We had the pleasure of staying at The Sounds for the final 4 days of our honeymoon trip. The luxury accommodation, spectacular views and excellent attention to detail made for a memorable stay. One of the best places we stayed throughout the whole south island.. The food was delicious, we especially recommend the 'Trust the Chef' option! Thank you Anne and Tony for the experience, we definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay around Picton or Havelock. Cheers, Keiran and Jess.

From the moment you leave the main road and head up into the native bush there is a feeling that you are going somewhere special, and you are! Not only is the setting spectacular, but the accommodation is of the highest quality with all your comforts catered for. If you are looking for a retreat where batteries get charged and time stands still, this is for you, Tony and Anne (and Bruce!) have created a magical hideaway that makes you leave wondering exactly when you can return!

We have travelled a fair amount and in all honesty, this has to be one of, if not, the best places we have stayed. There are no words for the ever-changing view down Queen Charlotte Sound from your room, from the dining cabana and from you own hot-tub. The accommodation is phenomenal with every little detail taken care of. The food at every meal is exceptional, including paired wines at each course for dinner. The location is close to a number of great outdoor activities. And possibly most important are the wonderful hosts, Anne and Tony, who looked after our needs with exemplified personal touches including allowing us to borrow the gorgeous Bruce, their Border Collie, for walks and cuddles, to ensure we didn't miss our own dog too much. We cannot recommend The Sounds Retreat and its' wonderful hosts enough. (and no, we did not know them prior to our amazing experience).

My wife and I stayed in at The Sounds Retreat for two nights under the individualized care of Tony & Anne Brooker who own it and provide some of the most outstanding guest service we have ever experienced. The Sounds is definitely off the beaten path, quiet and secluded. Our room was spacious with plenty of natural light and an open tiered porch, both of which had the best view in New Zealand. The Sounds is artfully tucked into a hill at the end of Queen Charlotte Sound, and there is a very lovely hot tub on the lower deck. The Sounds breakfast and dinner offerings were truly gourmet, created around our dietary preferences, caringly prepared by our hosts, and served with elegance and grace. There were wonderful wine pairings with our dinners as the Brookers have longstanding relationships with and knowledge of the local vineyards in the Marlborough area. There is great hiking nearby (access to the Queen Charlotte Track) and boating/fishing opportunities based in Picton (on the Lady Karen with wonderful captain Gordon) which we enjoyed through reserve booking for us by the Brookers. All in all it was a most fabulous stay, and we offer The Sounds our highest recommendation.

Every part of our visit was outstanding. The attention to detail, the property, the food, the view and our hosts. Very relaxing and luxurious. From the time we arrived we felt special. We had good conversations, exquisite food and wine and a picturesque, peaceful and safe environment. We loved the whole experience.

When we decided to book an intimate elopement style wedding with less than 3 weeks to spare, Anne and Tony couldn't have been more helpful. Anne helped to organise everything, from the celebrant to hair and makeup. Tony was even kind enough to collect me from the hairdressers in Picton, so that my husband to be didn't see me before the ceremony! On arriving at The Sounds Retreat, Anne showed me into our suite and opened a bottle of champagne. The suite is outstanding, with the best view anyone could wish for, together with every facility imaginable. The private decking leads you out to an outside shower and large private hot tub, and also to the lovely private cabana where breakfast and dinner are served. As the weather was so awful, the wedding ceremony was moved into the cabana instead of being up on the main deck. Anne had dressed it all beautifully, and it was perfect for our intimate ceremony. Tony very kindly played the role of photographer in chief, and took some lovely pictures. We stayed for two wonderful nights, and were made to feel so special. The food was wonderful, and the best local wine was handpicked to match each course ..... Diet starts today!!! Anne and Tony have created something very special in one of the most stunning places that we have ever had the pleasure of visiting ..... We will be back!

Our thorough research of where to stay in Queen Charlotte Sound led us to book at The Sounds Retreat and we were just as thoroughly happy with our stay here. It was four days and nights of serenity in luxurious surroundings including the gorgeous view and we have honestly never been so happy with a place for the way absolutely everything we needed (and didn’t know we needed) was supplied. So many little extra touches were appreciated; the heated bathroom floor (making Queenslanders in a NZ winter very comfortable), the cuddly classy bathrobes, the little snacks and bottles of wine that kept appearing, beautiful furniture, the sparkling clean spa bath that (bonus) didn’t make us stink of chlorine. The breakfasts served in the heated cabana were exceptional – including home made jams and yoghurt and we especially loved the delicious croissants and pasties imported from France. And the fluffy omelettes – five stars are deserved just for those – best ever we’ve tasted! All in all a wonderful experience – thanks very much Tony and Ann.

Wow wow wow!!!! We were so impressed by our hosts Tony and Anne. They made us feel very welcome and relaxed. Pics on the net don't do this little slice of heaven justice it is so so much better! The hot tub the view and overall atmosphere is so unique loved every second. Perfect place to celebrate 20 years of wedded bliss x 🥂💋❤️

When i sit back and recall our recent stay at the Sounds Resort there is one word that keeps springing in my mind MAGICAL, From the moment we drove up there long driveway and saw the magnificient view, we knew we were in for a real treat, Tony came directly out to meet us with a wonderful welcoming smile. Just what we needed after a long drive from Christchurch. From that moment on nothing was to much trouble, as Tony and Anne made sure every detail was perfect, Even allowing us to take their beautiful dog Bruce along the Queen Charlotte walking track - Bruce is a very special dog We booked in for Tony's and Anne"s magical cooking for dinner and what a treat that was from the table service setting to the magic of the cabana, all lit with wonderful candles, what a truly magical way to spend our 30th Wedding Anniversary. The food and wine pairing was perfectly selected for each dish. We have been to many places in the world but nothing has ever came this close to perfect as what we found here at the Sounds. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for giving us these special memories to cherish for a long time to come. Tony also was wonderful on our morning of departure alerting us that our plane was cancelled out of Blenheim early enough to allow us much needed time to ring the airlines to change our flights = without Tony's vigilance we would never have known our flight was cancelled.

This is a very special place if you're wanting to get away from the hustle, a Real Retreat. The drive from Nelson or Blenheim is spectacular, but nothing compared to the view up Queen Charlotte Sound from your suite, whatever the weather. Anne and Tony, and Bruce (their border collie) are wonderful hosts, looking after your every need. As the only guests you are very spoilt. They prepare the amazing meals and showcase mostly local food and wine with only a few imports - you must try the croissants! We relaxed totally. One day we walked for a few hours along the Queen Charlotte Sound with Bruce as our escort. Another day Anne organised a guide to take us winetasting around some of the many local vineyards. I highly recommend this and rate area as the best I've been to anywhere. In between times there was the spa, massages and just contemplating with more wine! The time was too short - needed more.
