore no apology for being late. We decided to leave and call back later. Overall not a bad place to stay but we found it very amateurish and self serving. Only go if you don't mind looking after yourselves. More like an Airbnb than a hotel. Breakfasts are just cereal with a boiled egg - not really a full breakfast.
