We always enjoy meeting friends & family here for special celebrations for the Sunday Brunch. It is always exceptional. Food is superb with an extensive selection. Service is excellent and the atmosphere is wonderful. It never disappoints.
The Bavarian Inn, just steps away from the Potomac River that separates the very charming college town of Shepherdstown, WVA with Maryland and nearby Antietam Battlefield National Park, is the community's best hotel. However, it was the only one I could find, given that I was attending an event at Shepherds University, right next door. It has an old German vibe, with a nicely appointed subterranean Ratskeller below the registration desk and upstairs bar and restaurant. The rooms are average (the gas fireplace was appreciated on this late fall evening), and you can see there is plenty of room for outdoor activities in this picturesque setting. But the room furniture was old, the WiFi weak and hard to connect, and the meals so-so. The price was a little higher than the real value. It is conveniently located to the town, the University, and just 8 minutes away from the Antietam battlefield, the site of the largest Civil War battle. I would stay here again, but I'd look for a slightly better deal. It's a 3-star hotel in need of some updating.
The stay at the Bavarian Inn was the ultimate. We arrived on a Friday and left Sunday morning. The suite we had was wonderful and the meals at the Bavarian were the best! We had Chateaubriand Friday night and then ate the wedding we were invited to on Saturday. The breakfast was also great at the Bavarian. We will definitely go back there someday. Just wish it wasn't an 8 hour drive there.
I came here for my cousins wedding. The night before his wedding my cousin made a dinner reservation. The hostess Katherine was very flat, no smile, no personality. She was rude to my mother and I. I told the manager “she’s not friendly, the manager puts her on blast in front of everyone, not cool no wonder she’s not smiling at work. We sat down at our table and ordered food and drinks. They brought out everyone’s food except mine. My mom ordered the pork, it didn’t have much flavor and was very chewy almost rubbery, not good at all. I finally had to remind the waiter about my order, he tells me “I thought you got it already”. I finally got my order, the crab cakes were cold by the time I got them, I couldn’t help but think perhaps this happened because I complained about the customer service. When the bill came, it was incorrect, over charged for items we did not order. The hotel grounds are beautiful, however the food is very bland. The rooms are nice, it was clean however my cousins room had a broken heater. I would only come here for a drink and to take pictures on the grounds. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.
We chose the Bavarian Inn to hold our wedding and it was a perfect day! The entire staff, and especially, our primary point of contact, Brenda, were super helpful for the entire process. A great benefit to having the weeding here was being able to host all of the weekend's events in one location and not worry about shuttling guests between venues. Finally, the food was fantastic!
We recently spent two nights in a lower level river view room! The room was very nice with everything as expected. The Gas Fireplace was a nice added feature on the cool October nights. We had the opportunity to eat and drink in the Inn restaurant/brewery and all the food and Bavarian brothers brewery beers were amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed this unique little town and the Bavarian Inn, I will be back to stay and visit this town again.
We stayed at the Bavarian for an event this past weekend. The room was spacious and had everything we needed. The food was excellent...during our event and breakfast the next day. We cannot wait to return!
THE NOT SO GREAT - Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed with this hotel! Ordinarily I would've thought it was okay; however, because of the high price (almost $300/night after taxes and fees) I expected much more. The room (Potomac View Premier) was spacious and bathroom was very nice (separate heat control, huge, very nice shower), but the furniture and decor was extremely outdated and pretty worn. The fireplace was a great addition since it was cool outside and the deck had a nice view, but was very small. We also had bug issues in our room - 4 stink bugs, at least 2-4 flies, and a huge spider. I had a hard time sleeping the first night thinking about them. In addition, the TV was very small and the walls were thin so we could hear our neighbors throughout the night. THE GOOD - We had originally made dinner reservations in the main dining room, but they called the week before to tell us it was not available (there was a wedding reception) and moved us to the Rathskeller, which I didn't really mind since it was the same menu. Omg. The food was SO GOOD! We had the Schwarzwaelder Kaese Spaetzle to start, Schweinebraten and Sauerkraut Garnished for main course, and German chocolate cake and apple strudel for dessert. Everything was phenomenal and they were huge portions. My husband also had the Appalachia Ale from their brewery and it was way better than expected! Also great, both at the restaurant (Chelsea - top notch waitress) and the hotel, was the service. The employees are super friendly and helpful. I would definitely return to eat/drink here, but probably not to stay. Shepherdstown is great for an easy weekend getaway from DC though!
Just returned from an overnight visit to the Bavarian Inn. Decided to celebrate our anniversary with a highly recommended German meal. We had a nice visit, with highs and lows. My expectations for our accommodations were low and surprisingly our room was quite nice. Needs some updating but the room was clean, cozy and was across from the main house, with a nice view. My expectations for dining were high, and unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. Dinner in the main dining room was ok. The dining room could use some decor, as it was plain and ordinary. Our server was very good and pleasant. The weinerschnitzel was excellent, the sauerbraten ok. We did have a German sausage sampler as an appetizer, which was excellent! I had heard so many wonderful things about the restaurant, I was just a little saddened when it was just ok. After living in NoVa for 34 years, I can finally say I've been to the Bavarian Inn.
Sunday brunch, plenty of choices and all items were great. Friendly, attentive service. Main dining area has nice views and adjacent areas recently renovated. Ratskeller was very quaint (although we did not eat down there.) Easy walk to town of Shepardtown which is very eclectic and plenty of nice shops to explore. Very enjoyable day.
